The press conference to officially announce his new job will be held tomorrow.

 

I don't see great things for the Lions come next season but with Mooch as their head coach, it will be interesting to see how he does next year with his new team.

It isn't about this year, I think. If Mooch is in for the long term, this year is just a rebuilding phase. I could see the Lions as a good team 3 or 4 years down the road, but not next year.

I don't think it will take Parcells that long. He has a much better foundation with Dallas.

 

Dallas has some holes on offense, but hey have a very solid and improving defense. And the offense COULD quickly improve if they get consistent QB play which COULD happen in the first season.

I'll predict 6-10 for Mariucci. Detroit's not as horrible as people may think - well, they're not Cincy-level horrible, anyway - and there is some young talent on there.

 

As for Dallas, I'll be more cautious this year and say they'll be around .500 (last year I had them making the playoffs). The defense is good, the offense will only have to be decent enough - i.e. not commit turnovers - in order for Dallas to be successful.

I'm sure the owner is well aware that his team's lack of talent is the main problem. Just because they fired the coach that was a runner's up prize to hire the coach they originally wanted doesn't mean he's blind to the problems.

 

Besides it not like the owner knowing that they need better talent is going to help anything.

The 49ers he inherited were good, then they sucked for a couple of years, then they were contenders again (at least by way of their record). I'd say that's a pretty decent job on SOMEONE'S part to keep them from going the way that all the other 90s NFL mainstays went.

 

I'm going to be optimistic here based on the Lions' ability to come incredibly close to pulling off several upsets last year (including my Packers) and the swift improvement of Joey Harrington and say 8-8.

 

It's really madness to predict anything during the offseasons these days, but I like to stay positive.

Maybe he's the answer for that franchise, but I really soured on Mooch after his spineless display in the playoff loss to Tampa Bay. If he can work with the talent they have and get some more good players on board, Detroit can have some success. I don't think they'll be an elite team at any time during Mooch's tenure, though, especially if he still hasn't grown a set.

CHICAGO, Feb. 6 — Rev. Jesse Jackson has demanded that the NFL investigate the hiring of Steve Mariucci, saying the Detroit Lions violated the league’s policy requiring teams to consider at least one minority for coaching positions.

 

THE LIONS TARGETED Mariucci as their coach after he was fired by the San Francisco 49ers on January 15 and did not conduct any other in-person interviews.

 

“Steve Mariucci may be a fine coach, and may have emerged as the selection anyway,” Jackson said. “However the selection process is flawed if no minority candidates were given serious consideration as the NFL’s policy dictates.”

 

Under criticism by civil rights attorneys Johnnie Cochran and Cyrus Mehri for their practice of hiring minorities, the NFL implemented a comprehensive program to promote diversity in their coaching and front office ranks based upon recommendations of the NFL Committee on Workplace Diversity.

 

Appointed by Commissioner Paul Tagliabue on October 31, the committee is headed by Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney. Under recommendations of the committee, NFL team owners strongly agreed on the principle that any club seeking to hire a head coach will interview one or more minority applicants for the position.

 

Rooney indicted the Lions on Tuesday, saying their search “fell short of what the committee recommends for all clubs as agreed.”

 

Jackson believes Rooney’s comment on Detroit’s selection process “in itself, is the smoking gun.”

 

Jackson urged for Detroit to be heavily penalized, including fines and disqualification from the upcoming college draft, or else “other teams will violate the hiring process.”

 

There are only three black head coaches in the league with the recent hire of Marvin Lewis by the Cincinnati Bengals.

 

The Lions fired Marty Mornhinweg on December 27 with the intention of hiring Mariucci, who was born and raised in Iron City, Michigan.

 

Meanwhile, the 49ers have gone through a lengthy interview process, interviewing numerous black candidates and two are among the finalists for the job — defensive coordinators Ted Cottrell of the New York Jets and Greg Blache of the Chicago Bears.

 

“There were several black coaches available between the end of the season and when Mariucci was fired,” Jackson said. “If Detroit was earnest, why were they not given an opportunity to interview for the job? Mariucci was the only coach to have an in-person interview. (Lions) General manager Matt Millen never named any other candidate for the job.”

 

Knowing that Mariucci was the likely coach, several black coaches refused to interview with Millen for the job, but Jackson believes that is irrelevant.

 

“Would you interview for a job you already know is going to someone else?” Jackson said. “Would you allow yourself to be used by the Lions so they could get around the NFL policy? These men are not fools and shouldn’t be treated that way.”

Horseshit. The Lions made no secret about wanting Mooch for the job. They don't have to interview anyone if they don't want to. Why can't they just call up the guy they want for the job and say "Hey, we'd like you to be our head coach next season, Steve."?
