Guest JMA Report post Posted February 12, 2003 Seeing as how I started this thread I feel it is my duty to tally up the votes in the Other category. If I missed you, please tell me. BTW, I didn't put Reagan on the list for the same reason I didn't put Clinton on there: I don't feel enough time has passed. I feel that a signifigant amount of time has to pass before one can be an official choice for "Greatest Ever." Now for the Other votes. John Adams - One vote Bill Clinton - Two votes William Harrison - One vote Ronald Reagan - Four votes George Washington - Three votes Eisenhower - One vote Harry Truman - One vote Hm. I seem to be missing three votes. I knew I should have made a bigger list... Here are the results so far. Franklin Roosevelt is currently leading with fifteen votes. Lincoln is slowly catching up with eleven votes. Kennedy is third with five votes. Reagan is the most popular Other runner with four votes. George Washington with three votes. Clinton with two votes. Adams, Harrison, Truman, and Eisenhower are tied with one vote each. Jefferson comes in last with no votes. Guest Some Guy Report post Posted February 12, 2003 SG, I think that Gerald Ford was worse than Carter in the doing nothing department. Not that either were that great, but that's just my opinion. The 70's were a sad time, eh :-(? I think Carter was worse because he was elected to make changes to improve the hole that Nixon and Ford left the country in and he made things worse. The fucking guy gave up the Panama Canal, whcih is now run by Red China. Good move, eh? THe thing wasn't that Carter did nothing, it was more that he just did the wrong things and had no balls when it came to foriegn policy. But greatness was just one election away. Yes, the 70s were a bad time, Stagflation, the oil crisis, Iranian hostages, hig taxes, embarassingly bad Presidents (it's kind of sad that Nixon was the best of the decade) etc... I'd say JFK was LEAGUES above Nixon. It's too bad he was taken down before he could make some real changes. JFK was my second choice, just behind Lincoln. The sad fact of the matter is that JFK was kill after serving less than 3 years and the "Great Society" that LBJ put through and JFK was in favor of was a complete and unabashed failure and may have caused the decline of the poor black family specifically and poor families in general. I thought he was a pretty solid president, but I don't think he did anything substantive enough to get much consideration for greatest ever. What exactly did he do to deserve your vote? C'mon, he built the Panama Canal, created National Parks, and earned a Nobel for his work in the Russo-Japanese settlement. AND he reached out to minorities (inviting Booker T Washington to lunch at the White House, a presidential first). AND was unquestionably the fittest and toughest President of the 20th century, what with being shot and still reading a 4 hour speech in Milwaukee near the end of his term. Jimmy Carter is the best President of the past thirty years because he was probably the only honest politician we've had since FDR and Lincoln before that. Carter was especially famous for the Camp David Accords which ended the Palestinian/Israeli conflict for that time, a feat that Reagan, the Bush's, and Clinton can't claim. I voted for Carter because I did extensive study and he left a good legacy in a time period riddled with political manipulation. FDR is most likely also an easy candidate for greatest president. If you get elected three times, when the Constitution says otherwise, it shows how much people loved him and showed how he won their trust. Worst president probably goes to Ronald Reagan. Washington is notable for being the first president and very little else. Jefferson's big accomplishments were mainly before he was president and he REALLY screwed up some stuff while he was in office. His big accomplishment was the Louisiana Purchase which, IMHO, was more luck than anything since it only happened because of the Hatian revolt screwing up Napoleon's plans in the Americas. Lincoln was a great war-time president but he had some serious problems with domestic issues. Kennedy? Don't make me laugh. JFK blew Bay of Pigs by being a pussy about the whole situation. If he'd either put his foot down about the invasion or given the operation adequate support, we wouldn't have had the Cuban Missile Crisis, which is where all of his big accomplishments were made. If he hadn't been killed in Dallas, he'd have been a MUCH more forgettable president. Carter? Please... Carter is decent in the role he's doing now but he was HORRIBLE as president. He insisted on doing everything himself instead of delegating it to his cabinet, which was a HORRIBLE mistake. Carter didn't know shit about international relations before he got into office and he learned as he went along, which lead to the Iranian hostage crisis and probably Anwar Sadat's asassination. On top of that, he gave the goddamn Panama Canal to Panama, which wouldn't be a problem if they weren't a fucking banana republic that we've had to send troops to.
