Punch Out! Memories

Recommended Posts

Guest Plushy Al Logan

My opinions on all the boxers:

Glass Joe: If you lose to him, you should never be allowed near a video game system.

Von Kaiser: See Glass Joe

Piston Honda: See Glass Joe for first fight, but actually fights in second fight

Don Flamenco: Shittiest boxer in the game, but greatset boxer in the world in second fight.

King Hippo: Funny fat guy who no-sells, kind of reminds me of the Big Show.

Great Tiger: His magic sucked

Bald Bull: Punch Out! equivalent of Bradshaw

Soda Popinski: I never beat Vodka Drunkensi

Mr. Sandman: How do you beat him?

Super Macho Man: He was funny when I was younger

Mike Tyson: See Mr. Sandman

Also, I could have sworn that Bear Hugger in the second one was John Tenta.

Wow, the memories... although I'm totally blanking on the sandman. What did he look like, who was his clone, and what was his gimmick?

I think I beat Super Macho Man like once or twice, but retired from the sport before I ever got to defeat Iron Mike. I did last a round though with Tyson, i believe.

I remember I could beat everyone but Tyson. Macho Man was pretty hard after that super tornado punch he does after you knock him down, and I would be dizzy after he did it thats how I would get knock down. But I eventually learn how to beat him. Now, I have to do is beat Tyson. Someone said they couldn't beat Sandman, he basically no sells in the 1st round and it usually took me to beat him in the 3rd round. Move away from his haymaker punches and work on his lower body thats his weak spot.

Only beat Tyson once, and it was by decision.

Of course, I took the easy route, using the code to skip right to Tyson.

How do you beat Bald Bull? I've been playing the game like mad and each time I get to him, he uses that damn Bull Charge, then beats me by decision.

If you time your punch right (body punch) you can counter the charge big time.

EDIT: I'm talking about the super punch out bald bull, sorry.

The guy that always pissed me off in SPO was the old guy in the special circuit, I could never get him down for even one round.

I remember Super Macho Man being a tad on the hard side on Super Punch Out even with a Game Genie...

I had so much trouble getting the timing down on Super Macho Man's discus punches.

IIRC, the Mike Tyson's Punch-Out version of Mr. Sandman can be beaten by punching him once in the face after a dodge then attacking his body while he's stunned. Only threat I can remember was his flurry of uppercuts that hurt big time if they connected. It's been a long time since I played, so I'm probably wrong.

Renegade, Hoi Quarlow from Super Punch Out is indeed a bitch with that stick and his f'n backfist that gets me every time. I just wanted to kick the TV when he gave me his old man laugh after beating me.

"Mike Tyson's Punch Out":

Great Tiger always kicked my ass when I was a little kid. Then again, I was lucky when I got that far. Before I put away the NES (at age 9), Glass Joe was defeating me with remarkable speed. I knew then that it was time to let it go.

When Glass Joe can hand you your ass, that's pretty pathetic. I love how when you're fighting him, he steps back to taunt, and then you hit him in the face and KNOCK HIS ASS OUT!

Ditto. Even with an emulator, I can't beat this guy. His patterns are simply the hardest to memorize, that I can recall from both console versions.

According to my official nintendo Guidebook, Mike tyson CANNOT be beaten by decision

Well, I didn't KO him. Were there TKO's in the game?

It is going back like 15 years, so maybe my memory is a little fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure it was by decision. Hmmm...

If you get three knockdowns in a round, you win by TKO. Tyson has a lot of endurance, though, so knocking him down three times in one round would be pretty tough.

I always had the most trouble with Super Macho Man. Sandman's pretty easy once you realize that you have to hit him once in the face and then go to the body, and Tyson's not too bad if you can get past the 90 seconds of dynamite punches, but Super Macho Man's spin punches are just nasty. When he'd do seven or eight of them, I'd always mess up the timing and go down.

I have a lovely rom, called "Nude Punch Out". The only boxer in the game not totally naked is King Hippo... thankfully. Little Mac is also fully clothed.

I don't know how many of you are in college, but in a college dorm room, someone will ALWAYS have an NES. It's like a fuckin' rule. We played this game a lot my Fresh year (2 years ago) and I got really good. I can beat Super Macho Man without getting hit, and I once destroyed Tyson but lost the decision (because you can't win it). Tyson is tough, but his super punches only last for the first 1:30 and then he's normal, albeit very f'n hard. I love punch out. And the person who said punch Sandman in the face and then go to the stomach is 100% correct.

I've beaten everyone in Super Punch Out, Minus Nick and Rick Bruiser.

But I can't beat Don F'n Flamenco (Sp?) in The original!

I've beaten Super-Punch Out without getting hit once. As for the NES version,I can't make it past Super Macho Man.And how in the hell are you supposed to beat Mike Tyson? It's impossible to hit him.

SPO is one of the easiest games ever. But Punch Out is much tougher. If King Hippo didn't have a bandage on his belly nobody would have EVER beat him. You can showcase the injury like that.

Punch him once. He'll block it. Dodge the Uppercut and jack him in the Jaw

Super Macho Man is a lot harder than Mike Tyson. Tyson's actually pretty easy once you learn the patterns, and recognize that he flashes before he throws those huge uppercuts. If you can dodge him for the first half of Round 1, you should be in good shape. I typically TKO him in the second round, occasionally the third, when playing on an emulator, and I managed to duplicate that playing on an actual NES about a year or so ago.

I never played Super Punch Out.

Edit: Sometimes, I suck at typing.

When I was a kid, the farthest I ever got was Soda Popinski.

Now that I'm older, wiser, and have access to an emulator, I can dominate both Punch Outs.

And yes, Super Macho Man is harder than Tyson. Took me forever to get the timing right on his spins.

Did anyone else have the Punch Out without Mike Tyson? He wasn't there for some reason, and the last boss was "Mr. Dream".

Yes, this was for NES.

No, I am not drunk.

You would be correct. There was a version created just called "Punch Out!" in the dying days of the NES. Mike Tyson's name and likeness were eliminated in later version and replaced with the fictional Mr. Dream after Tyson either lost his title or got incarcerated. I'm inclined to believe that the latter is the correct reason.
