SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders sent All-Pro center Barret Robbins home Sunday after he showed up late for the team's final meeting the night before the Super Bowl, ESPN reported.

Earlier Sunday, CBS SportsLine.com reported that Robbins missed several team events Saturday and didn't return until later in the evening. The Web site, citing sources it did not identify, said head coach Bill Callahan told the team Robbins would be benched in favor of backup Adam Treu.

Robbins, a 6-foot-3, 320-pound player in his eighth season, was expected to help contain Tampa Bay's formidable defensive front, led by All-Pro tackle Warren Sapp. Robbins anchors a line that gave league MVP Rich Gannon enough time to throw for 4,689 yards and direct the NFL's most potent offense.

It could be a crack just big enough to give Tampa's defense the edge over Oakland's offense.

I'm not just talking from a talent perspective. If it's on the minds of the Oakland players at all it could give Tampa the edge.

Oakland didn't blame Robbin's absence for the loss, but the media was sure to use that excuse.

Does anyone have an update on Robbins?

Post-game, Melissa Stark reported that he (and his wife) checked into a SD hospital early Sunday morning, though they didn't give any reasons (lingering foot problems?). The atmosphere seemed a little gloomy over his situation, considering the tone Stark (and Callahan) used.

I'm not saying he did this, but there have been players in the past that went on binges before the big game (that RB from the Bungals in '88 comes to mind...)

He has a history of depression and some have said he seemed down in interviews this week.

Can't be as bad as that Trey Junkin sap that cost the Giants the game. Man, that fucker sounded like he was going to get a bottle of pills, a length of rope, a gun, and a few razors after that debacle.
