Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted February 5, 2003 The Power of the Archbishop of New York has not decreased, but increased. The man who controls the power of Cardinal Spellman, for "The Powerhouse" in New York, St. Patrick's Cathedral(across the street from Rockefeller Center), and continues to supress the truth about the assasination of John F. Kennedy by virtue of his oath as a Cardinal, is the Arch-Conspiritor, and traitor to the American people and master of the infamous, Jesuit trained agitator, high-level Freemason and CFR member, former President Bill Clinton, and now master of Skull and Bones member, President George W. Bush, whose father, former President George H. Bush is also a high-level Freemason and a former director of the CFR and the CIA, as well as a participant in the Kennedy assasination. Remembering that he is the master of Pope John Paul II, Archbishop Edward Cardinal Egan of New York, and President George W. Bush(of the Bush crime family, descending back to England's House of Stewart), as well as the petty miliatary dictators of Communist Russia and China, we would be remiss not to consider the words of Napoleon in his memoirs, after he had been betrayed into the hands of his captors by his Jesuit masters, while imprisoned on the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic: "The Jesuits are a miliatary organization, not a religious order. Their chief is the general of an army, not the mere father abbot of a monastary. And the aim of this organization is POWER. Power in it's most despotic exercise. Absolute power, universal power, power to control the world by volition of a single man... The general of the Jesuits insists of being master, sovereign, over the sovereign. Whatever the Jesuits are admitted they will be masters, cost what it may... Every act, every crime, however atrocious, if a meritorious work, if committed for the interest of the Society of Jesuits, or by order of the general." Cardinal Egan, a committed supporter of the infallible pope's temporal power and the Jesuit General's evil Council of Trent, will continue the great Jesuit coverup, even as his predecessors, Cardinals Spellman, Cooke and O'Connor. This power is carried out through New York's Council on Foreign Relations, as both former Presidential candidates, George W. Bush and Albert Gore, are under it's control. Both candidates were also present(along with former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary), during Cardinal O'Connor's funeral, which was overseen by the Knights of Malta, in St, Patrick's Cathedral, despite none of the four of them being Catholic. Of this Jesuit power over statesman through the pope and his hierarchy, M.F. Cusack(no relation to John and Joan) wrote in her 1896 book The Black Pope, on page 106: "It is here that the tremendous power of the Church makes itself felt. It is through this 'direction' that statesmen are compelled to act, not for the benefit of the country to which they belong, but for the benefit of the Church, which controls them. It is here that matters of the most secret nature are discussed and decided. It is here that the alliances... are arranged, and political treatiest are agreed on." Hopefully, the Jesuit order, in control of the Archbishop, with his army of Vatican Assasins, will be brought to justice for the brutal muder of President Kennedy, and for continuing the Great Jesuit Cover-Up of his death. This also includes the murder of John F. Kennedy Jr., along with his wife, Carolyn Bessete, and her sister Lauren. And why were they murdered? According to the National Examiner, John had recently launched an all out investigation to discover his father's real killers. It is one of the Jesuits most marked characteristics to never forgive an injury, and to punish the remotest descendents for whatever harm their ancestors may have caused. The same was done to Princess Diana, for the Jesuits would never allow her Moslem offspring to become heir to the throne of England, which must be occupied by a monarch who is loyal to the Order of the Jesuits infallible pope, a tradition which has been in effect from King George III, through to the present Queen Elizabeth II. And, because of her union with the Arab prince Dodi Fayed(the "Moslem Dog" or "Moslem wog" as those dorks in England would call him), Princess Di had to die, and the Jesuits had her buried out of the public view in Althrop Park in Northhamptonshire, on a small island in the middle of a pond, which had previousely only been used for the burial of pets dogs. Yes, the Jesuits buried Diana in a pet cemetary, although they ensured that she would not come back to life and be evil. So now that we are privy to this information, what are we to do? I think the answer is clear... murder the church. Keep in mind that I am not, in any way, a conspiritist, and provide this information for novelty purposes only, so it is absolutely imperative that the church be destroyed. You cannot fight the Jesuits, my friend, they're too powerful, you cannot go to the authorities, because they are the authorities, the iron fist reich of the vatican can only be toppled from the ground up. That's what Jesus would want you to do. He doesn't want his name being bastardized by these miliatary thugs, Jesus says destroy the evil church. That's what Satan would want you to do. He doesn't want the world to be the pawn of the empire built in the name of his greatest foe. Do you want to be controlled by the Holy Roman Empire, or do you want to make your own decisions? By the way, the Church killed Bobby Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Tupac Shakur, and Kurt Cobain too, and I'll get around to