Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 14, 2003 zero cool : looks like you get a little more flutie flakes In a move that will save the San Diego Chargers $3 million on their 2003 salary cap, and also likely salvage a roster spot for Doug Flutie, the nine-year veteran quarterback has restructured his contract. Flutie agreed to reduce his base salary from the $4.5 million that he was scheduled to earn under the six-year contract signed with the Chargers in 2001 to just $655,000, the minimum salary for a player of his tenure. In addition, Flutie will receive a $500,000 roster bonus on March 17 and an additional bonus of $345,000 if he is on the San Diego 53-man roster on Sept. 7 for the start of the regular season. In all, Flutie can earn $1.5 million for the 2003 campaign. The maneuver will dramatically reduce Flutie's cap value, dropping it from $5.26 million to $2.26 million, a hefty savings for the Chargers. The base salary of $655,000 for the 2003 season, ESPN.com has learned, is fully guaranteed. There are three more seasons on the contract and none of those were affected by the restructuring. The cap values in those three years, however, are prohibitive, especially for a backup quarterback. The cap figure for 2004 is $6.25 million, and then is $6.76 million for 2005 and $7.26 million for 2006. If Flutie is still with the Chargers then, those years will have to be reworked. Flutie, 40, lost his starting job to Drew Brees last summer in training camp. He appeared in just one game and completed three of 11 passes for 64 yards. The previous season, Flutie started all 16 games for the Chargers. He had 294 completions in 521 attempts for 3,464 yards, with 15 touchdown passes and 18 interceptions. The attempts, completions and yards all represented career highs. Flutie, who has also played in the CFL, has appeared in 78 games in the NFL and started 60 of them. He has completed 1,061 of 1,936 passes for 13,313 yards, with 76 touchdown passes and 64 interceptions.
