Guest Karnage Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Are any fellow Canadians really annoyed with the amount of hockey games TSN simulcasts off ESPN? I don't really mind with NFL or MLB coverage but ESPN's hockey commentary is horrible. Plus it looks like TSN cares more about Canada's other sport curling rather than hockey with the way they show nonstop coverage of the tournament of hearts. If they can afford all those promos with the players, they could afford sending their own camera crew and commentators.
Guest starvenger Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Yeah, I was annoyed with the curling coverage when I was in T.O. on the weekend, but curling = ratings so I can't blame TSN for showing it nonstop.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Who did commentary for the game?
Guest gthureson Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Isn't TSN owed by ESPN these days? If so, then its a pretty simple corporate decision. Save the money by only having one broadcast team if ESPN is carrying the same game.
Guest starvenger Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 ESPN owns about 10% of TSN, with Bell Globemedia owning the rest. ESPN would own more, but CRTC regulations prevent that. They actually wanted to rename the network ESPN Canada but realized that you can't make a "Toronto Sports Network" joke out of that and left it as TSN. However ESPN did have enough influence to change the TSN logo to resemble ESPN's and change the news show from SportsDesk to SportsCentre (note the spelling).
Guest treble charged Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 As for the curling coverage, you have to remember that that stuff is probably dirt cheap to produce, where sending a team to some city in the States is not.
Guest Karnage Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 They could always use ESPN's camera and put their own overlays on it and have them do commentary from that giant place where Duthie walks around like a jackass.

Guest starvenger Posted February 22, 2003 Report Posted February 22, 2003 curling does not = ratings. don't know where you got that one from. Canadian media outlets. Hey, I never said it was popular in the US...
Guest evilhomer Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Yes, I remember many a Monday night when I would tune in at 9:00 to hear "Hurry hard.... Haaaaaard", followed by a great deal of swearing from my mouth. It's a Canadian thing, many of us like curling. Do not ask me why.
Guest starvenger Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Yes, I remember many a Monday night when I would tune in at 9:00 to hear "Hurry hard.... Haaaaaard", followed by a great deal of swearing from my mouth. I have to admit though, there's something intruiging about it when you hear the women saying that. Well, the lookers anyway...
