Guest raptor Report post Posted January 30, 2003 Article Link I mean, I like Austen and all... but ANOTHER comic? When did he become Marvel's new "it" boy. I can understand Bendis writing so much stuff, but he's actually, you know, good. can't remember all of them off hand, but: Captain America Uncanny X-Men X-Men Unlimited X-2 Movie Prequel: Wolverine 411 Eden's Trail rewrites The Call and I know there are some things that I'm missing As for the article: Jae Lee's art look's purty. Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted January 30, 2003 He better remember he's writing CAPTAIN AMERICA and not THE CALL OF DUTY. We've gotten enough of the post 9/11 crap, let's get some fucking superhero stories now.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted January 30, 2003 Austen has done a good job on Uncanny X-Men by making it readable once again but as was stated above, my confidence in Austen going into 9/11 mode with Cap and stripping the character of even more of his original elements and bastardizing him for the purposes of using 9/11 as a plot is pretty shakey right now. But like Mike Grell, I'll give Austen a chance before I write him off like Marvel has done with Grell.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted January 30, 2003 But like Mike Grell, I'll give Austen a chance before I write him off like Marvel has done with Grell Sass, so what are your thoughts on Grell's Iron Man run? I recently heard that a new guy was comig on board for issue #65(?). Sorry to go off topic. And I agree with you, he made Uncanny readable again. If he can do like Bendis and deliver quality product on a wide number of titles then more power to him.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted January 31, 2003 Personally, I hated Grell's run on Iron Man. I knew that Grell working on Iron Man was going to be a mixed bag what with Grell's policy on not using established super villains in his books but I never imagined how lacking his run could have been with the piss poor stories he gave us. fans rag on Tieri but Grell's run ranks up there as well in the all-time shitty runs of a writer on Iron Man. It was putrid to watch Iron Man fight the Mandrin's worthless son and then see him come close to beating Iron Man without even the use of his dad's rings and super powers. Just an awful run by Grell who I hope will never be let near a super hero book again as he is more suited for a book where drug dealers and pimps are the main adversaries. Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted January 31, 2003 Grell is best suited for someone like Green Arrow who has never really had a solid Rogue's Gallery per say and has mainly fought crooks, drug dealers, terrorists and hitmen rather than costumed super villains. The lack of super villains in Iron Man was something I saw coming in Grell's IM run but goddamn, there just wasn't anything redeemable about it. Having IM reveal his identity to the world was also a mistake in my opinion but we'll see how Marvel handles it down the road.

I guess the common man in the Marvel Universe is supposed to forget that there was an Iron Man running around when Stark was "dead"? Granted it was the War Machine armour but the public didn't know that at the time...
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted January 31, 2003 I just hope this new wirter coming in for Iron Man brings back some super villians and puts to good use the armor's weapons and fighting capability. I can't recall any of the weaponry being used in quite some time. Fighting an "indestructible" martial artist and dragons and sorcerers are not really what IM should be doing. Now fighting Thor, Lord of Asgard, that's the stuff! Alan Davis penciling, yeah! Even though I do like the current artist. So yeah, you can say I disliked Grell's run in IM too. Let's rename this as the Iron Man Thread! What do you say? (Just kidding)
Guest starvenger Report post Posted January 31, 2003 Back on the topic of Austen, there's an interesting interview with him at 411Mania. It deals mostly with Uncanny X-Men #417, and there are spoilers there (hence the link only), but it's quite entertaining - especially his rant about work-for-hire. I highly recommend that you check it out. edit: Sorry, that should be #418 - Dominant Species part 2.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted January 31, 2003 I will say this: Whoever takes over the reigns of being the writer for Iron Man had better be familiar with the character and look at what didn't work over the last couple of years. That was a good interview with Austen as well.