supporting that sometime. And Hitler and Marx worked for them. They have succesfully placed every authoritarian organization and world leader in their pocket, but they have forgotten those who hold the true power: the people. So get on your knees and pray, sacrifice a cat, do whatever it is you do... and then rise up, throw off the chains or your oppressors, and take back what is yours by right, by whatever means neccesary. And the time has come to use brute force, the negotiationing is over, we have spoken and they will not listen. The pen has failed, we must take up the sword. Destroy the Church. Suck on that, bitch. Guest The Amazing Rando Report post Posted February 5, 2003 Written last summer...but thought i'd post it: ------------ No one ever suspects the lonely of having a life. They mock them and shower them with disgust and torment. Why can’t people look to the lonely as a source of new friendship, and not a source of torture and hate? They walk past, with their heads held high, barely giving a word to the soul who sits in his shadow, searching for the light. And the light never comes… And as the soul tries his best to find it, the light stays out of its reach, forever evading the soft touch of joy that can be brought to the lonely. It is a sorry state…that of loneliness. As much as a lonely soul wishes to be free and surrounded by that love, that soul becomes shied away from love, fearing rejection and doubt from the world. Then one day, all becomes clear. Those moments when you feel your most depressed…are just simply moments that will go away with time, and so they light will find its way into the darkest caverns of the soul… And the light never leaves…

Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2003 Ratsmilk, can you beat GENE RAY? He says.. Ignorance of Time Cube dooms humans, inflicting their own created "word hell". Educators are actually "evil word gods", teaching commercial plunder of Nature. The damn bastards suppress free speech, by denying Time Cube debate discussion. Students MUST DEMAND free speech - for the greatest of all human discoveries. ****************************************** Read physics of Santa Claus . Explain the physics of a god. Belief has no inherent value, but worship of such nonvalue as a god, equates to nonacceptance of Cubic knowledge - as demonstrated by ineffable Truth and the Highest Order of Wisdom. I can talk with a human for hours about the Time Cube and they will agree with every claim I make. But at the end of the conversation, they remark that they believe in the nonvalue belief god and cannot accept Cubic Creation, regardless of all the ineffable Truth and Wisdom it proves. A Belief Matrix pulls a 1 day world over your eyes, while the real Cubic World has 4 simultaneous days in 1 Earth rotation. Educators own your mind and fills it with garbage, that will soon destroy humanity. ****************************************************** You are a slave - to academic induced inculcated belief - an insidious entity, an evil which corrupts human mental ability to accept creation knowledge, as demonstrated in Cubicism. ******************************************* Did you see the movie Matrix? Actually the induced night "dream world" is synonymous with the academic religious induced daytime "word world" enslavement of humans. Word has no inherent value, as it was invented as a counterfeit and fictitious value to represent natural values in commerce. Unfortunately, human values have declined to fictitious word values. Unknowingly, you are living in a "Word World", as in a fictitious life in a counterfeit nation - which you could consider Matrix induced "Dream World". Can you distinguish the academic induced "Word World" from the natural "Real World"? Beware of the change when your brain is free from induced"Word World" enslavement - for you could find that the natural "Real World" has been destroyed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hallelujah, even a larger Time Cube event at MIT on July 26, and open to the whole World. MIT has the guts to explore, and is birthplace of the UCS. UCS should research Time Cube. "Why not the Time Cube?" The only reason is educated stupidity. We plan to entice the UCS or Union of Concerned Scientists to participate and cast the Time Cube, religion and academia into a cauldron of debate - so Truth will surface. I offer UCS $10,000. to disprove Time Cube. UCS refusal to investigate, indicts them evil. There can be no time limit set on this event until the fight has ended and dust settled. Never has an event has been so important to future of children, nature and humanity. The event will be held in a 1250 seat facility and a small entrance fee will be required to cover cost for police, permits and etc.. You will be notified when on MIT calendar. Overflow crowd is expected so reservations may be in order, so contact Rhett at MIT, [email protected], or [email protected] for Gene Ray to make your interest known. ********************************************* I have demonstrated absolute unrefutable proof of 4 simultaneous 24 hour days with in a single rotation of Earth. No other man or god can claim such Truth manifestation. The academic brainwashed mind is corrupt and can't comprehend Cubic magnificence. ************************************ University of Michigan is a racist and anti-white institution - offering 20 points for registration, if you are not white. It is already evil in that they suppress student free speech for discussing and debating Nature's Harmonic Time Cube Principle. Integration equates unnatural racial slop. Does black mentality need the 20 points to equate the mentality of the white race, or is it an