Supertape series

Recommended Posts

Guest nWoScorpion

I just purchased a series of these tapes (2,3,4 & 1992 to be more accurate) and was wondering how good these were. I know that 1992 had this Tuesday in Texas, and thats about it. If anyone can give a small review of the tapes, i apreciate it.

Just your standard Coliseum stuff, basically. Volume 2 does have a pretty decent profile on the Rockers. That's about all I can remember.. -Jim

Four had a nice if not strange little Koko B Ware vs Tito Santana match on it ( Well in 1990 face vs face matches were quite the rarity, I mean what happened to set this up did Paul Roma miss a flight or something?, Did the Warlord get stuck in traffic? Did Haku have the flu?) plus it has special profile on the Big boss man, eh eh? Oh I need a drink...

I saw WWF Supertape 4 and I thought it was alright, nothing spectacular but nothing too bad, they had a funny thing on it where the Bushwhackers are cooking and Gene Okerlund is there and the Bushwhackers start farting and Okerlund starts to pretend he is passing out,it was hilarious!!!

Thanks.

The only WWF Supertapes I've seen are volumes 3 and 4. Never seen volumes 1 and 2. I hope I do though.

Supertape is good for nostalgia. If you want good wrestling matches, this isn't the tape for you. There are some good matches though. Supertape 1 has the Cage Match with Zeus & Randy Savage vs. Hogan & Beefcake.

Just like all Coliseum Videos, they are hit and miss.  You never know what you're gonna get until you watch it.

No shit.  You could almost always depend on one good match per tape.  I picked up Best Of The WWF Vol. 20 a few nights ago.  The first match on the tape was Brutus Beefcake vs. Bad New Brown.  What a pile of crap that match was.  The second match was The Red Rooster vs. The Brooklyn Brawler.

There is a pretty decent match between the Hart Foundation and The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers with Brother Love as the special guest ref.  He wouldn't count anytime a Rougeau was pinned so it was nice to see them pick a win.  It was nice to see Brother Love take the Hart Attack after the match too.  The main event on the tape is Hulk Hogan vs. Rick Rude from what looks like a Boston Garden house show.  They start out the match with an arm wrestling contest in the middle of the ring, but it turns into not a bad match.

A Supertape that I saw that I forgot to say was Supetape 92 which included Tuesday In Texas. That was also the last ever Supertape released by Coliseum Video.

This may sound like a stupid question, but didn't Supertape replaced the "Best of WWF" videos? Those old school CV's are great for nostalgia. Too bad WCW never did videos like that in the early 90's. The only way to get old school WCW stuff is from tape traders. Where most of the tape quality suck.

The only WCW comp I own is a Best of Starrcade tape, which really sucks because the matches are clipped down to 3 or 4 minutes.  They also released those "Best of"... tapes, but those are also short.  I know the Rick Rude video runs 45 minutes.

I also own that one, along with the "Best of" Halloween Havoc. Which is also clipped. Although it doesn't bother me as I'm a mark for anything NWA/WCW from 1987-1993. I've seen a promo on the "Rick Rude Raw" video on the 45 minute Sting video. Which is also clipped.

What's on the tape?

The Halloween Phantom(Rick Rude)v.s. the z man at WCW Halloween Havoc 1991,Rick Rude v.s.Sting at WCW Clash Of The Champions No.17,Rick Rude v.s.Ricky Steamboat at WCW Superbrawl 1992,Rick Rude v.s.Ricky Steamboat at WCW Beach Blast 1992,Vader (in place of Rick Rude) v.s. Nikita Koloff at WCW Halloween Havoc 1992:Spin the wheel;Make the deal, Rick Rude v.s. Sting at Battlebowl 1992.

I took that off Amazon.  The tape is on "limited availibility" and is only about 30 min. long.  But still a good retrospective on Rude's early WCW career, which I didn't see live, as I didn't watch WCW until 95.

Damn, I have all of that stuff on tape already. LOL. Somebody must of done a typo, as Rude never wrestled Sting at (Starrcade) Battlebowl '92. They wrestled at Clash of the Champions XXI. That was a month before Battlebowl '92. Rude was hurt when Starrcade: Battlebowl '92 happened.

I do too, there were no descriptions when I bought it 3 years ago.

Was it the 1st neck/back injury he had then?

BTW Tony, congrats on being made a Mod.

Thanks Some Guy, I appreciate it.

It was Rude's first back (I think it was his back) injury that would cost him his career two years later. Supposedly Rude was going to get the WCW Title that night (Starrcade '92), but his injury made him miss the event. Rude never got the WCW Title, and lost his MEGA heat during his time off.

I have never heard anything like the heel heat he got during Suoerbrawl 2.  It was unreal, he couldn't get his pre-match spiel out.  it's really a shame Sting ended his career, he was the man.  And other than Perfect the only heel I liked (rooted for) as a kid.

I agree. It was HUGE. That may be the loudest heel heat I've ever heard. Rude was the biggest heel in wrestling during that time.

Yes they did Tony. The WWF put out the Best of the WWF Volume 20 some time before Summerslam '89 and that was the final installment in the series. Some time in early 1990, they released the first Supertape. I personally, always like the Best of the WWF series a lot more, because more times than not they had a lot of good stuff on the tapes. The Supertape series was just overloaded with worthless dark matches. Some of the only good matches on the Supertapes are from Madison Square Garden shows.

As for dreamer420, I got to see Volume 20 about a year and a half ago and I must say, as someone who has seen all 20 volumes many times, it's one of the volumes in the series. The first two matches are pretty bad, but as you said the Harts/Rougeas match is good and there is a 16 man battle royal featured on the tape as well, that I must say is one of the best battle royals that I have ever seen. The jobbers in the match are minimal and featured are guys like Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect. Love him or hate him, the coronation of King Hacksaw Jim Duggan is kind of fun to watch. The guy looks like he's having such a great time that it's kind of hard to not somewhat enjoy it. The Hogan/Rude stuff is average, but it's from 1987 and Rude was still plenty green at that point. Overall a very good tape and definately worh the rental.

I like the coronation too.  The ceremony is nothing more than a few faces standing in the ring, all in character, as Hacksaw is crowned King.  I forgot about the battle royal and I like seeing Bret Hart win it.

I got to buy it for $5.95 and the box was still brand new that it came in.
