Debate/Forensics

Recommended Posts

I'm currently doing Debate, in my second year of doing it in HS. I did cross-examination, but I'm doing Lincoln/Douglas after I lost 13 straight rounds of CX, although to be honest, I ended that said streak on a bye. So far in two shots at L/D, I've gone 3-5, which is good, if I didn't get three more byes. Which means, I haven't won an actual round since October. Ack..

I also do Foreign Extemperanous speaking, which I don't place high in most of the time, due to factors (like bad questions to answer, lack of citing evidence, stuff like that). I did get to compare Kim jung-il to a crazy guy who sat on the front porch with a shotgun, maybe I should have refrained from using it at a tournament out in the middle of nowhere in Missouri, I might have hit too close to home there.

Since I met the class requirement of two tournaments in the semester (one that required an overnight stay at a hotel), I can lay back and not go to any more tournaments, and I can plan and recoup for next year. Although I figure I'll have to do something with the new L/D res. which involves letter of the law and spirit of the law.

I hope the CX Oceans resolution doesn't suck so much, maybe I can find some poor soul and do something.

Does anybody else do debate, or has ever done debate, or anything?

just asking

My services were heavily courted for the Debate team in senior year. It was bascially because I was known around campus for my golden voice and biting wit, which didn't account for my apathy towards anything that I'd have to research and discuss. The Young Democrats tried to recruit me for a pre-election debate on their behalf and everything. I'm really an excellent public speaker, but debate required far too much research and the debates themselves were too structured. I couldn't get into it. If they'd had school-sanctioned comedy shoot-outs, I'd have gotten a free ride through college. But alas...

I'm in a literary and debating society at college, though I never really dabbled in forensics in high school.

The last debate I fielded, arguing on the gov side: "You are a pimp. Your ho has been stealing money from you, lying to you about how much she's been taking each night. Resolved: kill dat bitch."

Unfortunately, the opposition came back with a counter-case: "Instead of killing the bitch, just cut the bitch's legs off." They, sadly, carried the day.

I offered my services to the debate team at my old high school but I was later told that I intimidated the other debators too much for a fear that I might leap over the table and strangle them.

I was infamous at my school for deconstructing assholes rather than beat the holy Hell out of them (which happened more times than I would have liked) but when I got going, no one could stop me.

Debate is a fun thing to do and I recommend it to anyone who likes to argue and verbally beat the shit out of other people.
