Guest treble charged Report post Posted February 11, 2003 If that's what the Rangers had to give up, my guess is that the Leafs offerred them $5.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Samulesson is a forward... as the leafs, I would believe they offered him some stuff, but the depths of players they would trade would probably hurt the team...but adding Laukannen on the team would help the crappy Leaf D. This was a mere dump the high priced players in financial situation problem.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Hey, New York made a blockbuster trade!! Now let's sit back and watch as they once again miss the playoffs...
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted February 11, 2003 The worst part is the Penguin GM said it was a hockey move that will help them make the playoffs, not a financial one, which everyone knows it was. I think the Rangers GM even said that no one would turn down this deal and that they were lucky to catch them at a bad time.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Kovalev = bust in NY, playing somewhere else next year (treble, him ending up wearing the Leaf would NOT surprise me) NY = misses the playoffs yet again, Slats ends up coaching/GMing some squirt team to a last place finish next year. Pittsburgh = proves yet again that having a superstar to trade doesn't always mean you'll get anything back in return (Jaromir, I'm looking at you)
Guest evilhomer Report post Posted February 11, 2003 The Leafs claim to have made Pittsburg a much better offer, but knowing their history, they were probably unwilling to take on that much salary without giving some back in return.
Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted February 11, 2003 when WAS the last time the NYR made the playoffs?
Guest gthureson Report post Posted February 11, 2003 Pittsburgh got lesser quality in return because of their insistence on packing up unmovable crap with Kovalev. No one really wanted Mike Wilson, Dan Lacoutre or Janne Laukennen. But Patrick wanted to move their salaries as well. In essence, he cut $8.1 million off his payroll. Purely a money deal, though the guys he got should be decent NHLers, none of them will be anywhere near as good as Kovalev.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted February 11, 2003 The Leafs claim to have made Pittsburg a much better offer, but knowing their history, they were probably unwilling to take on that much salary without giving some back in return. Reportedly the players would have been Wade Belak, Brad Boyes, Karel Pilar, and Alexi Ponikarovsky.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted February 11, 2003 If I were the Leafs, I would have offered up Antropov, Hoglund, Belak/Pilar and cash for Kovalev and Laukkanen. That's better, IMO, than what the Pens ended up with.

Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted February 13, 2003 Why wouldn't Pittsburgh make the best trade possible, and then move those players for other, cheaper players? It's not like they'd be contractually obligated to keep all those players, they could then move them for younger players, or draft picks.
Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted February 13, 2003 I looked it up- NYR havent made the playoffs since the 96-97 season. They were eliminated from the Eastern Conference Semi's by Philly. That was the Great One's only playoff experience while in NY.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted February 13, 2003 I hate the Rangers with a passion and usually love mocking their misery but now it''s just getting sad. When are they going to realise that having a team full of superstars doesn't always work. I mean- Lindros, Bure, Poti, Leetch, Kovalev, Holik- that's quite a list of talent there. They should really try to rebuild and quit trading away all the prospects
Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted February 13, 2003 They actually did keep their top prospect, Dan Blackburn. It shows that they're vaguely planning for the future, sort of. Since they're going to miss the playoffs again, I'd retool in the offseason if I was them. Trade away a useless name like Bure for a couple of good but not spectacular players with youth. It could really help.

It's not like they'd be contractually obligated to keep all those players, they could then move them for younger players, or draft picks. Cause everybody knows Pittsburgh can't hold on to salary, and so they get lowballed by everybody. Plus, they got Sather to take a bunch of other crap off their hands. For Patrick and his payroll, thats as important as what he got in return. If he can't get Lundmark or Blackburn out of NY for Kovalev (though there are some that think Lundmark has been ruined by the Rangers anyway), then why would he be able to get good prospects out other teams for, say - Petr Nedved and Matthew Barnaby? They'd still need to move that salary, and not take any on in return, except the offers for Nedved wouldn't be as good as they were for Kovalev and Barnaby less though. Craig Patrick is a good GM, but he is over a barrel trying to get a decent return for anybody he deals. Except in a minor deal, he can't even make even-up deals in terms of salary. If Mario does retire, that does open up $5 million, but with their bottom line, the Penguins are pooched. They need someone with real money to step forward, buy the team and build an ew arena on their own.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted February 14, 2003 Lindros is a bust for them...get him off the team. Bure/Kovalev can be a dangerous line... Its just that the Rangers need D.
