Guest saturnmark4life Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 I only remember gee-tar, bass and drums, so what the hey. Morrissey, duh. My favourite of all time, that's all you really need to know. This probably wasn't the best time to start this cos I can't be bothered to post why I like all these people, but here we go. Gibby Haynes Mike Patton (A lot more versatile than he gets credit for) Chris Cornell Robert Plant Speedo Black Francis Maynard James Keenan Till Lindemann Axl Rose (HATE him, but as hair metal goes there's no one better) Les Claypool (not great, but his scream is funny) I think that'll do for now. I should probably go eat some tuna to stimulate my brain.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 We had best frontman, but not best vocalist, if I recall. Although I'm sure some folks will disagree, I've got to go with Jim Morrison as far as vocalists go. Maynard, Peter Steele, and Dax Riggs are a few other favorites, as is Frank Zappa.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 I'm going with Prince. Insane range, among other things. Honorable mentions to King Diamond and Jimmy Urine.
Guest BAR Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Jaymz Hetfield (Metallica) John Garcia (Kyuss) Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath) Freddie Mercury (Queen) David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Guest TheyCallMeMark Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 We had one a long time ago. I am partial to Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Curt Kirkwood and Eddie Vedder. To a lesser extent I'm liking Cantrell, Cornell and that dude from Default. Layne gets me because he can travel all around in this high-pitched world then drop back down into this haunting thing. His voice is so wierd, there's nothing else like it (except for Cantrell). It's like hair metal vocals except about glamourous sex and drugs it's just about drugs. Cobain is just kind of a "so bad it's good" type of deal. His voice was so bad and raw but he didn't hold anything back. If anyone else had his voice it would have been just a lame singer, but Cobain took it and somehow turned it into I HAVE NEVER FELT TO FEEL~! or whatever the fuck he screams. That is hella cool. CURT KIRKWOOD. Yay. I love the Meat Puppets. I love Eyes Adrift. I love Curt Kirkwood. This singing buisness is a bit overated by me because Curt ol' Boy is a ripass guitar player; and being a ripass guitar player never hurts when I'm judging you. But his voice is just excellent for the delivery of his ingenious lyrics... And this isn't best, it's favourite so I will pick who I like. Vedder is obvious for me even though I realize alot of people don't like it. The way he randomly changes his pitch for no apparant reason (maybe to sound epic?) and his long drones which jumble his sentances make me love him very much. I apparantly have a thing for people any normal person can't understand and doesn't care to. Maybe that makes me an elitist.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Staley compared to hair metal vocals? He's anything but.
Guest DrainYou42 Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Kurt Cobain Lemmy Stephen Lynch Paul Westerberg Johnny Rotten Dave Mustaine Ben Folds
Guest The Metal Maniac Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Bruce Dickinson. (Like you didn't see THAT coming...)
Guest AzkulKazul Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Vintersorg (Vintersorg, Borknagar, Otyg) Dan Swano (Edge Of Sanity, Nightingale) Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates, The Great Deceiver, Lock Up) Big Boss (Root) Nergal (Behemoth) Garm (Arcturus, Ulver, Borknagar)
Guest raptor Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace): Packs some intense emotion into a voice that sounds unlike anyone else, as far as I'm concerned. Definatley and aquired taste, though. Robin Wilson (The Gin Blossoms): As good as old college rock gets. At times harsh, sentimental, and full of yearning and addiction.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 Prince is definitely king pimp in this category. Layne Staley is fun because he sounds like he's singing out of a heroin-filled tube in a basement in the pits of hell. I also like Stephen Malkmus' slacker drone, and Elvis Costello's dweeby cutting snarl works too. I will also always have a soft spot for Bono vocals...at least from Achtung Baby and previous.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted January 27, 2003 Report Posted January 27, 2003 James Hetfield (Metallica) Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society) Brian Fair (Shadows Fall) {who DIDN'T see that coming?} Angela Gassow (Arch Enemy) Dani Filth (Cradle Of Filth) Proscriptor (Absu) Tom Araya (Slayer) Warrell Dane (Nevermore) Bruce FUCKIN' Dickinson (Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson) Tim "Ripper" Owens (Judas Priest, Winter's Bane) Paul Baloff (Exodus) {his voice in the songs was fucking great, but his delivery of the lines was usually bad} Burton C. Belle (Fear Factory) Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual) Andi Deris (Helloween) LEMMY (Motörhead) Brynn (Flipp) Rob Zombie (White Zombie, Rob Zombie)
Guest redbaron51 Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 ah the favourites thread...not the best...I was going to bash you corey if you said Dani was a great singer... as my favs'... Geddy Lee (Rush) Bruce Dickinson(Iron Maiden) Jim Morrison (The Doors) Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) Layne Staley (AiC) Maynard James Keenan (Tool, APC) Roger Daultry (The Who) John Lennon (The Beatles)
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 I forgot him before, but I'm going to add Bon Scott to the list. As good as the Young brothers are, AC/DC have produced exactly one good album since his death. That's Bon.
