Guest SuicidalAfterBash91 Report post Posted March 28, 2002 anything after that is just ear candy. Jesus H. Criminy. It's not like Rancid are the only punk band ever to exist. And I'm not just talking about Tim Armstrong & The Silencers, Lars Fredriksen & The Bastards, The Distillers, Op Ivy or any other Rancid offshoot. I mean after all, Rancid touched their punk rock with the evil sound of horns. It's not like Agnostic Front were throwing down sax lines were they? Anyone who think punk begins and ends with Rancid is way too self-concious for my liking. Anyway, the bands...three from each sub genre. (Punk Rock... 1) The Dropkick Murphys 2) Bad Religion 3) Pennywise (Okay it's just a more melodic BR, but still...) (Punk Ska... 1) Less Than Jake 2) Reel Big Fish 3) Goldfinger (Hardcore/Post Hardcore 1) At The Drive In 2) Agnostic Front 3) The Adolescents (Ameoba = Best Song Ever) (Emo 1) Jimmy Eat World 2) Weezer 3) Deftones (Bleh) (Other 1) Green Day (Bleh x2) 2) The Henry Rollins Band 3) Primus There We Go

Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted March 30, 2002 when did rancid use a horn section? do you consider primus a punk band? I'd give NOFX a mention as well, somewhere.
Guest BottleRocket Report post Posted April 1, 2002 "Punk" has been pretty hard to define since they term was first used to describe music. Here are a few bands I enjoy that I would classify as "punk": MC5 The Stooges The Talking Heads The Ramones The Clash The Buzzcocks The Business X Minor Threat The Bad Brains Stiff Little Fingers The Circle Jerks Rocket From The Crypt Fugazi Since someone mentioned punk-ska (which I absolutely hate), I thought I would mention my favorite ska bands also: Jamaica: Band: The Skatalites Vocalists: Jackie Opel, Laurel Aitken (I consider Toots, Desmond, The Wailers, etc. more closely associated with rocksteady and reggae...although they recorded early ska singles) British: The Specials The Bad Manners (I never cared for Madness, The Selector, The Beat, etc. or many of the post-2-Tone era British bands...Hotknives, Riffs, etc.) New York: The Slackers Skinnerbox NYC Stubborn All-Stars The Insteps The Scofflaws (And all the NYC Ska Mob/Version City projects) (I always hated the Toasters...the Coolie Ranx era was listenable, but that's about all) Washington, DC: The Pietasters The Checkered Cabs Eastern Standard Time The Instigators (I wasn't really into The Now or The Skunks or the NoVa scene...Decepticonz, Skalicious, Shenanigans...or the recent bands-- Rachet Boys, Seven Cents, etc.) Other East Coast: Johnny Tooo Bad & The Strikeouts (I hated the Philly sound...Ruder Than You, etc) Midwest: The Skalars (not the Skolars/Telegraph mind you) The Articles The Siren Six! The South: The Robustos (I never was a fan of Magadog or the other Florida bands) California: Donkey Show Hepcat See Spot Other: Easy Big Fella (Washington) The Skoidats (Montana) Germany: Richie Senior/Dr. Ring-Ding in all his projects Canada: King Apparatus/Chris Murray/Venice Shoreline Chris
Guest BottleRocket Report post Posted April 1, 2002 when did rancid use a horn section? Well, Rancid has been known to employ horns from the NYC Ska Mob for such gigs as the Tibetan Freedom Concert. Also, on "Life Won't Wait" they added horns (as well as backing vocals and keyboards) to several tracks using musicians from their Hellcat label. "Op Ivy or any other Rancid offshoot" Ummm...technically speaking...Rancid is an Operation Ivy offshoot and not vice-versa.
Guest Report post Posted April 10, 2002 Black Flag and old Offspring, and if you think Sum 41 is punk then you don't know punk. At least I havn't seen any Blink 182 on here unless I missed it.
Guest Report post Posted April 10, 2002 I won't list them by genre, too tired, but: Jimmy Eat World Dropkick Murphy's Alkaline Trio Fugazi The Ataris Less Than Jake Weezer Primus Also, the old stuff of Green Day and Offspring and the REALLY old Blink-182 stuff. They're new stuff is OK for what it is.. which is really just a poppy sound. Their last 2 CD's have been bleh.

Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted April 14, 2002 again, i'm interested that people list the mighty PRIMUS as a punk band. they are one of my favourite bands, but i don't really consider them punk at all. and yes, Coffin Surfer, misfits kick ass. Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted April 15, 2002 No mention of the greatest punk band ever THE MISFITS!!!!! You people suck. Ummm... I mentioned the misfits. And to the other guy, I consider Primus punk, but I think a lot of people wouldn't because it doesn't fit into what has come to be known as punk. But looking back historically, they would fit in with what punk was, before punk somehow got narrowed into a very limitedly defined sub-genre of alternative music. Talking Heads were punk. Patti Smith was punk. Iggy and the Stooges were punk. Sonic Youth were considered punk. And yet somehow only three chords and snarling is what's considered punk today. Guest Coffin Surfer Report post Posted April 15, 2002 Punk started out as a broad term for Underground Garage Rock bands. However By 77 in England, 90% of the bands sounded like the Damned and the Sex Pistols, so the term punk became most associated with that sound. Even in America around that time their was the hardcore punk movement, which declared if it wasn't simple, hard, fast, and short it an't punk. But then you have postpunk which is bands that followed the old punk ideals, that punk can be anything. Primus's sound is heavily rooted from postpunk legends the Minutemen. However you can make an argument that Primus is alternative rock/metal. In the end just depends on what scene the band associates themselves with. Primus really isn't that tight with the punk community like the Minutemen was.