evil ploy to subdue the white race? What anti-white force is behind this evil? I will not receive one educator reaction, as their power is in ignoring ineffable Truth. How can such an evil school exist in USA. ********************************************************* Evil Ass Educators Suppress Time Cube, and dumb ass students condone such evil. Cubeless institutions are spreaders of evil, and students lack mentality to challenge it. ************************************************ I bestow upon myself the "Doctorate of Cubicism", for educators are ignorant of Nature's Harmonic Time Cube Principle and cannot bestow the prestigious honor of wisdom upon the wisest human ever. Dr. Gene Ray ************************************************************ Force teachers to debate Time Cube site. Word teachers are the most evil humans. Religious academia represses the human mind of the Cubic Truth - not utterable. Educators and teachers, ignorant of the Time Cube Principle, are evil liars and unfit to live in Earth's Garden of Eden. The bastards refuse to challenge this site, repressing Time Cube free speech rights. Students must force Time Cube debates & Make sure every teacher sees this web site. ******************************** Time Cube proves a 1 face god impossible, due to 4 corner face metamorphic human - baby, child, parent and grandparent faces. ********************************** Religious education is mindless declaration of ignorance, still maintained from its ancient origin by dumb and evil humans. ***************************************** If you believe the academic erroneous word god, you will die stupid and evil - for you have not the mental freedom to comprehend Nature's Higher Order Wisdom of the Harmonic Simultaneous 4-Day Time Cube Creation Principle within 1Earth Rotation. Until word is cornered, educators are liars. by Gene Ray, the wisest human ******************************************* Any dumb ass should know that a prime meridian does not just pass through the Greenwich point, but it also passes as a great circle through both poles, crossing the equator at 2 opposite points, dividing Earth into 2 halves of light and darkness, with each its own 24 hour rotation - in a single rotation of Earth. You should know that harmonic symmetry demands a second great circle meridian to create sunup and sundown corner quadrants? There are 4 simultaneous 24 hour days within a single rotation of the Earth. You may be too damn evil to accept it. ************************************** Since I have informed you of Nature's Harmonic Time Cube 4-Day Creation Principle, your stupidity is no longer the issue. For now, the issue is just how evil you are for ignoring Life's Highest Order, and just how long the Time Cube will allow you to plunder Earth before inflicting hell upon you. ******************************* Your father was a fish. You evolved from an egg laid in water, fertilized by a sperm fish swimming upstream - just as salmon swim up stream to fertilize female egg laid in the water. Maybe, you should worship a fish god. *************************************** There is nothing so dumb, stupid and evil as a cubeless educator, except for their evil dumb stupid ass students. Evil educators teach dumb students how to profit from plunder of Earth and to create deadly nuclear waste that will poison the children's water and destroy humanity. Both educator and stupid student must be condemned. Tis Time to ban any educator who does not teach Cubicism above cubelessness. To save humanity from extinction, like prior civilizations perished, youth must redirect selfteachers, or shackle them. Stupid Educators know of the Truth I speak and know that it will indict them as the most evil bastards on the Earth. Only a dumb student can be educated - as in brainwashed and indoctrinated. Time Cube debate denial is educator evil. It is not immoral for students to dispise educators who ignore Nature's Harmonic Time Cube or suppress free speech rights to debate Time Cube Creation Principle. Ignorance of Time Cube is Greatest Evil. ..................................................... Subject: TIME CUBE IS PROVEN BY TEACHER Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2002 17:54:04 EST From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Dear Mr. Ray- For a year now I have studied your Time Cube truths but have not been able to convince others of its reality (dumbasses). My mother is a teacher, and she said it was "nutty" and "stupid." But guess what- I cornered her, literally, in the living room one evening, and forced her to admit it. IN ORDER TO GET HER TEACHING CERTIFICATE, SHE HAD TO SIGN AN AFFIDAVIT STATING THAT SHE WOULD UPHOLD THE GREENWICH MYTH UNTIL DEATH. I shit you not. It has been revealed. American teachers are sworn to fight against the truth of Time Cube.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted February 5, 2003 The media is one of the most influential things in society today. It effects our viewpoint and it only shows us what they want us to see us and hear. The media seems to most effect the political system, especially in America. Instead of discussing the issues that matter to their constituents it seems like all politicians care about is looking good on television, having a snappy campaign slogan and raising money. Lots of money. Two films that were released in the span of six months of each other, Wag the Dog and Bulworth both parody to a great degree the relationship between the media, society and politics. Wag the Dog portrays the media in a very negative light while also parodying previous political figures. In the film, the unseen President of the United States has been involved in a sex