Karl Gotch question

Recommended Posts

Guest JHawk

I stumbled across some old Detroit Big Time Wrestling results, and I noticed a result:

10/19/1963: Karl Gotch b. Czaja Nandor to retain the "European Heavyweight Title"

Does anybody know if this title was actually legit and if so, what it's actual name is? It's not over at Great Hisa's title histories site (unless it was the Boston version of the World Title, which I doubt), and Karl Gotch didn't exactly hold a lot of championships despite being among the best actual wrestlers in the world.

Any help?

There is a title with that name over at Hisa's site. The disclaimer states:

This is a combined list of different versions of the European Heavyweight Titles, each of which was probably the most siginificant version at the time. Each version may or may not be connected to another.

Going by that, Gotch may of had some spin-off version of the Title.

Despite being one of the best wrestlers in the business (comparable in ability to Lou Thesz), Gotch didn't hold many major titles (if any at all.) because of an incident where he attacked and beat up Buddy Rogers in a legit shoot for refusing to wrestle him. This caused Gotch to be pretty much blackballed from any major involvement in American wrestling.

I heard that Gotch wouldn't wrestle a worked match.

Somehow I doubt that (he'd have never wrestled against anyone except Thesz), but I would bet he wouldn't have wrestled professionally if it had always been like it is today.

The belt was simply called the Eurpean Heavyweight belt which was a jab at all of the other wrestling company's that were around at the time. Promoters were very cutthroat in the European wrestling business and trying to discredit other company's belts was fairly common during the '50's to the '80's.

Gotch was very fluid in the ring but if he got into the ring with someone who did not wrestle a mat based style or had no clue how to sell legit wrestling moves and holds which Gotch ysed regularly in his matches, you were going to be in for a long night.