Guest BobbyBacklund Report post Posted April 15, 2002 Rancid, The Clash, and Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet. Lars and the Bastards just sound like complete and utter trash to me...
Guest EI Cubano Report post Posted April 16, 2002 From the old school I like Social Distortion who still rock, the Circle Jerks who are decent but overrated as hell, same goes for DK in my opinion. They were controversial but J. Biafra had a horrible voice IMO and I think more people listened to them for the sake of being "punk" than they did because they liked the music. Op Ivy and Slapstick were great old school ska bands too. Moving into the middle ages, Green Day were a decent band who have really matured and grown as artists as opposed to Blink who are pushing thirty, some married with kids and still writing songs exclusively about urine. Their new CD tried to cover a broader topic range but still seemed pretty shallow not to mention the fact that sounded tighter in 97 when I saw them in front of ten people than they do now. Less than Jake have been kicking around for a while now and are absolutely my favorite live band to see, they are such a fun act and basically everything they have ever recorded has been gold. They are from G'ville where I spend a lot of time and are nice ass guys to chill with and loaded as hell. All/The Descendents, Good Riddance, No Use, Strung Out, Pennywise, the Ataris, Fenix Tx, Good Charlotte, Millencolin & Rufio. Newer stuff I have been loving the hell out of is Something Corporate, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New (who are fucking AWESOME)The Starting Line and Yellowcard (who are out of Jax and just got signed to Capital in a HUGE deal). Emo aint too bad with the exception of Saves the Day who I really don't like as much as most people. Dashboard Confessional has quietly been one of the best acts around for a few years now and now is busting into the mainstream on MTV. The Get Up Kids & Jimmy Eat World are awesome too but that goes without saying. My favorite band is easily New Found Glory who I have been seeing for about 4 years now since they came out of Coral Springs. They bring the energy live and are just awesome, they have a new song for download off the new CD if anyone cares. As for the "a band is not punk when they get popular" arguement I just don't see it. I like NFG and they "payed their dues" to the "scene" like thousands of other bands are doing right now. If a band is touring, they obviously can't have another job and more often than not you see them asking the audience for a place to stay for the night. If a GREAT band like NFG can make money doing what they love than more power to them, just because their fanbase grows to the point that they can no longer hold shows in small venues doesn't mean they are doing something wrong, especially considering the fact that punk is going pop (good comp by the way) a little more by the day it seems. Guest DrainYou42 Report post Posted April 18, 2002 Here's My List: The Ramones Sex Pistols X-Ray Spex Damned Clash Green Day (their earlier stuff isn't half bad) Richard Hell/Television
Guest Dr. Wrestlingphysics Report post Posted April 18, 2002 The Pogues were mentioned earlier in this thread, an while agree that they are/were an excellent band, with punkish lyrics and motives, it was hardly a punk sound, more based on rebel folk songs. My list: The Clash, best band EVER. The Sex Pistols (first album, anything after that was indeed "flogging a dead horse") Stiff Little Fingers (first two albums especially) The Jam (punk/mod start, quickly evolved into an even better band)
Guest Dr. Wrestlingphysics Report post Posted April 18, 2002 And Sum 41 are neither punk, nor good.
Guest toggle Report post Posted April 18, 2002 Let's not get carried away with the D.I.Y. stuff. Just because a lot of people like a band doesn't mean they're bad. But whatever. I'm currently deeply into Weezer. Other punk stuff I like is Ramones, Misfits and Rancid. To be honest, I've never got into the Clash that much.
Guest BottleRocket Report post Posted April 20, 2002 Op Ivy and Slapstick were great old school ska bands too. No disrespect, but calling Operation Ivy and Slapstick "old school" is so off-base that it's humorous. It's hard to be "old school" thirty years into a genre's history. Guest punkSTEriot Report post Posted April 23, 2002 Cubano, Brand New??? Brand Fucking New?????? I'm from Long Island, everyone around here is completely in love with them, I CANT FREAKIN STAND BRAND NEW!!!! Especially that "Semester Abroad" song. Unless the song is satire that I didn't catch, it's basically a paranoid boyfriend whining that his girlfriend is going abroad and may meet other guys. Taking Back Sunday is also huge on LI, but I can stand them somewhat. I really like "Cute Without The E," but the rest of their songs are kinda boring. As for punk bands I like, I'll list a few: Anti-Flag Midtown MxPx H2O A New Found Glory the Starting Line Weezer Glassjaw Saves The Day About Blink 182: I don't know if this has been mentioned on this board before...the "spirit" of punk is doing your own thing, and not basing your life on what's accepted. Since Blink continues to make POP-punk rather than pop-PUNK and go on MTV, they're going against the accepted punk standard and doing their own thing, so in that sense they're taking the punk spirit to a whole new level.