Guest Flyboy Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Axl Rose. ..... ..... ..... What?
Guest godthedog Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 for 'plastic ono band' alone, john lennon will always get my vote. i've never heard anybody unleash a guttural scream quite like him, & he had a way of singing even the softest notes with this passion & rawness i've never heard before or since. godlike talent, combined with taking all the pain in one's life and trying to purge it out purely through one's vocal chords, cannot be beaten. i cannot emphasize enough how much i love the vocals on that album. i find it kind of strange that whenever threads like this pop up, nobody ever mentions the ladies, when there's so many great female vocalists out there. my personal favorite is probably bjork. but there's a ton of them: margo timmins (cowboy junkies), beth gibbons (portishead), sarah mclachlan, etc.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 among the females, I like Siouxsie Sioux, Lydia Lunch, and maybe Sheena Easton for the fabulous Prince duet "U Got the Look"
Guest Kinetic Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 As females go, I dig Patti Smith's vocals. I'm a huge fan of singers that can't sing but just do all sort of torturous things to their vocal cords anyway. On the CD reissue of Horses, there's a cover of "My Generation" and her delivery of the line "I don't need that fucking shit" makes me want to smash things. That, in my opinion, is how you measure a good singer: Their voice and delivery either makes you want to fuck or drives you to violence. In a good way.
Guest Banky Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Bradley Nowell (Sublime) and maybe Jimi Hendrix - he was the all 'round best package.
Guest spiny norman Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Elvis had a great voice. I'm shocked nobody's mentioned him yet! Roy Orbison could cover eight octaves. That's the same amount as a piano. For that he deserves to be on this. Freddie Mercury was the best rock singer, in my opinion.
Guest Dace59 Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Lord Worm (Formly of Cryptopsy) Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) Chuck Schuldiner (Death) RIP Glen Benton (Deicide) James LaBrie (Dream Theater) Tarja Turunen (Nightwish)
Guest Scarlet Pimpernel Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 I've always like Paul Di'Anno, the singer for Iron Maiden on their first 2 albums (& Soundhouse). His loved his gruffy kind of voice, and he does sing some of the older Maiden songs better than Dickinson (but not alot). Oh, and Blaze sucks.
Guest Banky Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Hendrix a good vocalist? He had a very smooth, funky voice. It was perfect the music he played.
Guest R2DFooster McSockman Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, Wayne Coyne, Ian Curtis, Layne Staley, Stephen Malkmus, Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed.
Guest Insanityman Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 In no real order, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, I second Jimmi Hendrix, and since my mother loves the singer- I've become accustomed to Bruce Springsteen... *hides.* But I also like Bon Scott for having a one of a kind voice.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 godthedog, Angela Gassow (Arch Enemy) has been mentioned...she is quite female...
Guest JAxlMorrison Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 1. Axl Rose 2. Jim Morrison 3. Robert Plant IMHO, the three greatest of all time, often imitated and never duplicated.
