Guest Mole Report post Posted January 28, 2003 The other day I was flipping through the movie channels. I have digital cable, so I can see what the movies are without actually changing the channel. Bully came up, and I thought it was that movie with Tom Arnold and Rick Moranis(sp?). I know that movie is bad, but I remember it being sorta funny. Anyway, it turned the movie was something completely different. For those who haven't see it, Bully is about this teenager, Bobby, who picks on his good friend Marty all the time. In the begginning of the movie, two girls, Ali and Lisa, walk into a grocery store and meet the two boys. Bobby offers to meet up with the girls, hoping to get with one of them. Marty ends up with Lisa, the girl who isn't as slutty and good looking as Ali. Later on in the movie, Bobby does something to Ali that is really terrible, and these kids want to kill Bobby for his crappy well-being as a human. This movie is based on a real story, but is done very well. It takes awhile for the plot to get going, but it all makes up for it at the end. Everything sets up perfectly, and a great film comes out of it. There is lots of sex, drugs, and stupid shit that teenagers do. Has anyone else seen it, and if so, what did you think of it? If you haven't seen it, go to Blockbuster or wherever you get movies, and rent this today.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Yah, it is made by the same director as KIDS....they actual found legal girls that actually appear to be teenagers. And the sex is done in such a REALISTIC nature, it feels rather uncomfortable watching it with ANYONE....but good movie.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 28, 2003 I have it on DVD. I know there's a few people that bash this movie, but I don't care, I fucking love it. The most common complaints I hear are that it is gratuitous, and unrealistic. As far as the gratuitous claim, I can't deny that parts of it are, but it serves it's purpose. This is a character study of a group of kids, and as someone who has spent time with people like them, I can say the somewhat pornagraphic style really does set a tone, and helps to contrast starkly between the world that they live in, and the real world, which unfortunately for them, they will eventually have to face. It works in the same way the gangsta rap soundtrack contrasts with the Fatboy Slim track at the end. As for the unrealistic claim, I am familiar with the real case, because I use to live around the area that it went down, and it's a fairly accurate portrayal. The characters may behave stupidly at times, but that's just the way they are. To me, this movie belongs in the same category as Fight Club, American Psycho, and, as it is a true story, things like Jackass. It's a monument to urban decay, the way in this day and age, boredom, lack of beliefs, causes and convictions degenerate us into a sociopathic id, and it happens under our very noses. And besides all that, it's a riveting story, and also quite funny at times. So yeah, great movie. By the way, the Tom Arnold flick was called Big Bully. Guest Mole Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Ahh, that's it. Yeah, I forgot to mention the fact that Larry Clark directs the movie. And what do you mean by some people think the movie is un-realistic? The setting that the people are in? Or the way the kids act? I don't know about the setting, but the way the kids act is SO true. I know plenty of kids who act just like that, when it comes to drugs and sex. Well, not so much the gay porn shit, but everything else, yeah.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 28, 2003 The way the kids act. I think it's just a matter of people having absolutely no understanding of the way kids are, especially their parents. If the movie had a lesson, that was it.
Guest Mole Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Really? People thought kids don't act like that? Wow, that just shows how ignorant some people can be. Yes, that was a big lesson in the movie. Especially when it came to Bobby's father, telling him not to hang out with Marty anymore. The only reason Marty was doing so poorly was because of Bobby's influence on him. Well I think that was the reason, or the one I just caught.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Yeah, the thing about it is (and if you're interested in the story, I suggest reading the book of the same name) spoilers The kids killed somebody. They were murderers. And yet at the trial and shit, not one of their parents would say they did anything wrong. They were all like, "Oh they're just kids. Give them another chance, these things happen." They're basically saying boys will be boys... to murder. That's fucked up.
Guest Mole Report post Posted January 28, 2003 SPOILERs One thing that didn't make any sense was the sentence to Ali and Heather. How come they got 7 years, when they didn't do anything? Ali did drive the car, but Heather really didn't do jack shit. Maybe it was because of conspiracy to murder, but that is all I can think of. Plus Rachel got life, but she didn't do very much either, if memory serves me correct. Do you know Milk?
