1/24 Smackdown ratings

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet....

WWE Smackdown did a 3.5 rating this week with a 5 share. The show did a 3.4 last week.

But what's interesting is the overnight rating.....

WWE Smackdown scored a 4.8 overnight rating with a 7 share. That is higher than normal. The final rating will be available later today.

-------------

I know this question has been asked ad nauseum, but what is the difference between overnight and final ratings? I can't recall the exact difference but I do remember it had something to do with the overnights being only measured in major markets like big cities (feel free to correct me if I'm way off base here). Usually the difference is around 1.0 but this week it's a difference of 1.3.

For my own amusement, anyone want to make a guess as to what caused the amazing 0.1 jump? We had TWO, not one, but TWO Big Returns here!

You're right about the difference between overnights & final ratings. Overnights cover the 53 top markets (representing roughly 70% of the country), whereas the fast nationals (which don't apply to Smackdown) & finals cover all the markets. Smackdown usually goes down in the final rating because the overnights skew to urban (younger) viewers, and I suppose the assumption is that the rest of the country consists of older people. The overnights are a more "concentrated" sample.

Soo...the fact that the finals are lower than the overnights isn't necessarily bad, considering the kind of audience advertisers want. Rockstar Games probably isn't going to be selling too many copies of GTA: Vice City to 54-year-olds.

Im beginning to think, from a Ratings standpoint at least, that Smackdown moving to Fox would be a success. That 3.5 could easily be a 6.0 or so from the # of people who would watch Smackdown but can't because they don't get UPN.

If SD! continues to kick ass. then i think its almost certain to get in at least the 5.0 range which could be really good for the wwe.

I am shocked the rating didn't go down without the backing of that ratings gold Dawn/Torrie storyline.

They also get lowered because they are available in less markets than other stations; IE NBC or ABC.

Yeah, UPN is a bitch when it comes to being delayed and not available in markets until possibly days after. That's why they need a station where EVERYONE gets the show at once....not seperate days.

A 0.1 jump is actually a little more significant than one would be led to believe... infact, since each full ratings point equals about a million viewers, a 0.1 translates into around an additional 100,000 viewers

But considering it had the return of Taker and Hogan you'd think (theoretically) that there would be a bigger jump than that - well, if you spoke to their fans, that is. ;)

True, I was expecting a bigger jump, but in all fairness, the Hogan return was quite surprising, and since it was in the final segment, I can see why it didn't affect the over all show's ratings. Anyone know what rating number the Hogan segment drew?