scandal involving an underage girl that could kill his administration, especially with a rival candidate, Senator John Neal (Craig T. Nelson) breathing down his neck. He decides to call in a spin doctor Conrad Brean (Robert DeNiro) who hopefully will get this whole scandal off the front page by creating a war with Albania. Albania is picked because according to Roger Ebert’s review of the film: Nobody is sure where it is, nobody cares, and you can't get any news out of it. Nobody can even think of any Albanians except--maybe the Belushi brothers? Going to war with a small country like Albania is a direct spoof of the United States involvement in such countries as Grenada and Panama. In the movie, once Albania is painted as the evil villains, the American people immediately rally around the government and when there is a report of a POW in Albania named Willie Shoeman, Americans hang shoes from trees to show their support for him to be brought home. The fact that Willie Shoeman doesn’t actually exist and the man who portrays him is a convicted psychotic rapist is never actually revealed to the public. While this is all played for laughs it does have some truth to it. In the Oscar winning documentary The Panama Deception, the events that are portrayed for parody and laughter are shown as having some truth to them. The documentary is about the American involvement in Panama in1989 where they ousted dictator Manuel Noriega. Just like in Wag the Dog, the documentary shows a newscaster portraying Noriega as the man ‘Americans love to hate’ just like in Wag. In the documentary the American media is showing focusing solely on the American casualties of the involvement in a very xenophobic like view. In Wag, the media’s involvement of “the war” shows them only showing the American side of things and only focuses on the American casualties. Granted, there weren’t any Albanian casualties to report but no one in the film is portrayed as even questioning anything about the actual war at all. In one part of Wag the Dog, they film a young girl fleeing her bombed out village and put it on the news as a way of spoofing an incident around the time of the Persian Gulf War when American news broadcasts broadcasted a video featuring Iraqis raiding a Kuwaiti hospital and stealing the babies inside. This got many people supporting the Persian Gulf War. Later in an investigation by CBC it was revealed the whole thing was filmed by the US government, just like what happened in Wag the Dog. The media is seen as hapless sheep throughout the whole ordeal as they don’t seem to question anything at all and just report what the US Government tells them. While this in fact maybe a parody it could just be the director telling the truth. In Roger Ebert’s review of Wag the Dog he writes: So, why did we invade Grenada? A terrorist bomb killed all those Marines in Beirut, the White House was taking flak, and suddenly our Marines were landing on a Caribbean island few people had heard of, everybody was tying yellow ribbons 'round old oak trees, and Clint Eastwood was making the movie. The Grenadan invasion, I have read, produced more decorations than combatants. By the time it was over, Ronald Reagan's presidency had proven the republic could still flex its muscle--we could take out a Caribbean Marxist regime at will, Cuba notwithstanding. Barry Levinson's ``Wag the Dog'' cites Grenada as an example of how easy it is to whip up patriotic frenzy, and how dubious the motives sometimes are. The movie is a satire that contains just enough realistic ballast to be teasingly plausible; Bulworth also spoofs the media but in a different way. Bulworth is a movie about Senator Bulworth, who is depressed and going through a mid-life crisis. He decides to hire a hitman who will end his life and takes out a ten million dollar life insurance policy for his daughter . Realising that since he is going to die, he can do whatever he wants- he decides to start doing something wacky for a politician and speak the truth. While Wag the Dog is more about the manipulation of the public, Beatty’s film attacks the political process and both political parties. When Senator Bulworth starts to speak his mind he becomes a media sensation. The irony in Bulworth, is that he becomes a sensation in the media for being a politician that actually tells the truth and points out the problems in society. The media doesn’t seem to care too much about Bulworth until he starts speaking the truth about the way things really are. Politics plays a big role in Wag the Dog. In the film our political leaders are shown as being very corrupt and only caring about making money for themselves. In the film a rival politician is said to have bought off the CIA making the dramatization of the war on Albania much harder. Instead of focusing on the illegalities of the president’s conduct his staff is just worried that it probably will not help his approval rating or him getting re-elected. The election process is also portrayed as a joke as they talk about the making of the president, in how a president isn’t elected because he is qualified for the job, he is elected because he has the best image on TV and he looks like the most appealing candidate to voters. In Wag the Dog, there is more of the backwardsness of American politics. In the movie at the end the main characters are able to get back to Washington with the help of a Hispanic man driving a tractor. The president’s aide Winifred Ames (Anne Heche) who over the course of the movie has tried to cover up the president’s affair with an underage girl and manipulated the public into thinking there was a conflict in Albania is suddenly upset that they may’ve