Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 20, 2003 Oh please, good brutal death and grind bands are full of technical skill. There are bands that suck in every genre. Teenagers in garages nationwide are capable of playing Metallica's stuff, I'd like to see someone try to tackle some DEP. Like 'em or not, guys like that are a whole lot more than just fast. Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted February 20, 2003 Upon listening to some Shadow's Fall....I've come to this conclusion...THEY SOUND A LOT LIKE METALLICA. A helluva fucking lot. Not that its a bad thing.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted February 21, 2003 I'd rather a modern-day metal band sound like one of the greatest (arguable) and most influential (unarguable) acts in metal history, since it seems every other new band just wants to be Cannibal Corpse or In Flames or Slayer. Guest Respect The 'Taker Report post Posted February 21, 2003 This'll piss Corey off - Who the fuck are Shadows Fall? Doesn't really piss me off so much as disappoint me. UYI, I've been whoring out the awesomeness of Shadows Fall since the transition from EZ Board. It's kind of "my thing," ya know? You might dig 'em. If you like Metallica, you'll definitely dig 'em. They're kinda like the Metallica of the extreme metal scene: catchy songs, decent lyrics that are both genius and stupid (depending on your view, as with all lyrics), classical influence, and a great blend of semi-complex and uber-easy riffs that just kick tons of ass. I'd suggest downloading the following 6 tracks, 2 off of each studio album (I'll tell you the album name as well), to help you get acquainted with them. If you like them, it's all good. If not, well then that's your personal taste...just don't tell me they suck SONG - ALBUM "Purity" - Somber Eyes To The Sky "Somber Angel" - Somber Eyes To The Sky "Crushing Belial" - Of One Blood "To Ashes" - Of One Blood "Stepping Outside The Circle" - The Art Of Balance "The Art Of Balance" - The Art Of Balance con: OzzFest is at the Twat Center again? FUCK...that venue sucks. Why won't they just hold it outdoors? Outdoor festivals are ALWAYS good. Or, best yet...FLEET CENTER or WORCESTER CENTRUM?! I downloaded 'To Ashes' and realised that I actually HAVE heard them, or at least this song, which I dig. I'm going to get some of the other stuff you recommended later tonight, hopefully it is just as good. Many thanks for the suggestions. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 21, 2003 I can tackle DEP... tackling Dream Theater=God! I'm assuming you're a guitarist, and if that's the case, you are indeed correct. John Petrucci is on a whole different level.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted February 22, 2003 Regarding Mike Patton and DEP's version of 'come to daddy', I wasn't aware that guitars could be played that fast. I'm talking about the bit with the screaming, as it builds back into the main riff. Good GOD.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted February 22, 2003 Guitarist and Bassist AoO.... Though I don't play DT bass songs...too poor for 6-string
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 23, 2003 6 strings is two too many, unless you can actually do something with them, like Dream Theater, or Primus. I'd like DT so much more if it weren't for the vocals. Everyone in the band is so fucking good at what they do that it's insane, but then the words come in and just kill it for me. Don't get me wrong, the guy can sing, but it's not on the level of everything else they do. They're all classically-trained maestros, aren't they? A prog-maniac friend of mine mentioned that to me, although I wasn't sure as to the validity of that statement.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted February 24, 2003 Yep. All went to Juliard, I think.
Guest Respect The 'Taker Report post Posted February 24, 2003 I'm with Agent on this one, Art of Balance seems to rip off Fade To Black in an exceptionally obvious way. Sure there is no shame in imitating greatness, but that will never make you anything but a follower. UYI - Leader ::Shanks Agent::
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 24, 2003 I am immortal, and my wounds do not bleed. Shanking me will only make the imminent sodomy worse on your part, UYI.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted February 24, 2003 I really don't see why everybody thinks "Art Of Balance" is a cheap knock-off of "Fade To Black." The only REAL similarities are in the song structure (slow, classical guitar for verses, heaviness and power chords for choruses, and then combine the two for the end of the song). Many, many others song (both before and after "Fade To Black" ) have done the same thing. The lyrics are both on different topics, too. "Fade To Black" is blatantly about suicide, whereas "The Art Of Balance" is about life itself.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Long-running Canadian metallers VOIVOD — who currently feature in their ranks former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted — have secured a slot on the second stage at this year's Ozzfest. An official press release is expected shortly. VOIVOD's self-titled CD is due on March through Newsted's Chophouse label in association with Surfdog Records. A month-long headlining U.S. tour is scheduled to kick off on April 10. Ozzfest 2003 will begin on June 28 in San Antonio, Texas. 2003
