Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Figured I'd do a more upbeat post, after my depressing "Tragic Moments in Sports". McGee grounds to Gaetti over to Hrbek. The Twins had won the World Series. The Gophers beat Maine 4-3, to win the NCAA Championship. Everyone at my parents house was going crazy when Koalchuk (sp), tied the game with under a minute left, and than Gran Pautulny the only player not from Minnesota scored the winning goal. The Twins beat Oakland in game 5. AJ Pierzynski's home run was the most memorable moment. Dan Nystrom's game winning field goal against #1. Penn St. in Beaver Stadium. Magic Johnson's shot to put the Celtics on Ice in Gm 6 of the 1985 finals.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Any game-winning field goal kick against Sappy Valley would qualify in my book. Other than that, the first thought that came to my mind was Game 3 of the 1992 NLCS. I was at that game when Tim Wakefield pitched a complete game against the Atlanta Braves. The atmosphere was incredible...
Guest bravesfan Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Most recently, Luis Gonzalez' bloop single RBI that won the Arizona Diamondbacks their 1st World Series. The added significance of the win (over the Yankees, bottom of the 9th, scored off of the best closer [Rivera] in the game) made it all the more enjoyable to watch. Guest treble charged Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Joe Carter's World Series winning home run in 1993 really sticks out. Everytime the crowd in Toronto chants 'EDDIE' at Ed Belfour when he makes a big save. That makes me proud to be a Leafs fan, as it's pretty much the people in attendance saying, 'We were wrong about you, you CAN get the job done'.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Buster Douglas' KO of Mike Tyson in Tokyo. Don't get me wrong, Douglas was a chump in the long run, but on that one night, he put on one of the single greatest performances I've EVER seen in a boxing ring. Going in as a FORTY TO ONE underdog against the guy who'd destroyed every single fighter that had got in his way. That kind of thing has to be absolutely suffocating. Iron Mike's aura of invincibility was totally gone after that fight, as Douglas just did everything right, frustrating Tyson beyond belief. Not only that, but he took Tyson's best shot, and a barrage of violence that followed, and stayed up after getting put on the mat, which NO ONE had ever come close to doing, and then came back and put Tyson on his ass. Absolutely incredible. In retrospect, though, Tyson was ripe for an upset, as he obviously didn't take Douglas seriously (and why should he?), not to mention the inner turmoil that his life has always been, coupled with the fact that his cornermen were completely inept, and had no answer for the very simple yet very effective strategy and rhythm that Buster had going. He was never worth a shit after that, but on that one night, he was a fuckin' god. Definitely the best upset story in any sport that I've ever seen.
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted February 2, 2003 A pitcher coming out of a game and getting a standing ovation. Like Pedro Martinez in the playoffs, coming out in the 7th or 8th, and the fans just standing and applauding. Even though I hate the team, the Red Wings traditional octopus toss in the playoffs. And Vern, I remember that goal. Even though I was rooting for Maine, that was still a fantastic hockey game.

Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted February 2, 2003 McGwire's 62nd is pretty much the best one I can think of, and probably why I don't care about Bonds's record. It wasn't the national spectacle that McGwire's was.

Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted February 2, 2003 The 2001 and 2002 World Series. Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run. The '93 NBA Finals: Bulls v. Suns (Jordan v. Barkley). The '99 Super Bowl, which is the most dramatic football game I've ever watched. Watching ANY hockey or baseball game live (talk about different ends of the spectrum). Kenny Lofton getting punched in the teeth (it hasn't happened yet, but I will be watching for it - take it to the bank).
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted February 2, 2003 The Mets v. Braves- first home game at Shea at 9.11 Seeing the Mets come from behind and win and seeing a crowd full of people forget about their troubles for just a little bit was just a really emotional thing to see and even I teared up watching- and not cause the Braves lost
Guest Smues Report post Posted February 2, 2003 NLCS 1992, game 7. I'l admit I counted the Braves out by the end of that one, then they put together my favorite inning ever. I can watch that inning over and over and over and never get bored. BRAVES WIN, BRAVES WIN, BRAVES WIN! Chicago Bulls NBA finals victories in 92,93,97,98 (91 and 96 weren't very exciting) Anytime the Yankees lost McGwire's 62nd homerun Duke's last second victory again Kentucky in 92. Guest MillenniumMan831 Report post Posted February 2, 2003 The Browns BARELY getting past The Bills in the 1989 Div Playoff game. Clay Matthews picking off a Jim Kelly pass at the goal line with 4 seconds remaining had my 8 year old ass running up and down the house! The Bills went on to lose 4 straight Super Bowls after this loss. More recently, this past season for The Browns. From the helmet toss, OT games, the hail mary, the goal line stand, heartbreaking losses, the William Green emergence, ect. I also thought that it was very cool to see The Browns eek into the playoffs when there were 7 teams eligible for just 2 spots going into Sunday.
Guest D'Lo White Report post Posted February 2, 2003 The Mets/Braves NLCS from 1999. The Mets didn't win, but the last 3 games in that series were so dramatic. The Rangers winning the cup for the first time in 54 years in 1994, ending the 19-40 chants from stupid Islander fans. The Knicks/Bulls rivalry in the early 90's. I never marked out like I did for John Starks dunk over 3 Bulls in that playoff game.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted February 3, 2003 Joe Carter's World Series winning home run in 1993 really sticks out. Bastard! The entire 1993 season for the Phillies was *so* much fun. Then that 15-14 game & Carter's homerun had to go ruin it. Miami/FSU - Wide Right I and II and III The Bills/Titans playoff game (Music City Miracle) - not a Titans fan, but I hate the Bills so much. The 2001 76'ers season was also another fun year, as well as the win in Game 1 vs. the Lakers.

Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 3, 2003 "The Rangers winning the cup for the first time in 54 years in 1994, ending the 19-40 chants from stupid Islander fans." EVERYBODY did that 19-40 chant -- good times. "The Bills/Titans playoff game (Music City Miracle) - not a Titans fan, but I hate the Bills so much." I remember watching that entire game, and then going into the other room when right before that final kickoff. Grrr...
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted February 3, 2003 My number one moment will always be Kirk Gibson limping out to the batters box in Game 1 of the World Series, somehow fighting Eckersley (at that time THE dominant closer in baseball...seemed pretty hopeless once he came in) to a full count, and then drilling the pitch over the right field wall. I still get goosebumps thinking about. The 1995 UCLA Bruins basketball team beating Arkansas to win the national title. John Elway finally getting his first Super Bowl victory. Kurt Warner hitting Issac Bruce with the game winning 70 yard pass in the Super Bowl, and then Mike Jones stopping Kevin Dyson one yard short to preserve the Rams victory. A small part of me cheered, because I used to be a Rams fan before they skipped town. Troy Percival getting the final outs against the Yankees in the ALDS, the Twins in the ALCS, and the Giants in the World Series. I still can't believe the Angels won the World Series. Jordan's "final game", where he hit the shot over Bryon Russell to win the NBA Finals and close out his career in the most spectacular way one can. I'd never liked Jordan much until that moment, but it was cool to see one of the great ones go out on top. Until he came back that is.

Guest jonstreich Report post Posted February 3, 2003 Just as an aside: I'm kind of surprised nobody's mentioned the #1 moment in baseball history. Okay, so I'll mention it. Bobby F'n Thomson's home run. And the radio call that accompanied it. Also, 1980 US Hockey team beating the Soviets, and then winning the gold. The Ice Bowl. Watching a UW classmate of mine abuse some premeire goal teners this afternoon. 1994 Rose Bowl. 1982 and 2001 World Series, for totally different reasons
Guest DrTom Report post Posted February 3, 2003 ... the Rochester Americans winning the 96 Calder Cup. OMG AHL~! I used to go to Skipjacks games back in the day, before they left Baltimore for Portland or wherever the hell they went. I remember plenty of games against the Rochester Americans. My own moments would be... The Orioles winning the World Series in 1983. Cal Ripken's 2130th and 2131st games, both of which I got to see live. The Ravens winning the Super Bowl. Maryland (with GARY~!) winning the national title in basketball last year. Kirk Gibson's homer. Mark McGwire hits #62. Luis Gonzalez kills the Yankees. Frank Reich leads the Bills back from oblivion against the Oilers.
Guest meanmaisch Report post Posted February 3, 2003 1993 was a great year to be a Phillies fan. The season was unbelievable, as it seemed nothing could go wrong for them. Sure it ended in disappointment, but for the summer and early fall, it was baseball bliss.
