What were the worst NFL/college plays of '02-'03?

The ones I can think of off the top of my head include:

 

1) Matt O'Dwyer falling down while attempting a pull block, which caused Corey Dillon to trip over him and caused Cincy to miss a fourth-and-goal.

 

2) The Giants' last second field goal attempt versus the 49ers in the playoffs.

 

3) Mike Rumph, SF cornerback, getting burned every single week.

 

4) Nebraska coach Frank Solich calling a pass on 3rd-and-goal in the final seconds versus Texas, then Jamaal Lord throwing an INT into double coverage.

 

5) The Bills' kickoff coverage unit giving up a TD return in overtime.

 

6) The Colts' playoff game.

Willis MacGahee (or was that Jarrett Payton) throws the ball to Ken Dorsey in the VTech game and it's intercepted and run back for a TD

My beloved Skins blowing the late 3rd quarter lead and a chance to end the horrid streak to the Cowboys on THANKSGIVING. (it was the play that bounced off Kenny Watson's hands and into a Dallas D player for the 3 yard return and touchdown)

 

The play where the Browns lost because their guy took off his helmet.

 

Rich Gannon's superbowl performance, making everyone forget about how HORRIBLE Neil O' Donnel was in Superbowl XXX

 

The Eagles getting smacked at the final game at the Vet.

 

The Officials for well....lots of stuff, but the Giants/49ers call was just inexcusable especially in a PLAYOFF game.

Any one of Kurt Warner's pathetic throws that were intercepted and returned for touchdowns. Warner is the worst QB when it comes to chasing down defenders, as he usually just gives a token "effort." Only Peyton Manning comes close. But my all-time Warner favorite was when they played Tampa on Monday Night and Warren Sapp just clobbered Warner during Derrick Brooks' TD return.

there's always a good shot that an INT can be returned for a TD, especially if it's caught by a sideline and if the guy is fast enough to outrun the offense.

 

Maybe I'm basing that off my Madden2K3 experiences where Jeff Burris or Terrell Buckley could get a pass and run it down the field.

 

I'm sure that Warner is being put out to pasture early, who knows how he will do if he gets healthy next year. I'd say it's still early to put Bulger in as QB over Warner

As a Bengals fan, without a doubt Frerotte's INT comes to mind, no TD, but ran back 80 yards. As a Bengals fan I have to also include the time against Tampa Bay I believe the Bengals got called for a delay of game AFTER they called a timeout!

Mike Rumph gave me plenty of aggravation this past season. I know that he was a rookie, but he was totally lost out there, on seemingly every play. The 49ers secondary can be very suspect and adding him to the mix made it worse.

In Notre Dame's loss to Boston College, their QB was getting sacked, was pretty much on the ground, and then decides to throw a shovel pass right into the stomach of a BC defender. I think the guy ran it back for a TD, but even if he didn't that play ended the game.

 

In Florida's bowl game loss to Michigan, Gators coach Ron Zook decides to run a double reverse pass on a third-and-long late in a close game. Of COURSE it didn't work, if you had to ask.

Turnovers 1-134,974 by Tennessee against Florida.

 

Phillip Fulmer making the decision to punt late in the Fourth Quarter against Georgia when the Tennessee offense had a load of momentum in its favor and was in a short yardage situation, losing by six points, thinking that there would be time to get the ball back.

How about the Kentucky defense giving up a Hail Mary to LSU, where UK had about four guys around the ball and allowed an LSU receiver to tip it to another LSU receiver. It's even worse since the UK bench had already gave their coach the Gatorade shower before the play.

 

And I loved the play as a Browns fan, but the Jaguars giving up a single-coverage Hail Mary to Quincy Morgan and Tim Couch was pretty bad.

 

Also, the Browns' defense dropped TWO interceptions late in the playoff loss to Pittsburgh that probably would have sealed a win.

Eagles performance in the NFC championship game, outside of a couple of players.

 

One of the worst plays I saw (actually got to see it live) was Eagles-Redskins. Redskins fumble, Carlos Emmonds of the Eagles dives on the ball. No Redskin touches him, Shawn Barber drags up Emmonds (who was just laying on the ground waiting to be downed) and escorts him into the endzone.

 

As an Eagle fan, I loved it; but it was a horrible football play by the Skins.

It's not a play, but the hiring of Ron Zook has to be looked back on now as a horrible mistake. Him and the absolute worst punter/placekicker tandem in college football conspired to tank Florida this year.

That was Payton. McGahee was pulled out for that play, when they should have just left him in to get TD #7.

Though I'm a Browns fan first,I've also been an Eagles fan for about 10 years. I always thought it was so cool as a kid to see a scrambling QB. Kosar didn't quite possess this quality.

 

Anywhoo, that play had me laughing all day. It;s as if The Skins were like, "The hell with it."

 

The helmet toss was probably the worst way any team has started a season.

Luckily for Cleveland, a win would've meant going to NYJ instead of Pitt to play in the Wildcard game, so it's all good.

I thought they had ruled he got touched or something like that this year. I know he did it in his rookie year.

Any of the many situations when coaches forgot how to manage the clock with a lead late in the game. RUN RUN RUN the ball. Hello? It's not complicated. Three rushes for zero yards still chews 2:00 off the clock by the time you punt.

 

Steve Mariucci absolutely throwing in the towel at the end of the first half of the 49ers' loss to Tampa Bay. I hope the $25 million he's getting from Detroit will buy him a spine and a set of balls.

 

Bill Callahan not going for it on 4th-and-2 early in the second half of the Super Bowl. Down 20-3, with an offense that's not designed to make big comebacks, you HAVE to make something happen. You HAVE to challenege your players to step up to the plate. You also have the #1 offense in the NFL, so if you can't gain two fucking yards, you really have a problem.

 

Basically, I thought coaching and officiating in the NFL were pretty lousy this year.