been helped out by an illegal immigrant so to continue the sham even more, the tractor driver takes his oath of citizenship. In Spanish. In Bulworth, the political process is lampooned to a great degree. Warren Beatty, like a typical democrat, goes to a fundraiser of a bunch of Hollywood types and instead of accepting the money like he usually would, he goes off on a rant on how they put out poor quality movies. He goes to an African American church and spouts off one of the most memorable quotes of the movie: Isn't that OBVIOUS? You got half your kids are out of work and the other half are in jail. Do you see ANY Democrat doing anything about it? Certainly not me! So what're you gonna do, vote Republican? Come on! Come on, you're not gonna vote Republican! Let's call a spade a spade! [Loud, angry booing] I mean -- come on! You can have a Billion Man March! If you don't put down that malt liquor and chicken wings, and get behind someone other than a running back who stabs his wife, you're NEVER gonna get rid of somebody like me! Beatty, who wrote and directed the film, with that monologue sounds like he trying to reach out to politicians who promise things to the African American community, yet once they get elected turn their backs on and concentrate on the big corporations that give them money. While Beatty’s film is played as a comedy, in a way it’s him trying to tell politicians and other people in power that constituents are tired of the same old campaign promises, the lame campaign slogans and all of the scandals they get themselves into. Through this film Beatty is trying to mould a different politician and while politicians for the most part still act the same his message may have gotten some attention. The November election that year saw Jessie Ventura, a former a professional wrestler who ran an honest campaign and spoke his mind freely, pull of a huge upset and become the governor of Minnesota, a state not known for his liberalism. In James Bernadelli’s review of the film he notes that Bulworth could be Beatty’s way of attacking the leaning conservative Democrat. While the film didn’t change the Democratic party, in the last election in 2002 it looked like the independents were gaining some ground, which may’ve been what Beatty may’ve wanted. Wag the Dog is very critical of the American society in the movie. The American people are portrayed as mindless sheep who believe anything the government tells them to believe. To make sure the American people are patriotic and ready for a war with Albania, they hire a young actress and go to a soundstage where they film her running away from a bombed out village holding a Tostitos bag which when it airs on the news magically becomes a cat. Here they are spoofing incidents in Vietnam where photos and footage aired of young Vietnamese children running from bombed and burned out villages to try and get sceptical Americans to support the conflict over there. The film portrays Americans as only responding to heart warming images and stories in order to gain support for a war. The film also spoofs the American obsession of commercialisation of war or horrific events like after September 11th or World War II. When Conrad decides to record a song to help Americans support the war effort and pretend it was recorded in the 30s, the American people immediately fall in line and it becomes a big hit. The film also touches upon another issue in America, an issue of voter apathy. None of the main characters in the film seem to vote and they all give petty, absurd reasons why they choose not to vote. Fad King (Denis Leary) claims he once voted for a baseball player to start an All Star Game and they didn’t get picked. Liz Butsky (Andrea Martin) gets claustrophobic in the voting booth. The film is playing on all the absurdities of the way many Americans act from the way they blindly support a war they know nothing on and their voter apathy. Bulworth, doesn’t deal with American society as a whole but deals with more black and white relations. As a senator, Bulworth is rich and lives on the big side of town and never really sees or cares what the other side is like. During his transformation, he starts to realise that not everything is great. Bulworth finally faces reality in the film and its him like a ton of bricks. He meets kids who are drug dealers because they are too young to be put in jail. He sees people who all know someone whose been shot and he enters into a world of sex, violence, and marijuana. But since Bulworth has become so upset with his everyday life, this whole new world entices him. He begins to tell African Americans why they are looked down upon while at the same time speaking up for them. He makes comments on their use of the word ‘nigger’ and how they never really get involved in politics which is the same reason why politicians don’t care about them. Bulworth soon embraces the hip-hop life and culture and begins to dress and talk like the stereotypical African American. Another quote in the movie sees Bulworth saying: All we need is a voluntary, free-spirited, open-ended program of procreative racial deconstruction. Everybody just gotta keep f---in' everybody 'til they're all the same color. Bulworth seems disgusted by the racism that politicians show to African Americans and seems to start looking for changes to his society, however out there they maybe. Bulworth and Wag the Dog both have a lot to say about politics, society and the media. Both films are sharply critical of all three mediums and use parody as their way of criticism. While the films didn’t affect too much change in America they did cause many people to possibly change their way of thought.

