LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2003 I would like to burn two CD's one of the best Funk songs and the other of the best Punk songs and I wanted to get some recommendations from the board on what I should download. And when I say "Punk" I want the real stuff not this new stuff.
Guest cobainwasmurdered Report post Posted January 28, 2003 you count Sublime as Punk? If so than download almost anything by them
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2003 I don't really know........part of why I'm doing this is to become more aquainted with these two genres. I felt this was the best place to get input on what was good. I like Sublime so I'll probably download some of theirs regardless of if they're punk or not. Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Are you talking just about 70s/early 80s noise punk where you can barely understand anything? The Vandals are punk...but they're not overly offensive, and I dunno if that's what you're looking for
Guest Brian Report post Posted January 28, 2003 I'd always start with the Clash and curve your interests after that.

Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted January 28, 2003 This is punk recs, and I'm trying to avoid stuff like Pere Ubu and Talking Heads, which if they were to come out today, nobody would call punk. This list is by no means comprehensive. Also, I deliberately left out Minor Threat and Bad Brains because I don't like any songs by either band, but someone else could/should recommend something by either band. 7 seconds - "99 red ballons" The Misfits - "Where Eagles Dare," "Bullet," or "Last Caress" Minutemen - "This Ain't No Picnic" Black Flag - "Revenge," "Nervous Breakdown," "Padded Cell," or "Damaged II" Dead Kennedys - "Holiday in Cambodia" Bad Religion - "American Jesus," "Atomic Garden," "Faith Alone," "Sanity," "I want to Conquer the world," "you are the government)" or pretty much anything off of Suffer, or No Control. Circle Jerks - "Beverly Hills," or "I just want some skank" Ramones - "beat on the brat," "Now I wanna sniff some glue," "pinhead," or "The kkk took my baby away" The clash - "hate and war," "I'm so bored with the usa," or "Janie Jones" The Sex Pistols - "Anarchy in the UK," "God Save the Queen," "Holidays in the sun," or "Pretty Vacant" Avail - "Tuning" or anything else off of Dixie Descendents - "Bikeage," "Catalina," or "Hope" husker du - "newest industry," "turn on the news," "something I learned today," "I'm never talking to you again," and a whole bunch of other stuff I can't think of. X - "Johnny hit and run paulene," or "Nausea" Germs (maybe) - "shutdown (annihilation man)" Operation Ivy -- literally anything Rancid -- "Roots, Radicals" or "Lock, Step and Gone" Stiff little fingers - "Alternative Ulster," or "Nobody's hero" Damned - "Machine Gun Etiquette," or "I feel alright" The dead Boys - "Hey little girl," or "Sonic Reducer" Dropkick Murphy's - "do or die," "get up," "tenant enemy #1" Anti-Flag - "davey destroyed the punk scene," or "You've got to die for the government" Propaghandi - "hate, myth, muscle, etiquette," "fuck machine," "showdown," "anti-manifesto," "resisting tyrannical government," or "ska sucks" dag nasty - "trouble is," or "fall" Fear - "let's have war" or "I love livin in the city" Screeching Weasal - "Veronica hates me", "I'm gonna strangle you," Patti Smith - "Gloria," or "Rock and Roll Nigger," Crass - "Do they owe us a living", "nagasaki nightmare," subhumans - "zyklon b movie" Nofx - "soul doubt," "linoleum," "fleas," or "the brews" Also, I know I'm forgetting stuff, but what can ya do? LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2003 Are you talking just about 70s/early 80s noise punk where you can barely understand anything? The Vandals are punk...but they're not overly offensive, and I dunno if that's what you're looking for I'd say everything listed in the last few posts is along the lines of what I'm looking for. I'm not really looking for the noise punk that you're talking about, but a lot of what was listed strikes my interest. Thank you everyone.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 29, 2003 If I'm not too late, get some Afrika Bambaataa on the funk side of things. "Planet Rock" or "Zulu War Chant" would be good.
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2003 it's never too late.......this is going to take me awhile to download the songs and burn the CD's.......I might end up with more than two. Plus I have a 56k modem.
Guest Banky Report post Posted January 29, 2003 Get any old Sly and the Family Stone. Sly Stone's drug habit officially takes hold of him, and produces wild stuff. And any Sublime, any at all. They are the best...ever.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 29, 2003 Oh yeah, and get Prince's "Work That Fat". I know Prince isn't strictly a funk artist, but that song is a funk masterpiece.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted January 30, 2003 Definitely get The Stooges Fun House. Killer cd. The Dead Kennedys are usually a good bet, too. I'd pick up Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, Bedtime for Democracy, and Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death. Check out some Crass, too.
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2003 I used to listen to Dead Kennedys. My cousin loved that group. Once again thank you everyone for your input.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted February 1, 2003 as far as punk goes my favourites are NOFX, descendents, misfits and AFI. They've been mentioned.
