Atlanta lost most of their bullpen, and 3/5ths of their rotation. Meanwhile, the Phils picked up one of the top 5 hitters in baseball and added Kevin Millwood. Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 25, 2003 The Braves are done as perennial contenders. Their strength was always pitching, and they've lost way too much of it this offseason. Their staff is a serious downgrade in quality from last year's version. The Phillies picked the right offseason to do their upgrading, and they jumped all over the Braves' rushed desire to move Kevin Millwood. The Yankees will still be a good team, but a team like Anaheim will still beat them. The fact is, they're just not the defensive team they were a few years ago. They bash their way to wins, as opposed to earning them with pitching and defense. Against teams who put the ball in play consistently, the Yankees' defesnive weakness will be exposed. I hope they can keep the team they have now (which is pretty much just minus Colon, who they really only had for half of last season) without any further salary dumps. People forget that they finished 2nd in the East last year, and if Vasquez can rebound from an off year last year, he can easily replace Colon's win total. They've given up all their best players in the last couple years. Bobby Higginson's the only one worth a shit and he signed a no trade deal before they completly shit on the team. I loved hearing the GM's take on the team. "We weren't winning with those guys, so losing them doesn't hurt us."...that makes sense if you're dumping your worst players, but not your best. They're also (for those who don't read the article) putting new bathrooms and concessions in the place, something SORELY needed. To create revenue, I don't know why they aren't putting ads on the wall itself. Purists will whine but the fact is the Monster's been green only since the 50s I believe. Before that, the wall was covered in ads. Personally, I think the Sox should do what Kraft did, threaten to move to Connecticut and watch the funding pour in (I know the state's in a huge deficit, but that hasn't stopped Massachusetts from spending.)