Guest treble charged Report post Posted February 5, 2003 BS at its finest: In his 1941 book Escape From Freedom, Erich Fromm describes how man attempts to free himself from the boundaries of society, yet how that is not necessarily what man wants, as freedom is perhaps not all it is cracked up to be. Hence, as Fromm states in his title, man is attempting to escape from freedom, which is rather odd, as freedom is something that one always thinks man desires. From the time we are old enough to walk, we always want to be left alone by our parents. However, many children remain at home well into their teenage years, and, in some cases, even into young adulthood. Rather than leave their parents’ home and become ‘free’, they choose to give up a portion of their freedom, as they are comfortable in their surroundings. This, Fromm says, is what happens on a large scale globally. People choose not to fight for complete freedom, as they are more comfortable letting other people make their decisions for them. This is why the Nazis gained power in Germany between the World Wars, Fromm believes. People there were more comfortable having Hitler and his party make the tough decisions for them. Fromm uses the child analogy early on in his book, saying, “In the life history of an individual we find the same process. A child is born when it is no longer one with it’s mother and becomes a biological entity separate from her., Yet, while this biological separation is the beginning of individual human existence, the child remains functionally one with its mother for a considerable period.” 1 Here, Fromm describes how even though an infant is technically free from its mother’s biological dependence, it is still dependent on her for other things, even though the infant can now breathe on its own, it is still dependent on its mother (or father, for that matter) to feed, bathe, and clothe it, as well as other mundane tasks that older humans are able to perform for themselves. This is similar to human’s attempting to free themselves from society. While they can perhaps work for themselves in order to earn money, they are still dependent on society to ‘protect’ them (perhaps through military power), much in the same way that an infant relies on his or her mother and/or father to protect them (by feeding, bathing, clothing, etc. them). This is a good analogy used by Fromm, as it is true. Despite the ‘freedom’ gained by an infant the moment it leaves its mother’s womb and is born, for the next six or seven years of its life, it is completely dependent on his or her parents for basically everything. It is usually not until they are well into their adult years that they no longer rely on their parents for anything, yet, sometimes, not even that is the case. Most parents are willing to help their adult children make ends meet if necessary, and, when the parents die, there is usually an inheritance (which usually entails a rather large sum of money) that is given to their children, which helps out even more. So, even though the children have gained complete independence from their parents, they are still relying on them in some cases to help ease their financial burden. Fromm then goes on to discuss the Middle Ages, and how they affect his argument. He says, “A person was identical with his role in society; he was a peasant, an artisan, a knight, and not an individual who happened to have this or that occupation. The social order was conceived as a natural order, and being a definite part of it gave a feeling of security and of belonging.”2 This shows that what Fromm believes has been true for centuries: People feel comfortable and secure in a setting where they feel protected. They do not necessarily want to be ‘free’, when they can live a full and fruitful life under the leadership of someone else who they feel is more qualified to make big and important decisions. This point is very true, I feel, as if it were not the case, then everyone and their mother would run for political office of some sort, in order to gain a position of power over their peers. However, this is not really the case, and people vote in elections for who they feel is the smartest (in most cases) and best-suited to leader their town, province, state, or country. With the majority of people having chosen this person to lead them and make the tough decisions affecting them, most people feel comfortable just sitting back and watching all this take place from afar, usually through their television screen or newspapers. A certain amount of people’s freedoms are placed in the hands of the few people who are chosen to govern our society, and people don’t have a problem with this. You would think that people would like to make decisions such as their children’s futures for themselves, but they place all of those decisions into the hands of whomever they’ve elected, regardless of whether he (or she) is the right man (or woman) for the job. Later on, Fromm discusses how capitalism affected people’s personalities in the same way as they were affected previously, in the reformation. “By the doctrines of Protestantism, man was psychologically prepared for the role he was to play under the modern industrial system. This system, its practice, and the spirit which grew out of it, reaching every aspect of life, molded the whole personality of man and accentuated the contradictions which we have discussed in the previous chapter: it developed the individual - and made him more helpless; it increased freedom - and created dependencies of a new kind.”3 This discusses how man relies on not just politicians, but religion and beliefs to ‘protect’ him. We are shaped by what we believe, and usually, we feel that we can use that to protect ourselves from danger. Whenever anyone feels unsafe or scared, they usually say a prayer to God, asking for Him to look over us in our time of need. He offers people a sense of security, so this shows how people offer Him some of the freedoms which they could have otherwise. People are dependent on God (or whoever it is that they worship, depending on their religion) for comfort when times are tough for them. This is another way in which people sacrifice a part of their freedoms in order for a measure of comfort that is provided by believing in a higher power of sorts. Next, Fromm details the ‘Mechanisms of Escape’ (as he describes them) by saying how humans use different ‘mechanisms’ in order to escape from their freedoms. There are three different mechanisms (Authoritarianism, Destructiveness, Automaton Conformity). Authoritarianism is when someone gives up their independence to align themselves with someone who possesses an attribute that that person is lacking. Destructiveness is when a person destroys something that symbolizes their freedom, and it helps them to escape that freedom by destroying said object. Finally, automaton conformity is when a person ceases to be themself4. By doing this, he becomes exactly what society dictates he be, and becomes