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 28, 2003 spoiler By Rachel, I assume you mean Rachel Miner, her character's name was Lisa. Anyway, she didn't do much during the actual killing, but she was one of the main instigators. The sentences they showed at the end were their initial sentences, but a lot of them were changed on appeal and what not. Marty had his death sentence overturned, so he's serving life. After a quick check of their files on the Florida DOC site, I see that Ali and Heather are already out, and have been for a while, so they didn't end up serving much time. Donnie was busted for dealing coke and assault within a week of his arrival in prison. Crazy fucker.
Guest Mole Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Yeah, I meant Lisa. I just got their names mixed up. Oh okay, that makes sense. Thanks bro.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted January 28, 2003 I didn't like the movie, I had heard so much indy hype crap over it and wanted to see it. Gee, this guy says he's a hitman, let's just trust him on it, afterall, he doesn't look the part. And I just didn't think the acting was good.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted January 28, 2003 I didn't care for it all that much either. It was ok, but that's about it. All of the kids were so damn annoying. I liked Kids alot better. Kids did a better job of handling the "this is how today's kids are" aspect and was just a more complete movie. Bully had too many pointless "teen" sex scenes and they got in the way of the story. Guest RobJohnstone Report post Posted January 28, 2003 this movie not only sucked but, I did not appreaciate all the homosexual acts going on as well. I also thought the acting was terrible, especially when they try to plot against that guy. Two Thumbs down. --Rob
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Gee, this guy says he's a hitman, let's just trust him on it, afterall, he doesn't look the part. This is kinda what I meant about the realism part. Nothing against you YnA, because this is incredibly stupid behavior, and yet, that's what they actually did. They really were that stupid. I know some people just don't dig it, and that's fine. I just disagree with the unrealistic argument.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted January 28, 2003 i personally loved it. it was like 'kids', only with, you know, CHARACTERS. i absolutely LOVE the look that larry clark gave it. the kids are always sweaty and without makeup, they're in the open air all the time, the wind blowing...very few movies i've seen can give off a visual texture like that and give the impression that it feels like the characters are really there. it's hard to explain, but about 99% of movies make their characters look like characters in a movie. 'bully' made it look like they were real people in a real place, and off the top of my head i can only think of 2 other movies that did the same thing. Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted January 28, 2003 I didn't like it as much as Kids, but it was still a pretty good movie. People saying it's unrealistic doesn't make much sense, becuase it is, for the most part, things that really happened.
Guest JAxlMorrison Report post Posted January 29, 2003 I saw it cause I saw Renfro and Stahl were in it, and I am a big fan of both. What I got was a mind blowing, graphic and yes, realistic film based on a fucked up true story. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Oh and yes, Donnie was a crazy fuck SPOILER "I stabbed him like once, and the blade barely went in" "What about the other ten times?" silence LOL
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted January 29, 2003 The movie was good, it was VERY realistic IMO. That is literally how a lot of TEENAGERS act when thinking about drugs and sex. A lot of casualness and thinking they are in control of everything. The only thing that got to me, was that there wasn't at least ONE PERSON in the group that stopped and thought, "umm wtf, we aren't really doing this, right?" Guest converge241 Report post Posted January 29, 2003 jesus! this is like the 4th thread for this movie let me just re-iterate that i am in love with rachel miner and enjoy her scenes immensly *some more than others* see also on cable/video teenage caveman
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 29, 2003 Teenage Caveman was crazy. When it started, I was like "Well, this really sucks." and when one particular character was introduced I was like "Who the fuck is this idiot?" but by the end I loved both the movie and the character. Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted January 29, 2003 this movie not only sucked but, I did not appreaciate all the homosexual acts going on as well. Aww, does the homosexual stuff make you feel uncomfortable? Anyway, I liked the film as well. The kids are complete idiots though. I know there are kids out there who act like that, and I feel really sorry for them. Talk about a pathetic existence.
