The more recient one was Reggie Brown. #60 Mike Utley was paralized about 10 years ago too. He did the famous "thumbs up" while he was being carted off the field...that was kinda the Lions trademark for the next season. Racing Porches down road w/teamate David Wesley and Phills spun out of control and he died in the crash. I was shocked when that happened. I feel bad for the whole team especially Wesley. Malik Sealy- Out of St Johns here in NY. On the T-wovles and he was coming home from a teamates party when his car went out of control and he died. Very sad Dennis Bird, player for the Jets. Guest Brush with Greatness Report post Posted February 4, 2003 Pelle Lindbergh - outstanding young goalie for the Flyers in the early/mid 80's. Drove drunk and crashed his Porsche into a rock. Brain-dead, and the plug was pulled a few days later. I remember that. He was very good. His death is what opened the door for Ron Hextall -- then playing with Hershey in the AHL -- to get called up to the big club and almost single-handedly beat the Oilers in '86. Actually, it was the 87 playoffs that Hextall almost single handedly defeated the Flyers. 86 was Flames-Canadians. And let me echo the sentiments about the 72 Munich Olympics. For anyone who does not know what happened or would like to know more let me recommend the awesome documentary "One Day in September". If that happened today it would easily go down as the biggest sports tragedy in history. Actually Mantle was probably more tragic as Joe D lived a full and long life while Mickey was taken too soon and from his own demons finally coming to haunt him. Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted February 5, 2003 Alot of people have been mentioning Dale Earnhardt's death, so I figured I'd go a different route and name a few other tragic motorsports related deaths. Alan Kulwicki--Died in a plane crash in '93, the year after he won the championship. He was on top of the world. He was the first driver/owner to win since Richard Petty, a feat that's unheard of now days. He was just starting to hit his peak, and who knows what he could of done. Davey Allison--Died in a Helicopter crash in '93. Son of former champion Bobby Allison. He had finished the last season almost winning the championship, and was pretty much poised to win the '93 season. He was a talented driver who could have done much with the team he was with. Tim Richmond--The man was Dale Earnhardt before Dale was "DALE". You put him behind the wheel, and he'd claw and fight his way to the front. He'd do anything to win, to be the best. Unfortunately he died of pneumonia, as a result of having HIV in the 80's. If he had still been alive, we'd probably have never heard of Jeff Gordon. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
