The bidding war for my college services

Recommended Posts

and the first college to send me unsoliticed mail.

Dana College in Blair, Nebraska ( www.dana.edu )

Average class size: 14 kids in a room. No teaching assistants.

Only drawback: It's in Nebraska Husker football territory and I hate the Huskers.

I will lay back to see if anybody else wants to beat Dana.

Any comments on Dana?

You can do better.

Word of advice from a person who recently went through this: some colleges will literally mail you about once a week, wanting you to go there, even after you have already been accepted elsewhere. You want to avoid these schools, even as a safety. Desperation = not attractive.

Of course, the university I'm in now never sent me any mail until I got ahold of them, so life's funny that way.

Same with me. I wasn't considering them much until a representative came to our school and talked.

I can still remember my first unsolicited college mailing: Ithaca.

Also got some from: RIT, Hampshire, Daniel Webster, Hampden-Sydney (all guys), Elizabethtown, Temple, Kettering, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Clarion, York, Ursinus (you got a laptop included in your tuition) and quite a few others. Only six of those are here in PA, and I didn't want to leave the state yet.

It became pretty overwhelming getting three or four of these things a week. Thank goodness for the Internet.

Did you notice that the tuition/fees are always WAY in the back of the pamphlet?

In conclusion: don't base your decision on these things. If they interest you, do some research. The earlier the better.

My brother keeps getting these letters from some Christian college in upstate New York (the name of it escapes me at the moment) all for filling out some ballot to win some laptop at some convention.

It's become quite the joke at my house.

Pretty much nowhere that tries to actively court you is going to be worth it. The best I got was a potential free ride to the University of Alabama.

You'll do better actually seeking out and visiting schools you think you want to go to.

Apparently when I went through the process Washington University in St. Loius wanted me to be the new Dean with everything they sent. You will most likely have a garbage bag full of mail by the end of the process.

And make sure your safety school is somewhere you actually want to go not just somewhere you know where you will get in. The school I am at now was my safety school but with the package they offered me I was glad I wouldn't mind going there, if I had known I would hate this place I would have cost myself about $40,000.
