Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Yeah this is a bummer. I'm always fascinated by space. The scarriest part is 3 days ago was the 17th anniversary of Challenger. Years from now, Januarry at NASA is going to be a somber month.
Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Say goodbye to the space program for five years, ladies and gents. Which is kind of a sad thing, since this is a risk that you assume they choose to take by running a program like this. We're down to two space shuttles. Hope Hubble is good to go for a while because Columbia was the only shuttle assigned to fixing it. As for the International Space Station, the guys onboard can just ride one of the Escape Pods home. Let's hope that while we've pulled out of doing things in space, that we can work on technology a bit so that we don't have men flying out on machines that were made way back in the 70s. Guest Texas Small Arms 09 Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Most of the shuttle debris fell near Nachadoches, TX and they are finding all sorts of things. They have found parts of the shuttle the size of a washing machine and they are now starting to find the body parts of the crew. A guy I know has been out there helping search and guard the debris, but of course Texans are showing that they can be labeled stupid, as over 50 people have been taken to the hospital for burns because those morons were actually stupid enough to touch it. Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted February 2, 2003 they are now starting to find the body parts of the crew You're kidding me? The combination of the heat, the speed, the height, and the explosion itself leave the chances of finding any body parts to be highly suspect.
Guest Texas Small Arms 09 Report post Posted February 2, 2003 No I'm not kidding you. They aren't find much, but they have found body parts (as far as bones) My neighboir's brother has been out there all day helping in the search and told us that it's a really disturbing thing and you couldn't even imagine the damage
Guest DrTom Report post Posted February 2, 2003 The combination of the heat, the speed, the height, and the explosion itself leave the chances of finding any body parts to be highly suspect. Not really. The cabin of the shuttle is the most well-protected part of it, and is designed to remain stable even if something happens to the rest of the ship. It's very possible these seven astronauts were alive a good portion of the way down.
Guest B-X Report post Posted February 2, 2003 I find that so disturbing Tom.

Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted February 2, 2003 They found the Challenger crew all together in that capsule after that explosion, and you can use your own imagination of what they found in that.
Guest Texas Small Arms 09 Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Well I know they have found arm parts and leg parts. I really don't think if that was someone I loved if I would want them to find the body. I know finding the body would bring closure, but maybe not knowing is best too
Guest Lil Naitch Report post Posted February 2, 2003 About time to start designing a new Shuttle, me thinks. Maybe one where, in an emergency, the capsul with the astronauts can be ejected and parachute down to earth.
Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted February 3, 2003 Maybe one where, in an emergency, the capsul with the astronauts can be ejected and parachute down to earth. That'd be awfully heavy. They have to be kept as light as possible. There's about a 2% failure rate. It's pretty much accepted when you take the job.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted February 3, 2003 I read in an article on CNN that no ejection is possible since the altitude would be suicidal.
Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted February 3, 2003 I read in an article on CNN that no ejection is possible since the altitude would be suicidal. Not to mention the speed they're flying at would tear up any parachute.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted February 3, 2003 Ejection isn't really possible. You can't eject individual astronauts that high into the atmosphere, since they'll get incinerated upon re-entry. Never mind what 12,000+ mph does to a parachute. You also can't eject the crew cabin reliably. It would have to be redesigned to have heat shielding of its own, which is probably doable. The question becomes stopping it. It's falling from 40 miles in the sky, so you need something that will stop a craft plummeting thru the atmosphere at terminal velocity. Parachutes would again be out of the question, and some kind of retro-rocket would be difficult to implement. Shuttle technology, though, IS over 30 years old. I think we need to bring something new to the table. I think we needed to bring something new to the table 17 years ago.

Just to add-on to JotW's comments: From the Snopes.com messageboard (which I believe is a good source): A video image of a helmet that dropped into a yard in Norwood Community, Texas from the space shuttle Columbia is seen February 1, 2002. Many parts of the shuttle along with HUMAN REMAINS were found in the area. NASA officials later removed the helmet.

Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted February 3, 2003 I wonder if any of them turn out to be gay, mr. fauwell will go on another rant saying, Homosexual space men don't get god's protection. I wish one of Falwell's kids would suddently turn gay. For that matter, I wish a number of family members, children, and relatives of our elected officials would acquire sicknesses too. I know that sounds almost sick, but judging by how much money Nancy Reagan once provoked the Republicans to donate towards Alzheimers for Ronnie's sake, I get the feeling we'd suddently discover cures and treatments faster if that happened. Guest bravesfan Report post Posted February 3, 2003 And despite the tragedy... credit msnbc.com Others had mercenary reasons for collecting pieces of the debris. Within hours of Saturday’s accident, listings for pieces of debris began appearing on the eBay Internet auction site. The company quickly removed them. NASA spokesman Bruce Buckingham said he was stunned. “We live in an evil world, and there are people that will do those types of things,” he said at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA does not know whether the items are authentic, but “even someone pretending to sell something that came from Columbia is still bad,” Buckingham said. ... Guest Texas Small Arms 09 Report post Posted February 3, 2003 The government said that if any piece is sold on ebay they will trace it back to the seller and arrest them. The penalty is 10 years in jail for tampering with federal evidence and a fine of $250,000.

I wonder if the bleeding hearts will blame George Bush for the accident. All kidding aside, why did you bring this up. well whenever there is any type of tragedy, Mr. Fauwell or Roberts, likes to come on tv and break it down, as to why it all happened. Since what I said above is LIKELY something they would say, I felt it was appropriate, but mostly is was for mere humor.

Guest Dangerous A Report post Posted February 4, 2003 You wanna know what's fucking sick. There are some people who have attained pieces of the Columbia and ARE SELLING THEM ON EBAY!!! Actually, were selling them, ebay put a stop to it. Still, what sick fuck would do such a thing?
