The Best Animation in Cartoon Ever

Recommended Posts

Guest Prototype450

I think i would have to say the Batman cartoons. They were just awesome.

The orginal Superman cartoons(Im talking Max Fleischer) had GREAT animation. I think they traced over real people or something like that. That's why it looks so realistic. In a way, it was a version of motion capture.

The old Superman cartoons and The Lion King fight it out in my mind for best animation.

If we're going with traditional animation I've always been a big fan of Don Bluth's darker and grittier stylized animation. The Rats of Nimh is a greatly underrated film and an animation triumph for the time.

Overall:Astroboy. I was blown away when I found out this was made in the 60's.

Honourable Mentions: Akira, Princess Mononoke.

American: I like the family guys animation. Mission Hill is pretty fucking, as is undergrads. Simpsons Season 3 animation was awesome. Was transformers american?

X-Men (mid 90s) was a very vibrant cartoon with lots of colours until the last few episodes of the series which looked different for some reason.

I was hoping anime would dominate this thread but oh well, anyway, my vote is for Cowboy Bebop, unrivaled in their use of shadows and fighting animations.

Bebop, Akira, and Mononoke get my votes as far as anime goes.

American stuff, I'd say Batman:TAS and Beyond(a very underrated show, IMO). The mid-90's Spider-Man and X-Men toons were also drawn greatly.

The Justice League on Cartoon Network. The animation is great. The characters are true to the books(basically). And the story lines are great. Almost all edisodes are two parters. I have to say this is one of the best cartoon series out now, animation included. Very close to the best animation ever.

If the thread is about American Cartoons, I'd have to say that Batman: The Animated Series is probably the best one.

Special mention would have to go to the Galaxy Rangers of old. That series was awesome. It gave any foreign series a good run for its money.

I love the animation on "Thundercats". It's simply beautiful, detailed stuff. As good as it gets... Well, can't forget "Transformers", of course.

I also mark for "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Justice League". Did a lot of the same people work on both shows?

I like Monkey Punch's animation style for Lupan III, also Fist of the North Star and Akira for Japanese style.

As for American cartoon I have to go with the Batman TAS and Beyond shows along with Spawn from HBO and The Maxx from MTV.

Of course Sponge Bob and Ren & Stimpy rule all in Nicktoon landscape.

Best: BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM

Blows away 90% of all anime, AND has the all-important "coherant plot" that so many of those are lacking.

For Kids: THE LION KING

Just perfect.

Anime: ASTRO BOY

Rules it, old-school.

Perhaps you should watch more anime, as most have coherent plots. Or they may just not be to your taste. Whichever.

Though, yes, most of Dini's stuff has come out wonderfully. I still say The Simpsons is the zenith of American animation, which is both a happy thought and a sad one.

"The Simpsons" aren't freakin' great, but there are far worse things out there. At least they look like people.

What was the name of the cartoon that used to be on MTV? "Aeon Flux" or something like that? Or maybe that is "The Maxx"... It's hard to remember.

Whatever it was, I think that it was pretty "wicked", so to speak. I was only a little kid when I was still on, though, so I don't have a clue.

OMG GOD, GALAXY RANGERS! I haven't heard that name for years.

American:

The Maxx, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Sea Lab 2021 and Johnny Quest.

Foreign: Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, AKIRA.

I liked The Head a LOT more than The Maxx on those Oddities series.

The first season of The Head was excellent.

The second was horrible (well, they DID have a pro-wrestling episode :) )

Futurama's is really good. I hate the simpsons current style though (which is odd, cause they are basically the same).

Simpsons Season 3 has killer animation.

EDIT: I misread the title.

Disney usually has the best animation, I particularly like Bebop's animation too.

Best overall: Batman: The Animated Series. Simply perfection. Nothing beats it in terms of writing, animation, voice acting, style and overall storytelling. Arguably the best translation of Batman to the art of film / television.

Honorable mention: Disney's "Gargoyles", a show that was remarkable and ahead of its time 10 years ago, and is STILL impressive today.

Well, it hasn't been mentioned yet, but Clerks: The Animated Series is one of my favorites.
