Guest ShooterJay Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Well, I signed myself up to intern/co-DJ a Saturday morning jazz show at my college radio station, and I shot myself in the foot already, because in an effort to impress the cute female DJ who runs the show, I lied and said I'd been a huge fan of jazz since I was young. Now, don't get me wrong, I really enjoy jazz in general, but I don't know jack squat about it, so if you couldn't point me to some great jazz musicians, it would be greatly appreciated. Lesser-known ones would score me some huge points with the cute female DJ, so that would be even better. Thanks a lot in advance.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted January 28, 2003 You're fucked. On the plus side, I've really, really been getting into Miles Davis as of late. My most recent Davis acquisition--In a Silent Way--is fantastic.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted January 29, 2003 I'd say that you're obligated to grab Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, if you're interested in Jazz. That is the landmark album in the genre, and a great introductory listen on top of that. Outside of that, if you're looking for a specific track recommendation, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Charles Mingus' turn at "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." (Mingus, overall, isn't a bad listen either.) As far as your request for "quotable figures", here's the basics: - Charlie Parker - John Coltrane - Thelonious Monk (sp?) - Dave Brubeck ("Take Five") - Henry Mancini (a little more accessible, obviously, but there's a ton of jazz influence) And some of the lesser knowns (but still good/influential): - Pat Metheny - Bill Evans - Cannonball Adderly
