Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted February 17, 2003 I didn't care for the 300th episode at all. It seemed completely built around the idea of using Tony Hawk and nothing else. Having Bart divorce his parents would have been better used about 5 years ago and the baby stink breath premise was just retarded. Now 301 was pretty good. I liked the use of George Plimpton and using the spelling bee to point out how flash often wins out over substance in sports and life is classic on the sly Simpsons. I also felt it had more laugh out loud moments. Lisa's face on Mount Springfield was a bit weird, especially since there was no gag with it to go out on. It almost seemed like they were desperate for an ending and just tossed that on at the last minute. "Dah,dah, dah and a hot plate!"
Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted February 17, 2003 I liked the 300th episode. The knock on the Butterfinger ad, the Requiem take off, and the Viagra commercial, all were vintage Simpson's. I tend not to compare the new ones to the old ones. I also liked the Spelling Bee one as well. That to me was good.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted February 17, 2003 I didn't care for the 300th episode at all. It seemed completely built around the idea of using Tony Hawk Celebrities should only be playing someone else (Devito), or have a cameo appearance (George, and Ringo). Guest godthedog Report post Posted February 17, 2003 I like the Simpsons MORE now. I hate the "Don't have a cow, man" era of stuff. It wasn't funny at all. I don't care about their characters, if I laugh, I laugh. the "don't have a cow, man"/"don't blame me, i didn't do it" era was over by the second or third season. the golden age of the simpsons didn't really start until after that stuff was more or less over, nobody's talking about those episodes being vintage simpsons. in fact, i think it's that much more of a credit to the writers that they consciously went AGAINST the things that had made it such a phenomenon and turn it into something different completely. Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted February 17, 2003 Personally, I'd place season one Simpsons at the same level as what they're doing now. They're equally funny to me. And lest we forget, most of us loved season 1 when it was new... cause it was different. If the current season occured in a vacuum, we'd probably love it too. The Simpsons are a part of my childhood, a part of my life, and I'll never really hate them. I'm not going to condemn them for failing to reach an impossibly high bar that they themselves set. I just take it for what it is.
Guest Mole Report post Posted February 18, 2003 If I laugh more than once, and am entertained for 30 minutes, then the show was good. 301 was better though.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted February 18, 2003 Did anyone else when they were watching all the Blink-182/Tony Hawk stuff think about sad parallels to the Poochie episode?

Well, what are some examples of episodes you'd put in their golden age? We might actually agree on this, but I've never seen anyone really come out and say "Episode x, Now THERE's where they were doing it right."
Guest Army Eye Report post Posted February 18, 2003 It goes beyond how time you laugh during a certain show. I still laugh at times during the show. I just hate what they've done to the show's premise, and too the character themselves. They've ruined the entire Simpson family. Exactly. Some older episodes are just as unfunny, but the new ones are downright frustrating to watch because they haven't stayed true to the characters at all. And the use of the celebrities.. ugh. It used to be a celebrity would have a brief cameo and they'd usually be pretty funny. Now the entire episodes are built around the celebrities. When this first became abundantly clear was, I think the Kim Basinger/Alec Baldwin one. Or maybe the Mel Gibson one. I don't remember which came first. Those episodes had a few laughs, especially the Mel Gibson one, but they still absolutely sucked. There isn't a more blatant shark jump than needing wacky hi-jinks with celebrities every week to keep the show funny. The Simpsons family used to be funny on its own; it didn't need that shit. The week I stopped watching for good was that N-Sync debacle. That was the most awful thing I've ever seen in my life. No laughs, INCREDIBLY contrived celebrity tie-in, (Bart/Milhouse/Nelson/Ralph in a boy band? WTF????), and basically everyone was completely out of character. I really wish they would put an end to this show. I'm not watching it now, but they just keep producing more junk that will eventually turn up in syndication and it will be harder and harder to see the actual good episodes. Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted February 22, 2003 I miss the Cycling Repeating Thoughts bit. They should do that more often. "I've sold monorails to Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook." "Is there a chance the track cold bend?" "I call the big one Bitey." and of course, "Dental plan!" "Lisa needs braces." "Dental plan!" "Lisa needs braces." "Dental plan!" "Lisa needs braces."
