Guest Dmann2000 Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Why did announcers always talk about it taking Greg Valentine 10-15 minutes to get warmed up in a match. Was this some inside joke? A way of saying Valentine was a worker better suited for longer matches. Just a gimmick designed to play him up as a technical wrestler?
Guest tank_abbott Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 The ever dangerous "methodical" wrestler
Guest Anorak Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 If I remember correctly it was usually Gorilla Monsoon who made that comment when Valentine was wrestling. I honestly don't know the answer to the question but I can certainly imagine it being an inside joke as Monsoon did have a sly wit about him.
Guest JHawk Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 I always took it to mean that Valentine had incredible stamina, so it was easier to beat him early in a match as opposed to later. It could have been an inside thing, ala Gorilla's "Terry Garvin School of Self-Defense" line.
Guest Choken One Posted February 5, 2003 Report Posted February 5, 2003 Wasn't he IRONMAN Greg Valentine for a while? Think that has sumthing to do wit it.
Guest MillenniumMan831 Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Valentine never wasted any motion. BTW, what's the story behind the Terry Garvin thing? I know it has something to do with sexual abuse or something, uh I think.
Guest JHawk Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Valentine never wasted any motion. BTW, what's the story behind the Terry Garvin thing? I know it has something to do with sexual abuse or something, uh I think. Supposedly, Terry Garvin would...um..."proposition" male wrestlers in the locker room in his days as a road agent. It was a running joke for years and eventually got Garvin fired when the allegations of sexual abuse became public in the early 90s.
Guest Frankie Williams Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Wasn't he IRONMAN Greg Valentine for a while? Think that has sumthing to do wit it. He was never known as Ironman. What you may be thinking of was his performance in the 1991 Royal Rumble in which I believe he lasted over 40 minutes, but he was outdone by Rick Martel that year.
Guest MillenniumMan831 Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 I remember at Rumble 1992, he got #12ish which prompted this exchange (from memory): Monsoon: If Valentine can last as long as he did last year, he'd be the winner. Heenan: That's right. Monsoon: And Flair would be the loser . . . Heenan: Well NO, uhh I uh . . . Monsoon: And a lot of other guys would be losers. Heenan: Well, that's not gonna happen. Valentine was dumped about 5 minutes later by Repo Man.
Guest Choken One Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Yeah that was mistake there...If they had him come out after Piper...Then he could last to the final Six in Martel's spot...They could've really added more drama and heenanisms.
Guest Drury37 Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Man the WWF Royal Rumble 1992 Royal Rumble match was just unbeleivable the rest of the show was nothing exciting except Piper winning the WWF Interecontinental Title was awesome,I saw once in a WWF Steel Cage Magazine that Piper once beat Flair for the WWF Title in a steel cage match but lost the WWF Title back to Flair the next night, does anyone know about this because I wonder if it is true. Thanks.
Guest bob_barron Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Have you ever heard of punctuation??? No- Piper never beat Flair for the WWF Title in a steel cage match.
Guest Grenouille Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 I saw once in a WWF Steel Cage Magazine that Piper once beat Flair for the WWF Title in a steel cage match but lost the WWF Title back to Flair the next night, does anyone know about this because I wonder if it is true. Thanks. I remember seeing the picture with Piper holding the World & IC belts. if anything it was just some sort of Dusty finish that happened at that house show. If I had to bet I would guess the finish probably had Piper go through the door while Flair climbed out, with the audience thinking Piper was first, but the ref siding with Flair.
cawthon777 Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 Those cage matches were non-title. I think there might have been one that actually was for the title - but Flair won that.
Guest Choken One Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 It was non title but Piper still held both belts up for a pop...same thing you see all the time...when the face beats down the heel and holds the belt on the ropes as the show goes to black...
Guest Drury37 Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 Oh alright,I just remember seeing the picture, sorry about my lack of grammar when I am posting here.I know how to write but I did not think if I was posting on this board I had to use perfect puncuation. Thanks.