just like everyone else, and is no longer an individual. In closing, Fromm makes some good arguments as to why people attempt to escape the freedom that they are granted in this life, and many of them are very true. The analogy concerning children being born and depending on their mothers and father for survival is very apt, as it describes perfectly what humans are like when it comes to trying to become independent. We want to make our own decisions, but not anything that would be too difficult to do. It is also interesting how this has gone on for centuries, and perhaps millenniums before that, and it is not just a new post world wars phenomenon. Ever since the Middle Ages, and likely even before that, people have wanted to be under the rule of someone who will make difficult decisions for them, in order to not have to worry about making them themselves. Guest bob_barron Report post Posted February 5, 2003 Facing a $78 million loss, the Toronto Transit Commission may have to once again raise prices. This possible price increase has outraged students at Ryerson University who are tired of paying through the roof for service. In a recent article in the Toronto Star, Councillor Betty Disero (Ward 17, Davenport) went into detail about the price increases. Bulk tickets would go from $1.80 to $1.90, meaning the cost of ten tokens will increase by one dollar. Monthly passes are going up by around five dollars and a yearly pass will be increasing by about fifty dollars. This is especially hard for students who commute because unlike New York, Boston and Ottawa, the TTC offers no special discounts for students. Response from commuters who commute to Ryerson has thus far been negative. Carolyn Lecorre, a fourth year RTA student, says the price was way too high back in 1999, which is why she bikes to school. Part of the problem, she says, is the lack of funding Toronto gets from the government. According to Lecorre, Ottawa gets a lot of funding and only charges $49.75 a month for student passes and $60.50 a month for adult passes. Conversely, in Toronto the same pass will cost you $93.25. She thinks the abundance of cars has probably led to some of the TTC’s recent troubles. “I don’t know why people have SUVs in such a big city.” Lecorre thinks the price is out of control, and combined with rising tuition costs she says, “I just can’t afford it.” Bob Barron TTC A Copy Kayla Reich and Jessica Spring are two first year social work students who are starting to feel the effects of commuting everyday. They commute from Thomhill, Ontario using tokens and their ride takes them about forty minutes each day. The girls think the price is too high already and Reich says a price hike would be “ridiculous” since the TTC just recently raised the prices in April. The girls say that compared to the cost of living in residence at Ryerson- commuting is still the way to go, despite the possible price hike. Keith Crosley is a fourth year RTA student who has been commuting for three years. Crosley says that in the three years he has been commuting the cost of riding the subway has gone up from $1.50 to $2.25, a rise of fifty percent. Unlike other students, Crosley finds the current cost of riding a subway reasonable but thinks they should only raise the price if they upgrade the service. He also thinks a price increase could hurt the TTC. He believes people who have a choice of driving or using public transportation may opt to drive if the price of public transportation gets too expensive. This is why Crosley proposes charging a luxury tax for obtaining a drivers license and that the price of gas be increased. He thinks this may get more people back on the buses, street cars and subways. Crosley, like others, also thinks the federal government needs to give more money to the TTC, so the prices do not become too out of control. When asked about living in residence instead of commuting, Crosley like Reich and Spring believes he would rather commute. “You have to balance the convenience and the price,” he says. Bob Barron TTC B Copy Crosley has found an alternative to the TTC- the Go Train. A commuter from Mississauga, Ontario, his ride is about an hour long and a monthly pass only costs him $74- which he finds to be affordable and is much cheaper then a monthly pass from the TTC. Go Train is a publicly funded transit service that according to their website serves a population of five million and runs from downtown Toronto to Hamilton in the west and serves other cities in Ontario such as Orangeville, Guelph and Osawha among others. Go Transit was the first and only interregional public transit system in Ontario and was established to link Toronto with the surrounding regions in the greater Toronto area. The Go Train has seven transit lines and 52 stations. Despite his usage of Go Transit, Crosley has said he has had nothing but positive experiences with TTC and thinks it’s some of the best public transportation he has ever seen. With the possible price increases of the TTC, students are left with very little alternatives. Most agree that the federal government needs to step in and provide more funding before the TTC goes through with what could be a possibly damaging fair hike. -30-
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted February 5, 2003 Bob Barron Teacher Lead Copy After what she called a very difficult negotiation process, Shelley Robertson, the president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association announced that a deal that had been struck between the members of the local 410 union and the board trustees. The deal, which calls for a 5 per cent pay increase over the next two years was ratified by the teachers today by a vote of 122-81. The pay increase is retroactive to July 1st, when the contract expired. Robertson said she was never afraid the teachers would vote no on the deal. At the press conference, which was held at the downtown Holiday Inn in the McKenzie room, Robertson went over the negotiation process. The negotiations began in March and all other matters were quickly settled until the issue of salary remained. The teachers wanted a 7 per cent increase while the union, which was head by Chris Binkley, offered 3 per cent. The pay increase means that a teacher with 5 years experience will earn $46,200. An entry level teacher will now make $30,000. She called Binkley a tough negotiator but said “he was only doing his job.” “We got as good a contract as we could get,” Robertson said. She conceded that the state of the economic made it almost impossible to get the 7 per cent pay increase they asked for. She thinks citizens will be thrilled that schools will remain open and there will not be a strike- not that it was ever brought up Robertson said. Robertson also said that a lockout was not a threat either. Robertson is a teacher of English for grades 10-11 at Our Lady Peace High School. This was her second time negotiating a deal- the first time she got teachers a 6 per cent pay increase.

