Bring it On...

Yes, I know this movie is pretty corny and a chick flick.

However, I guess it is another guilty pleasure movie for myself. I just love watching this hot chicks cheer around like that. Since Eliza is in the movie, it is what made it even better.

What do you fellas think?

I like to ogle the girls, and as such I like the flick. I'm not normally one to like a movie purely for the T and A factor, but this is one of those times.

I'm pissed they made Eliza's character into one of them, as opposed to the infinitely more attractive "dark" one. That, and her brother in the film is a carbon copy of my cousin, which is just scary.

I've never seen the movie, but with every preview I've ever seen, I can safely say that I'd tag just about every girl in it.

It's a guilty pleasure of mine. Also not a particularly bad movie as far as these things go, either...

I bought it for the mere fact that Eliza was in it. :) Not a bad movie, all in all, either. If you have a couple of hours to waste, then it's something you can just pop in and enjoy.

My girlfriend dragged me (literally) to this movie, and I was absolutly shocked that I didn't hate it. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 10, but American Beauty got like a 100.

Eliza

I also didn't hate it and there are quite a few hotties in it, but I'd be remiss if I didn't pimp Sugar & Spice as the better cheerleading movie.

I like both Sugar & Spice and Bring It On. I liked S&S' plot better but I thought the cheerleading itsself was better in Bring It On.

A decent enough movie (yes, yes, anything with Eliza rised above merely decent), but I found the plot of the black school vs. the white school kinda annoying. I mean, after it was exposed that the cheers were stolen, the usefulness of having the school they were stolen from was pointless; the interesting thing was how the white school dealt with it, not trying to beat the other school.

Is it just me, or did the movie seem somewhat sanitized? Like, it was originally supposed to be an R rated movie, but they cut out most of the mature elements in favor of a lower rating.

I have never seen it all the way through, but the T & A's nice. Not sure if it is good movie or not, as, whenever it's on television, I seem to turn it on right at the end

Sugar and Spice is also a tolerable movie. For example, I actually saw it by choice. And the lead actress, who promptly fell off the face of the earth after the movie was released, is pretty funny.

I bought this DVD blind a few weeks ago (it was $5 used), and I was pretty pleasantly surprised by how good it was. It wasn't nearly as brainless as I expected. Eliza, Kirsten, Gabrielle Union, Lindsay Sloane, etc... are all great eye candy, plus the movie ends with a rendition of "Mickey". Gotta love it.

Also, Peyton Reed's commentary on the DVD is pretty hilarious, especially as he's talking over the closing credits. It's easily one of my favorite commentary tracks ever. If you liked this in the theatre, it might be worth picking up the DVD if you find it on sale somewhere, since it's pretty packed (including an extended cut of the car wash scene).

Yeah, but it would have been unsatisfying if Gabrielle & co. were introduced as a plot device, only to never be shown again. Plus, the movie still had to build to some kind of competition at the end, and you needed some tension at the end to see who would get the top prize. You couldn't NOT have the East Compton girls as their rivals. Plus, it was important for Kirsten's team to get second place (at least they got there on their own, even though they had little time to come up with a new routine), and if one of those other, generic cheerleading teams had won, it would've kinda sucked.

I just wish we had seen more of Lindsay Sloane's bitchy character. I've been a fan of her & her big hooters ever since Grosse Pointe was on the air. Also, I was half-expecting Eliza to give someone an ass-kicking, and I was a little disappointed that she didn't (I watched the movie shortly after finishing my Buffy S3 DVDs). Still, this is a really fun movie.

Anyone notice all the Buffy people in the film?

Eliza(Faith), Clare Kramer(Glory; played Courtney in BIO), Nicole Bilderback(Member of Cordelia/Harmony's cliq in "The Wish"; played Whitney in BIO), okay that's it. But still, three people.

