Dunk Contest

Recommended Posts

Guest Sandman9000

God, to anyone who had written the dunk contest off, it's back. Desmond Mason and Jason Richardson unleahed some sick shit. Richardson won with a baseline between the legs reverse. Amare Stoudamire has some nasty stuff as well, but blew a 360 and didn't make it to the finals, nor did Richard Jefferson.

Damn, that was good!

That last dunk was nuts. Especially after how the announcers had been saying he couldnt do the toss since he needed something new. But to bust out a toss into an east bay funk, into a reverse was ridiculous.

And how about the stupid fucker who shot one of the rebounds in Stojakovic's first second round attempt. The horn was a mistake but who in the hell who shoot a rebound during the competition.

Aside from that last dunk, I wasn't all that impressed. The Carter/Bryant/McGrady contest still stands out as the best of the recent dunk contests...

Bryant wasn't in the same contest with Carter and T-Mac, unless your talking about 2 different competitions.

I loved this dunk contest. Mason and Richardson delivered very nicely this year. At the end, when J-Rich did that sweet dunk, I was actually hoping it got a 48, so they tied and could show off some more dunks. Hopefully, these two come back again next year again.

Steve Francis was the other guy in the 2000 Vince-McGrady contest. I liked this year's contest, but it was too short. Not enough people. But my favorite part of the day was when Jason Richardson bounced the ball off Carlos Boozer's face and hit a 3 in his eye during the Rookie Game.

That was funny. Boozer didn't even react or flinch when the ball got bounced off his head.

Richardson said that was his final dunk of the night. It was proably better that Richardson won it than and not later.

They need to add at least one more player, and keep it Guards and Small Forwards only. Stoudemire and Jefferson looked to big and there dunks didn't look has spectacular has Mason's, and Richardson's did.

Stoudemire was impressive to me. Remember, even 6-10 guys can fly. Shawn Kemp in the early '90's was an impressive dunker, and the guy whom Dee Brown was.

Stoudemire wasn't bad, I just think the smaller players are capable of better dunks.

Speaking of Slam Dunk Champions,

What ever happen to Harold Miner AKA The Next Michael Jordan...

I think Stoudamire will be fine next year. The problem he had was figuring out how far from the rim he needed to be on his dunks. The little guys can just go to it but he needs to extend. The second round he was just too close to the basket. Next year he would do well, IMO.

I wonder if Yao or Manute Bol could dunk it without jumping..that would rule.

No, I meant Stevie Franchise, but Kobe's name popped up in my head for some reason...

During his first home game, Yao dunked it and barely jumped, so I'd say that he'd probably be capable of doing that. And I'm sure that Bol has done so during a game...

I think the guy who shot the rebound in, thought peja's round was over after the bell went off

Maybe so, but Peja had already put up at least 2 or 3 more shots after the buzzer at the point when that guy tried to shoot. I don't know why he would have thought it was over.

Dunk contest stunk. Let me get this straight...

Amare goes between the legs and dunks...everybody goes nuts and pretends that it's something new.

Mason goes between the legs and dunks....everybody goes nuts and pretends that it's something new even though Amare did it in the first round.

Richardson goes between the legs and dunks....everybody goes nuts and pretends that it's something new even though Amare did it in the first round and Mason did it in the second round.

Huh?

The NBA really needs to start modeling their dunk contest after the college dunk contest. Every year it blows the NBA one away. I missed it this year so I'm hoping that ESPN replays it. How is it that there is so much creativity in the college contest but zero creativity on the NBA level?

Ah, the words of a non-fan.

Those three dunks were NOTHING alike. Amare, Mason and Richardson's dunks bore NO similarities except the fact they went between their legs before they did them. Obviously you don't have a lick of athletic skill or ever played basketball. Otherwise you'd probably actually appreciate the difficulty of what Richardson and Mason performed. To you, it just looked like three people went and did the same dunk. That's too bad.

Someone who just sits in their house all day (Lethargic must describe your demeanor as well as being your 'net handle) and posts on a messageboard obviously can't appreciate the little things like doing something with your LEFT hand as opposed to the normal RIGHTY way, or someone taking the ball between their legs from the back to the front and not from the front to the back like it's normally done. Or spinning the opposite way of the norm on a 360 or dunking a ball backwards when it's usually done forwards from that particular position. That's why to YOU, those three dunks looked the same. Obviously the crowd on hand can appreciate such things and are more educated than you in that sense and that's why they went nuts and YOU didn't.

Look at the judges...Spud Webb, MJ, Dr. J, 'Nique and Dee Brown. Yet YOU say it stunk? I think those guys know a thing or two more about dunking than you.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings by not creaming my pants for a dunk we've seen a thousand times in the dunk contest every single year. Ooh, left handed. Wow. I am so impressed by that. Why don't we just go ahead and give Richardson the league MVP since he can dunk left handed!

Thanks for informing that I'm a non-fan. I wondered why the hell I had been watching this bullshit for so many years. Now I realize that I'm not even a fan! It'll save me a lot of time to not have to watch it anymore. That way I can post on messageboards more often.

I didn't think any of the dunks stunk. The contest itself stunk. Not enough contestants. Not enough creativity. No excitement. Nobody watching over here was excited about it and nobody in the arena seemed into it. Once the 3-point contest was over it seemed like the crowd died. I don't think what the guys did was awful, but it's just not anything new or impressive. I admire their ability to do that and I'm not one that says they should end the contest. But it could be better. They need some guys in that contest that possess some personality and fire. These four just went out there and dunked. It was just too blah. "We run, we dunk, we sit back down." Nothing like pumping up the shoes, putting tape on the free throw line, wearing a blindfold. Watching Brent Barry dance after shooting 3's was more fun than watching these guys dunk no matter which way they spun or what hand they used because he showed some personality and it got the crowd fired up.

The point is those weren't dunk that we've seen before much less a thousand times before in any dunk contest any year before. That's where you're wrong.
