The Unofficially Official Musician's Topic

Recommended Posts

'Lo folks.

As you might have surmised, I don't post here all that often...I'm more of a lurker. Most folk tend to cover all the bases in the topics so I'm just happy to read and nod in agreement. :)

But this evening (it's 6:30PM over here in Scotland) I thought to myself 'bugger it', I'll start a topic in the board dedicated to my #1 passion in life; Music. B-)

So, this thread is intended for the musicians of the TSM forums to swap advice, talk about gear (be it guitar, bass, drums, Bolivian Catskin Rectal Banjo, whatever), plug your music/bands/gigs, and other general music performance guff.

Well, let's get the ball rolling. This is my music page. Have a listen, toss some feedback about, or talk about some other musician-y stuff. Just jam. :headbang:

I have yet to actually start a band, but I write stuff by myself and will eventually record a couple songs. I'm going to do everything (guitar, drums, keyboard, vocals) and hopefully it doesn't sound like crap.

First I need to get the appropriate recording devices...I'm getting a Mackie 1202 mixer and some mics (probably those Shure mics that the kids are raving about). I'm going to record to and edit on my PC with Sonar. I honestly don't know if I need to get anything else to do recordings. If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it very much.

My "group" will be called "Popli Kid." It's a joke on the Simpsons that only I seem to get. It will probably be mostly metal based music, but I've been listening to some jazz, so that will have some influence as well.

Once I record some stuff I'll post it on here, so everyone can tell me how much it sucks.

The only thing I use these days is my computer, Cakewalk Home Studio and a midi keyboard. I use the keyboard to play drums with and that's pretty much it. A lot of people use fruity loops and things like that for drums but even though I no longer play real drums, I still think it sounds better to do it by hand on the computer. Loops and machines just sound too boring. The same robot beat over and over. Doing it by hand gives it a less rigid sound. It was such a shock the first time I recorded this way. I was amazed at how much better it was than my old 4-track and 8-track stuff and whatnot. Actually, if you go to the link above, the first song is the first song I did with this recording setup.

Plus it's cheaper. I got Cakewalk, which also came with about 10 other programs to help in recording, and the keyboard for 200 something. My friend bought a digital 8 track for a few thousand. He gets 8 tracks of home recording quality. I get unlimited tracks with a bunch of bonus features like built in FX that with a little time and effort can get pretty close to studio quality. I think I got the better deal.

I've been looking for a drummer, a bassist, a vocalist, and probably a lead guitarist to do a punk/metal hybrid (think 1982 hardcore meets 1986 thrash metal, with dabs of NWOBHM in there, and a slight black metal influence) project...

...but everybody in Massachusetts either wants to play DMB tunes, be in a pop/punk band, or cover Cannibal Corpse.

At least you get people that want to do some Cannibal Corpse.

We've got people that are into Staind and Creed, and one band that sounds like a mix of Six Feet Under's cover songs and a Metallica cover band. I've been trying to start a grind band for god knows how long, and NO ONE's interested. I'm considering getting a drum machine, and becoming a one-man band. Mortician meets Agoraphobic Nosebleed.
