Personal draft goofs

I got to thinking about the mock NFL draft that would be going on here soon and started thinking about what the biggest "They should have done this" error I ever made was.

Mine would have to be during the whole Saints wanting Ricky Williams deal. I felt that the Eagles should have taken the Saints deal (Entire draft, 1 and 3 next year, 1 after that IIRC) and taken...gulp...Cade McNown with the first rounder they got in return. He seemed to just always win and I thought he could continue that. Granted my goof would have netted about 8 extra picks but still.

I was wondering if anyone else had any classic blunders.

Oh, and I thought Freddie Mitchell was a solid choice. God damn UCLA.

I would have taken Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning back in the 1997 draft. I thought that Manning was good in the short term, but Leaf would develop into a solid NFL QB.

Well, after the first year I was proven wrong. Manning set rookie records in nearly every passing category. Leaf got benched after a decent start. Then the downward spiral began.

As for Cade and Freddie, personally I'm happy they had their game at UCLA. UCLA's been jinxed in the draft lately, even Foster went down to injury and might not play for a while. Sucks that these guys aren't going to have great pro careers, but it was nice to see them when they were good.

Edited cause I originally wrote myself as picking Manning when I meant Leaf.

I honest to god not suprised Leaf bombed. He was too big, didn't move well, played in a system that used 5 Wideouts. There was also reports of him causing problems.

I thought J.J. Stokes was a great pick for the 49ers.

Heath Shuler

How about the 1996 NBA draft when Toronto drafted Marcus Camby second ahead of Abdur-Rahim, and of course that Kobe guy who went 13th. I can excuse them missing out on Bryant because 10 other teams thought the same thing, but the thing that really sticks out in my head is that picture of Isiah Thomas with both fingers crossed hoping Philly didn't pick Camby. What a bummer that would have been, to have had to settle for Iverson instead.

Iverson would have refused to come. That was known going in.

How about the Trail Blazers taking Sam Bowie, instead of that Jordon-guy.

Imagine the Blazers with Jordon and Clyde the Glide.

I am a Warrior's fan (two in row baby) and they have made some really boneheaded choices. Taking Chris Washburn with the third overall pick in 86(?). Trading Mitch Richmond for Billy Owens on draft day. Picking a back-up center-Todd Fuller instead of Kobe. Passing on McGrady and taking Adonal Foyle (I like that he is a hard worker and has improved, but he is back up, McGrady is tha real deal). I am going to wait a year or two before I past judgement on Dunleavy, way to early in his career to do that. But I won't be surprise if people comment on him being such a wasted pick.

Or how about all those teams that passed on Karl Malone and Rodman and Marc Price in the 86 draft.

I'm sure Kobe would've refused to sign with Toronto as well. I mean hell he wouldn't even sign with Charlotte who was a much better team than Toronto.

I thought Iverson had just refused to play for the Grizzlies and not Toronto?

Or was that Steve Francis I'm thinking of?

He refused to play in Canada period. He made some asinine comment about it being too cold, which is idiotic considering Philly is colder than Vancouver.

Steve Francis was drafted by the Grizzlies and demanded a trade, so you are probably thinking of him.

The Packers have had quite a few bombs (Mid rders : RBS Travis Jervey, Chris Darkins, Leshon Johnson, WRS Derrick Mayes, Anthony Lucus, DE Johnathan Brown etc) for every mid rd hit (Freeman, Robert brooks, William Henderson, Edgar Bennett, Dorsey Levens, Mike Mckensie,KGB, Adam Timmerman ) And of course they have been on par with the Redskins with 1st Rd Busts (Terrell Buckley, John Micheals, Jamal Reynolds, Wayne Simmons etc) And the few 1st rders who have stuck around were pretty average (OT Ross Verba who had to be moved to guard, OG Aaron Taylor who was injury prone, DE Vonnie Holiday who has started, but never really impressed me)

The Super Bowl win was greatly helped by Free Agents (Reggie White, Frank Winters, Gilbert Brown, Sean Jones, Andre Rison, Keith Jackson, Desmond Howard, Don Bebee, etc) and trades (DE Matt LaBounty for HOF FS Eugene Robinson! 3rd Stringer Brett Farve for a 1st Rd pick)

I live in the area where Travis Jervey grew up and went to college (The Citadel). I really hate how everyone I know thinks he's great.