Guest bob_barron Report post Posted February 5, 2003 Western Eyes, a documentary by Ann Shin, looks at stereotypes, biases and discrimination that two women go through that cause them to explore plastic surgery to change the shape of their eyes. The documentary was extremely effective in showing complex issues such as race and gender and the filmmaker’s ideological position greatly showed with the form and content of the documentary. Western Eyes also tries greatly and somewhat succeeds at forming an intellectual and emotional bond with the view with portrayal of the two women. Western Eyes, like all classic documentaries, captures the viewer by being transformative and being educative at the same time. Western Eyes is very much about the complex issue of “race and gender”. Of the two female characters, one of them wants to change the shape of her eyes because of bias and the stereotyping of her race in her childhood, along with other insecurities she endured growing up. Bias refers to an opinion, preference, prejudice, or inclination formed without reasonable justification that then influences an individual’s or group’s ability to evaluate a particular situation objectively or accurately; an uninformed preference for or against. [stereotyping is] A false or generalized conception of a group that results in unconscious or conscious categorization of each member of that group without regard for individual differences. [saloojee Slide One] At first in the documentary it just seems like this women is insecure about her appearance and full of self doubt and it seems like a person we should immediately dismiss. But then the documentary takes a turn and we soon learn about her painful past as she describes kids making fun of her race and an incident where her family had rocks thrown at them because of their Asian ‘look’. The filmmaker portrays the women’s race and gender issues very carefully and makes sure we are sympathetic to her plight. The film also runs rampant about stereotypes. The women talk about wanting to look like the ‘stereotypical’ girl next door or wanting to look like a normal Westernized women. The women in the feel like that if they change their eyes to look like a regular Westernized person, then all will be right with their lives. While the film tackles with bias towards the female characters’ because of their race, the filmmaker herself also shows bias when dealing with her subjects. While on of her subject is portrayed as actually possibly having a good reason to go for the surgery due to wanting to escape from her incidents and the painfulness of her past, the other women in the film seems to not have a good reason to want her eyes ‘westernized’, except for the fact she is just not too sure of herself and thinks all of her problems in life are do to her eyes being not being shaped like everyone else. While the documentary does a great job of showing one of the women’s plight with racism and stereotyping, the other women is just thrown out there with no rhyme or reason. Ideology plays a big part in any film, especially a documentary. An ideology is a set of interrelated beliefs about how society is organized and how it ought to be organized. (Saloojee Slide 1) Many filmmakers when making a film do not be objective and put their ideological beliefs into their filmmaking. In the documentary, it seems like Shinn does have an agenda. Shinn portrays both women in the film in a sympathetic light, making it seem like they are the victims of mass media’s desire that all women be blonde, skinny and beautiful. In the documentary she shows ads where women are told to be beautiful and are not exactly portrayed in the most positive of light. She makes sure we sympathize completely with the main characters of the film so we can fully understand why they are getting this drastic surgery and so we don’t quickly dismiss the women as being stupid. Clearly she is making sure at the end of the documentary we feel sorry for the two main subjects. She also ignores the other side of argument about how possibly the women could be turning against their heritage and she overlooks other issues. She never brings up how the other women in the film never seemed to have faced prejudice and seems to not ask them anything that may cast both females in a bad light. Her ideology definitely shines through her as by portraying the women as the victims she is trying to justify her own self views. Part of any movie is trying to connect to the viewer watching it so they can be entertained to their satisfaction. Western Eyes does a very good job at attempting to make an intellectual and emotional bond with the viewer. By watching Western Eyes, the viewer is asked to think about many things. They are asked to wonder whether these women’s reasons for the surgery are valid while also thinking about the stereotypes that exist in society today that are perpetuated by Western media. The movie is also fast moving with lots of quick cuts and the way the subjects are portrayed is designed to get the viewer’s attention. The suspense over whether or not the women will have the surgery also is played in as the filmmaker makes sure we will want to tune in and see if, why and the results of the surgery the women are after. I think Western Eyes holds true to the notion that documentaries must be both educative and transformative. It educates the viewer into why one of the women desperately wants to have this drastic surgery. It is not as educative as should be however since the reasons for surgery of the other main character are not explored to a great extent and thus the viewer is left with many questions about her while at the same time having many answers about the other women. I do think though it is greatly transformative since its gets the viewer to think about stereotypes in society perpetuated by mass media and also may change the way a viewer thinks or views the imagery of women in society today.
