rant on box office hit movies

Recommended Posts

Guest jedisrm

I decided to start doing my own rants on the top box office movies in us/canada. Every few days or so I will do a different movie, going in order from highest grossing and so on. Feel free to give your comments and opinions.

titanic(1997) 601 million- I say this does NOT belong at the no 1 spot nor decerved the 14(I think) academy awards it won. 3 1/2 hours was too long for me and oh yeah, the ship sinks. This movie is mostly love story. Leo Dicrap sucks. Most interesting parts were Kate Winslet nude and Leo dieing. There was few watchable parts in this film. Mild Recommindation to avoid

I disagree.  When Titanic was being filmed it was all ready taking the title of Biggest Movie Ever Made.  James Cameron had a lot of pressure on him to make that film a success and be pulled it off I would say.  With all the hype surrounding this movie there was only one thing for it to do.  And it did it.

i just remember titanic was supposed to come out summer 1997 but they pushed it back 6 months since they would have gotten much if it did come out in the summer

And when one stops to think about it, what other memorable movies or "must-sees" were there in 1997? That's why Titanic grossed so much. Plus, it had Leonardo DiCaprio, a big teen heart-throb.

2. star wars:a new hope(1977)461 million- Should be number 1. I could go on and on about this movie but I will keep it short. For the .01 % of you that have never seen this movie I quess must have never seen any of the rest of the series either. While, get off your asses and rent this movie now!!!!!!!!!

This is the best movie series ever , and it all started with this movie 25 years ago. Fitting that they have attack of the clones coming out this year. Anyway back to a new hope, its a classic good vs evil sci- fi fantasy story. And no one could ever forget those characters like luke skywalker, han solo, princess leia, darth vader, c3po, r2d2, obiwan kenobi, and chewbacca. Strongest recommendation to see again and again.

I will attempt my own little mini-rants.

1)  Titanic - Winner of 11 Academy Awards, about half of them earned, all for technical achievement.  This thing was a beauty to watch, but the script and editing was horrible.  The reason for its success can be explained by the 'fad' factor.  People went and saw it because it was the thing to do.  Lately, there has been a lot more criticism about this movie.  Especially since Pearl Harbor, a very similar film which was recieved much more poorly, was released.  One of the worst pictures ever to win an Academy Award.  *1/2 (out of 4)

2) Star Wars - While it shouldn't be in the number one spot (That should be Gone with the Wind, I think Tickets Sold is a better indicator than Total Gross), it remains arguably the most influential film of all time.  Jaws started the whole Blockbuster trend, but it was really Star Wars that confirmed it.  The story is incredible, and Alec Guiness & Peter Cushing make up for Mark Hamil & Carrie Fisher somewhat.  Harrison Ford was good here, which is surprising since he is pretty bad in the sequels.  Vader remains the ultimate movie villain, sort of a futuristic version of MacBeth.  What really makes this movie is the final Death Star trench run, which was unlike anything ever seen before.  Regardless this is one of the greatest films in American Cinema.  **** (out of 4)

I'm torn on the subject.  I fuckin' HATE Titanic, but I had enough of Lucas's bullshit when I worked at a United Artists' theater during Phantom Menace's release.

Moulin Rouge

8 Oscar Nominations, yet the first hour has nothin to do with the plot. The singing makes NSYNC look good, the choreography was decent at best, nothin spetacular, and there was way too many things happening on one scene, it made it confusing. I mean, if your gonna do a cover on Roxanne, at least have someone decent to sing it. Ewen McGregor and John Ligwizamo(sp?) were the only decent actors in this whole movie. Nicole Kidman could have been replaced with Sylvia Saint, and this movie would have been better.

Sometimes I think I am truly alone on these boards for loving Titanic and Moulin Rouge.  (sigh)

But a better question might be, why did Titanic take in so much money?  So it had Leo Di, big deal, so did Romeo & Juliet, Man in the Iron Mask, and The Beach, and they didn't take in $600 million COMBINED.  So it was a fad disaster movie, so was Pearl Harbour, and it didn't make nearly as much.  So why did Titanic succeed so well?

Seeing Pearl Harbour was never 'in' the way seeing Titanic was.

But that still doesn't explain what made it the best-selling movie of all time.  The Matrix was tremendously "in", but it still didn't do those numbers.  The polls showed that a lot of that revenue came from people seeing Titanic over and over again.

I'd rather see Two Towers or Return of the King beat out Titanic.  But that's just the Jackson fanboy in me talking

Only if Jar-Jar dies.  Because if Jar-Jarmania runs wild on us, it's really not worth it.

By the way it looks jar jar isnt in this movie that much and hopeful will die in here or ep 3(more likely 3). There was people(mostly female) that saw titanic 5000 times at the theatres and it came out in december and had no compition at all. Unlike other movies.

while Im at it I'll do my next rant

3. star wars: phantom menace(1999)431 million- Most consider this the worst star wars movie. Well, this has its pros and cons.

Cons- jar jar was a gay character, jake lyold sucked, it was disappionting after the 16 year wait, story wasnt as good as the other movies, too many CG characters, and darth maul and qui-gon jinn died(I thought they would have them both at least also alive in ep2, not to mention that maul was haped the big villian and was there for 10 minutes and liam neeson(jinn) was the best actor in this movie IMO)

Pros- its star wars, get to see obi-wan kenobi fight when he was young, get to see padme(future lover of anakin and mom of luke & leia), lightsaber duels are awesome(what made the movie), and podrace was good too.

From a Star Wars point of view and for the sake of seeing a Star wars movie, I say strongly recomminded....But from normal movieviewer point of view I have to go with a mildly recomminded.

OH yeah, I gurantee episodes 2 and 3 will be must better.

You forgot to mention the Disney-style mass marketing.  Actually, there was so much marketing it blew away Disney's marketing so much that I was expecting a new NHL team called the Skywalker Ranch Gungans to be created.

The podrace WAS cool, but once I realized that it was there to push the Star Wars: Racer game it kinda lost it's lustre.  Just my opinion though.

i will do the next one since it will come back to theatres tomorrow.

4. et(1982)400 million- They are celebrating et's 20 anniversary by bringing it back to theatres tomorrow. Et was that little alien creature came to the earth for a while to stay with elliot and his family. Everyone loved et. Et is like a household pet until the government comes in, believing et is there to harm people. I have enjoyed this movie over the years and seen it at least 15 times. One of Steven Spielberg's best. Its fun for all ages. Strongly recomminded(and might as well go see it at the theatre too).