Also, Christophe Beck scored Bring It On (Peyton does a shout-out to his Buffy work on the commentary track)

I just read an interview where he addresses this:

It was always intended to be a PG-13 movie. I was actually obligated to deliver a PG-13 movie. There was much discussion early on when this movie was being conceived whether it would be PG 13 or R. My feeling about this is that if I'm a teenager and the movie is rated R I'm going to feel screwed. Also, I think this movie would have really had to go out of it's way to be a hard R rating. When you have a film about cheerleading you are not going to have blatant nudity and stuff like that. What I wanted to do was to make a movie that would sell right into the PG 13 rating- not PG, PG13. Anyone over 13 is OK for that movie. All the ratings are really objective. What's OK for one person is not OK for someone else. The battles we had with the MPAA were all over language. It was certain words and mostly double entendres. The MPAA is a fascinating subject in and of itself. You never know who the people are when you submit the movie. The studio is the go between so you don't talk to the MPAA directly. You'll talk to the studio who'll say they have trouble with this scene or this line, and then when you ask really direct questions like will this help- they can't answer that. They'll say try and submit it and we'll see what happens. It's very hard to get a straight answer from the MPAA. Finally I was allowed to talk to the MPAA directly about certain things, and again they don't give you a straight answer. If I cut this word out will that give me a PG-13? They'll reply, well, try it and submit it and we'll tell you. There's only a certain amount of time the studio wants to resubmit. It's a very weird process. I think the considerations rating wise for sex and violence is very different than language. I think it's ridiculous that the R rating can encompass something like "Reservoir Dogs" and "Natural Born Killers" that are pretty violent, and it can include "Billy Elliot". If you look at "Billy Elliot" it's a very nice coming of age movie. It's only rated R because they say fuck all the time. Obviously some parents would find that objectionable, but the fact that one rating encompasses "Billy Elliot" and "Reservoir Dogs" is really weird. There must be a better way to have a ratings system. I think PG 13 has kind of changed. It's a weird rating anyway. What's the real difference between a PG movie and a PG 13 movie except that a PG 13 movie is a better bet at the box office.

Slightly off topic, but about the MPAA:

I still can't believe Titanic didn't get an R rating- it had nudity, and some "s" and "f" words a few times in it. I've seen films with much less objectionable content get R ratings.

So... does this make me the only person who didn't like Bring it On? Well, that's discouraging.

As for the cheerleaders, yea I guess some of the girls are hot, but I've always had this philosophy about a movie - if I want T&A I'll rent a porno. But then, we never had cheerleaders at my high school so maybe I'm missing part of a forbidden "nerd lusts for jock's girlfriend" appeal.

However, I will admit to laughing at the one cheerleader who, upon seeing some guy wearing a Clash shirt, asked "Is that your band?" Useless egotistical self-promoting fact of the day: this inspired the phrase/gimmick of ONE REDEEMING SCENE~! since it was the only thing I remember from the film other than the black people are plot devices.

Talking 'bout cheerleading...

No one, and I mean NO ONE can beat The Replacements cheerleading team. Well, maybe that ones from Baseketball.

But you guys are right, both Sugar and Bring it are at least watchables movies.

The best cheerleading team ever was the one from Debbie Does Dallas. Now that's a great movie. Not just a great porno. A great movie.

Perhaps it was the handling. As it was, they were little more than cliches who only existed to drive the competition aspect. Granted, this movie wasn't trying to break any new ground, but it would've been nice to have some interesting characters on the East Compton team; other than Garielle, the team was as faceless as all of the other cheerleading teams.

The most interesting aspects of the movie, to me, were the very few moments when the cheerleaders were actually dealing with the fact that their championship winning cheers were stolen and that this dynasty was a sham. The competition aspect was less interesting, though I realize that that was what the movie was built on, which probably factors into my statement of the jetisoning of mature themes from it.

It's puzzling, though, that the film was always intended as PG13. Watching it I'd thought there were quite a few places where nudity and more sexual situations would've been appropriate, not to mention merely having a more mature air about the movie. Perhaps I was seeing opportunities that were not really there.

I hate these movie simply for the fact that they don't have nudity. I know I may be petty and juvenile for this viewpoint, but the subject matter and theme to these movies SCREAMS T&A, yet the actresses used are always so "famous" that there will never be nudity. I remember watching Crazy Beautiful and wondering why in the hell was Dunst not topless at least ONCE....then I heard she actually filmed nudity but after her mon saw the raw cut, she told Dunst to make the director chop it out.

Everyone says you don't need nudity to make the sensual scenes realistic, but I disagree. When two people have sex, and the women gets out of the bed, (in real life) she never grabs the sheet or blanket to cover herself completely, and if she does, she does such a halfass job it barely covers her. I was watching the commentary on The Doors dvd, and Francis Ford Coppella supported this argument and brought up the scene in the bed with Meg Ryan where you briefly see her breasts(nipple and all) but for no reason she user her arm to cover them up. He said, this totally RUINED the "60's free love/sex" moment" I happen to agree
