Guest MDH257 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 The Oscar nods are announced tomorrow morning so I figured I'd toss these out. After they're announced anyone who cares can post their thoughts in this thread. These are predictions, not who I actually think deserves to be nominated. Best Picture Chicago Gangs of New York The Hours LOTR: The Two Towers The Pianist Best Director Stephen Daldry, The Hours Peter Jackson, LOTR: TT Rob Marshall, Chicago Roman Polanski, The Pianist Martin Scorsese, Gangs of New York Best Actor Adrien Brody, The Pianist Michael Caine, The Quiet American Daniel Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York Richard Gere, Chicago Jack Nicholson, About Schmidt Best Actress Salma Hayek, Frida Nicole Kidman, The Hours Juianne Moore, Far From Heaven Meryl Streep, The Hours Rene Zellwegger, Chicago Best Supporting Actor Chris Cooper, Adaptation Ed Harris, The Hours Paul Newman, Road to Perdition Dennis Quaid, Far From Heaven John C. Reilly, Chicago Best Supporting Actress Kathy Bates, About Schmidt Julianne Moore, The Hours Queen Latifah, Chicago Meryl Streep, Adaptation Caterine Zeta-Jones, Chicago Best Original Screenplay Antwone Fisher Far From Heaven Gangs of New York My Big Fat Greek Wedding Punch Drunk Love Best Adapted Screenplay About Schmidt Adaptation Chicago The Hours The Pianist I'm know I'm gonna git bit for predicting the Best Picture and Director to match up. I wouldn't be suprised if Adaptation or About Schmidt take LOTR's spot and Peter Jackson ends up being the Best Director Nomminee who's movie isn't nominated (there's one every year). Two More Predictions: Chicago gets at least 12 nods Bowling for Columbine will not get nominated for Best Documentary.
Guest Violent Mahatma Report post Posted February 11, 2003 I'm hoping against hope that Igby Goes Down gets nominated in at least one major category, preferably Kieran Culkin for Best Leading Actor. That movie was overlooked bigtime by the Globes, IMO.
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted February 11, 2003 were there any good animated movies out this year? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Powerpuff Girls. Gangs of New York should at least get Director and Actor.
Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 11, 2003 were there any good animated movies out this year? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Powerpuff Girls. The Nick film, about the girl and her family that goes to Africa or something was very much liked by many critics that I heard review it. I didn't see it though, so I can't say. Some critics liked The Wild Thornberries? ye god...that is such a horrible show I can't imagine that it would make for a good movie. It would be like Hey Arnold having a good movie. Guest MDH257 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Because there were more films this year there's going to be 5 nominees for Best Animated Feature, not 3 like last year. Had there been only 3 spots up for grabs I might have been worried that Spirited Away would get snubbed.
Guest Mole Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Bowling for Columbine will not get nominated for Best Documentary. Nope, it defiently will.
Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Bowling for Columbine will not get nominated for Best Documentary. Nope, it defiently will. I don't see how it can't not only get nominated, but even win. It must, I just don't see how it can not. It's the single most greatest documentary I have ever seen in my life. Hell, it opened even MY eyes to many things.
Guest MDH257 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 If You know anything about the history of the Best Documentary catagory then you will know that these factors always work against a film getting a nod: 1.) Actually having played in theaters nationwide. 2.) Mainstream recognition/critical acclaim. 3.) Box Office success 4.) Actually being an entertaining film Roger & Me, Hearts of Darkness, and Hoop Dreams are just three examples (off the top of my head) of great films that not only didn't win Best Documentary, they weren't even nominated. I want Bowling for Columbine to get nominated and win as much as anyone. But knowing the history of this catagory, I'll believe it when I see it. You don't know how happy I'll be if I'm wrong. Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 These are predictions, not who I actually think deserves to be nominated. Best Picture Chicago Gangs of New York The Hours LOTR: The Two Towers The Pianist You nailed it here
Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Looking at the list I see Eminem has made history getting the first rap song nominated for an Oscar (figures it'd be a white guy) And shock of shock they actually nominated Bowling for Columbine (Now let's see it win)
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted February 11, 2003 So Gollum didn't get a nomination after all? That sucks, but it figures seeing as how the Oscar voters have no balls. Would've been nice to see them make history and cause some excitement by nominating a fully cgi character. Also it would've been good because it would encourage movie makers to take more care with cgi and not just make it a second thought.
Guest MDH257 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Well I was 33 ot of 40 on my predictions. Which is 82.5%. I got 5 out of 5 on Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress. I was one off in prdicting how many nods for Chicago.

Guest Mik at Cornell Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Is it just me, or did LotR get shit on? Peter Jackson NOT EVEN NOMINATED for best director? No nominations in Best original score, Cinematography or Costume Design? How can TT not get nominated for Costume Design?
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Maybe because the Lord of the Rings got all those nominations the first time around and it's all the same costumes and such. Most think that they'll wait until the third one and reward the trilogy as a whole with best picture and best director. I'll believe that when it happens. It wouldn't shock me if Bowling for Columbine wins best documentary. Michael Moore is an established figure now and because of that, in away, less controversial or out there than he once was. He's now at a level where the Academy can give him an Oscar and then pat themselves on the back for being so cutting edge when he didn't even get nominated for Roger and Me. The rest of the awards pretty much fell I thought and I'll make predictions on who I think will win later. Most likely we'll get a thread for that before too long. Guest Lord of The Curry Report post Posted February 11, 2003 All the same costumes? You quite obviously haven't seen The Two Towers. Nice to see the acadamy slowly going back to their Lily White persona. One negro nominated in the best supporting actress category, one latino nominated for best director and one latina nominated for best actress. None of them will win, either. Oh, and Peter Jackson will win next year. It's all but a fuckin guarantee now. 2004- Year of The Ring Return of the King, Best Picture Peter Jackson, Best Director Viggo Mortennson, Best Actor Ian McKellan or Elijah Wood, Best Supporting Actor

Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted February 11, 2003 I can't under ANY circumstances allow the star of NORTH win an academy award... Why not? North had lots of talent involved, which made it even worse.
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted February 11, 2003 even good actors can have bad movies. Just because North is the worst movie ever put to film doesn't mean everybody in it are bad actors or that Rob Reiner is a bad director.

Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Looking at the nominees I just noticed that Episode II got nominated for best visual effects, but Minority Report didn't. (Shakes head in disbelief) And out of that list of 3 movies for VE, I think LotR:TT wins by default. I too hope that the entire LotR Series gets honored next year with a bunch of awards. And Since TT was the only movie of the 5 nominated for best Picture that I've seen, and looking at the other movies that are on the list, I could see it winning, but it won't. And just a little side rant..The Academy Award is for best picture of the last YEAR..not LAST TWO 1/2 MONTHS. I surely thought Road to Perdition would have gotten some nods..but I guess being a movie that was released all the way back in the summer makes it to easily forgotten. And Ice Age better win best Animated Film. And, slim chance that Roman Polanski or anything/anyone associated with the Pianist wins...

Guest Lord of The Curry Report post Posted February 12, 2003 I'm pretty sure the Academy goofed up here. Look at the list of Directors Nominees. They are all nominated for Best Picture. Except for one. Peter Jackson. Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this here? Probably yes......
Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 12, 2003 Why? It wasn't even that good anyways and really, How was it different from last year? They can just give it to him next as a thank you for jacking up the income for Hollywood.
