Guest Shawn 5 Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 I'm a huge metal head, but lately I've been going to dance clubs with friends and have really been digging the techno I've heard. I want to get some cd's, but I have no clue of what to get. If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. Also, could someone let me know the differences between techno, rave, trance, & dance music. They may be all the same, but like I said I'm clueless. Thanks.
Guest KingOfOldSchool Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 http://www.thesmartmarks.com/forums/index....42b648f431f058f There's my old topic on the subject. There aren't any particular cd recommendations, but some artists are listed, which can get you started.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 And I can recommend more that I've discovered since then. For now though, I'll tell you the difference between the types. Techno: Generic term for electronic music that is less than 50% accompanied by singing. Rave: See Techno. Trance: Bare-bones techno, very few vocals, easy to pick apart layer-by-layer, what most people assume all of techno is, because of its repetitive nature. The trained ear can pick up on the subtleties that show it isn't nearly as repetitive as people think. Dance: Electronic music with more than 50% singing. What is Love?, etc. A Night at the Roxbury-type stuff. If you ever see anything labeled "DnB" or "Drum n' Bass" AVOID IT. It's just random noise over a supposed bassline. Now, new DJs I've discovered. DJ Mystic - Does a lot of Happy Hardcore stuff, which is upbeat, heavy-bass material. Either has a lot of singing or none. Download "Open Your Eyes" for an example of his work. George Acosta - the KING of Trance in America. Find "King of Clubs" and "Exhale" (which might be listed as by System F, but Acosta helped make it) for examples. Hit me up on AIM or whatnot if you want more. EDIT: That Homestar Runner cartoon is sort of right but sort of wrong. Only a small fraction of techno is actually like that with the quotes and whatnot, I generally avoid stuff that sounds like what he was making fun of, because it isn't that good. And you can drink glowstick liquid with no problems. Hell, your urine glows if you do.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Don't necesarily avoid drum n bass completely... it's just a love it or hate it style, at least give it one shot, you might like it. Try Roni Size... he's one of the best in that genre.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 IDRM is correct, go ahead and try it. It really is a love it or hate it genre. Until I find something to make me think otherwise, I hate it. I might have to check out that Roni Size, I've heard of him.
Guest Nevermortal Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 You can really drink glow sticks? Color me surprised.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Not ALL of them. Make sure they're non-toxic first. Most are these days anyway.
Guest Nevermortal Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Spoon, would you classify Aphex Twin as techno or trance?
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Aphex Twin ain't no Trance. I'm not quite sure what they are, to be honest.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Not they, Kotz, it's one guy. You should have asked me, I'm the resident Aphex fanboy. He could be classified as experimental, digital hardcore, drill n bass, ambient or dark ambient depending on the piece.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 I automatically call him "they" because of the Twin in the name. Reflex.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 By the way, if you want to hear Aphex Twin as close to mainstream techno as he gets, listen to "Didgeridoo". That was a track he did for a friend to play at the end of raves, to wear the ravers out and get them to go home. It's fast, just under 155bpm.
Guest Eyeball Kid Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 This is typically not my bag, though I've found myself digging Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. The latter's Music Has the Right to Children is particularly sweet.
Guest razazteca Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Faithless - club dance music Massive Attack - british trip-hop Tricky - tripy acid drum n bass Prodigy - was one of the big groups of the 90s electroca push Chemical Brothers - the other big 90s electronic group DJ Icey - bass heavy techno
Guest Shawn 5 Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Thanks a lot for your help everyone. Now if you'll excuse me, it looks like I have some downloading to do.
Guest razazteca Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 must have songs are: Zombie Nation and Sandstorm
Guest Nevermortal Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 IDRM, what's the song where he put the mic in the blender?
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 That was something he did live. That set also included him dropping the tone arm on a sheet of sandpaper. It was supposed to be a one shot deal, but the club liked it, so he did it a few more times. To the best of my knowledge, it's never been formally recorded.
Guest RepoMan Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 A few recommendations: Kraftwerk really started the whole genre. Fairly minamalistic, but somehow has a good grove to it. It can sound a little dated, yet somehows stands up very well today. Computer World is very good, and Trans-Europe express got ***** from Rolling Stone. If you dig the 80s sound, check of Felix Da Housecat, good but very Euro-trashy for a guy from Chicago. If like a more popish sound with vocals, Trickle by Olive is very good. If you like trance, check out Pual Oakenfold, Carl Cox, or Sasha and Digweed. My highest recomendation is Leftism by Leftfield. Hands down the best album I've ever heard. Just be warned it takes atleat 3 listens to start to really enjoy it.
Guest razazteca Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 if you prefer the mix tape DJ style then get the Dirt Sessions by the Prodigy as it is a mix of classic hip-hop with some rock with a techno beat, it goes everywhere from Herbie Handcock to Janes Addition to UK Charlatons.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 I've thought of another recommendation. Speedy J. He can be very dark and strange at times. Get "Borax". It will blow your mind. If you like that, get "Balk Acid".
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Don't totally ignore the industrial stuff though. You said you dig metal, so it might come natural. Frontline Assembly Front 242 Skinny Puppy Laibach.. They've all got some good material.
Guest Cavi Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 George Acosta - the KING of Trance in America. Find "King of Clubs" and "Exhale" (which might be listed as by System F, but Acosta helped make it) for examples. I should note that while Acosta spun the record for his mix on Trance Nation America Two, System F (Ferry Corsten) and Armin Van Buuren were the ones responsible for creating the track. With that said, for trance, you may want to check out the aforementioned Van Buuren and Corsten, in addition to DJ Tiësto. They are my personal favorites.
Zorin Industries Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 I second Felix da Housecat, quality stuff. Also you might try: DJ Tiga: Great Techno and Electro DJ from Canada Miss Kitten and the Hacker: Their first album is the crown jewel of the electoclash scene Ellen Allien: German Techno and Electro Dj, very much like Tiga plus check out any releases from International DJ Gigolo records or Turbo Records
Guest saturnmark4life Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 I don't really know what sub-genre he goes under, but what I've heard from DJ shadow is swank.
Guest PlatypusFool Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Yup, DJ Shadow, Aphex Twin, Plaid and some Squarepusher, those are the best I've heard. Particularly 'Richard D. James' by Aphex Twin (fucking awesome songs, quite poppy in places, but just really, really high quality) and 'Rest Proof Clockwork' by Plaid (sounds like computer game music, must be good) are excellent albums. I 'spose those are more electronica, but you still want all of it.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 George Acosta - the KING of Trance in America. Find "King of Clubs" and "Exhale" (which might be listed as by System F, but Acosta helped make it) for examples. With that said, for trance, you may want to check out the aforementioned Van Buuren and Corsten, in addition to DJ Tiësto. They are my personal favorites. This is true. I decided to actually look this stuff up after I said it with intentions of going back and fixing my post, but Cavi already did it for me. Still, Acosta = American Trance Gawd. Digweed = Global Trance Gawd.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 Well, did you like the stuff we recommended?
Guest Shawn 5 Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 Actually I haven't had a chance to yet. My home Internet connection is fucked at the moment and that's where I do my downloading. I'm posting this at work right now. When (or if) I get the home connection up and running again, I'll be sure to let ya'll know what I thought of your recommendations. Thanks again everyone!
Guest Caliban Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 Check out the following if you get a chance as well... (song titles in parentheses) Underworld (Two Months Off, Born Slippy, Jumbo, King Of Snake, Cowgirl) Orbital (The Box, Chime) Daft Punk (Around The World, One More Time)
