Guest Kingpk Report post Posted February 18, 2003 I believe it means only emergency and snow clearing vehicles should be the only vehicles on the road and that all non-essential state workers should stay home from work.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 18, 2003 Well that's bullshit...I've been driving all day...and we're in a Local Emergency...
Guest DrTom Report post Posted February 18, 2003 A State of Emergency qualifies the declaring state for federal aid in terms of disaster recovery, emergency infrastructure repairs, emergency services, etc. It also activates the state's National Guard, who will assist police and other emergency teams in getting around and carrying out their duties. The Guard's Hum-vees are damn uncomfortable to ride in, but there's a not a freaking place they won't go. Also, road travel is to be restricted to emergency vehicles and people driving who have some emergency. In fact, the governor here banned all non-emergency traffic from the roads last night, since the plows and salt trucks were having trouble getting around with so many people getting stuck on the roads. The ban was lifted at 4 AM this morning. NCM, main roads are fine here today (I drove around looking for a store that was actually open earlier), and side roads are getting there, so it's possible the airport could reopen tomorrow. If not, Wednesday is a certainty.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted February 19, 2003 We got 27.5" in Boston. At least this time the Governor didn't put the state under Marshal Law for a week (no driving, no private plowing, etc...) like Dukakis did in '78. Thank God we have a Republican Governor. Common sense works wonders for my sanity.
