I want to get some cd's, but I have no clue of what to get. If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. Also, could someone let me know the differences between techno, rave, trance, & dance music. They may be all the same, but like I said I'm clueless. Thanks. Techno: Generic term for electronic music that is less than 50% accompanied by singing. Rave: See Techno. Trance: Bare-bones techno, very few vocals, easy to pick apart layer-by-layer, what most people assume all of techno is, because of its repetitive nature. The trained ear can pick up on the subtleties that show it isn't nearly as repetitive as people think. Dance: Electronic music with more than 50% singing. What is Love?, etc. A Night at the Roxbury-type stuff. If you ever see anything labeled "DnB" or "Drum n' Bass" AVOID IT. It's just random noise over a supposed bassline. Now, new DJs I've discovered. DJ Mystic - Does a lot of Happy Hardcore stuff, which is upbeat, heavy-bass material. Either has a lot of singing or none. Download "Open Your Eyes" for an example of his work. George Acosta - the KING of Trance in America. Find "King of Clubs" and "Exhale" (which might be listed as by System F, but Acosta helped make it) for examples. Hit me up on AIM or whatnot if you want more. EDIT: That Homestar Runner cartoon is sort of right but sort of wrong. Only a small fraction of techno is actually like that with the quotes and whatnot, I generally avoid stuff that sounds like what he was making fun of, because it isn't that good. It was supposed to be a one shot deal, but the club liked it, so he did it a few more times. To the best of my knowledge, it's never been formally recorded. Guest RepoMan Report post Posted February 18, 2003 A few recommendations: Kraftwerk really started the whole genre. Fairly minamalistic, but somehow has a good grove to it. It can sound a little dated, yet somehows stands up very well today. Computer World is very good, and Trans-Europe express got ***** from Rolling Stone. If you dig the 80s sound, check of Felix Da Housecat, good but very Euro-trashy for a guy from Chicago. If like a more popish sound with vocals, Trickle by Olive is very good. If you like trance, check out Pual Oakenfold, Carl Cox, or Sasha and Digweed. My highest recomendation is Leftism by Leftfield. Hands down the best album I've ever heard. James' by Aphex Twin (fucking awesome songs, quite poppy in places, but just really, really high quality) and 'Rest Proof Clockwork' by Plaid (sounds like computer game music, must be good) are excellent albums.
