Dj Quik: I believe he is overlooked and produced some good albums.

 

Dr. Dre: Where would the West Coast be without him?

 

Swizz Beats: Produced hits like Ruff Ryders Anthem for DMX and some classic albums for Def Jam and Ruff Ryders

 

The Neptunes: who doesnt like them

 

My least favorite:

 

Master P: a look at No Limit records today and you can only shake your heads.

 

Cash Money producers: give it up guys, your sound is tired

 

Jermaine Dupree: Never really felt him since he only really does kiddie rap

While I'm not exactly the fan of the genre I used to be, here are my picks:

DJ U-Neek - His work on Bone's Creepin..., E. 1999 Eternal, and The Art of War is just pure excellence. Too bad, sort of like BTNH themselves, his heat has totally died and is nowhere to be found.

 

Dr. Dre, Daz Dillenger, & Battlecat - My favorite west coast producers.

 

DJ Premier - Premo is quite possibly my favorite out of the east coast.

 

Timbaland - I have never really cared for Tim's work with Missy, but his stuff with Aaliyah is classic in my mind.

 

Least Favorite

 

Neptunes - I liked some of their early work with Nore, as the sound was fresh, but now, I feel it's just played. Guys need to learn some new production and arrangement techniques or at least get some new synths as they use the same sounds on a lot of the tracks they produce.

I'm a huge Dan "The Automator" Nakamura mark. His work, particularly with Lovage and Del the Funky Homosapien, is off the hook. Dre's awesome too - I never really felt him as a rapper but he was always a slick producer. Plus, especially as old school goes, it doesn't get any better than Rick Rubin; even though it's not as ground-breaking today, in retrospect its still really solid production that for the most part still holds up today.

 

I actually haven't heard any downright bad production in a while - then again, I haven't listened to the radio so I haven't heard any hip-hop other than what I or my housemates own anyway. And we only own the good shit. I guess for me what would qualify as "bad production" isn't even really that bad, but standard stuff that doesn't stand out.

Favorites: Dr. Dre, RZA. How can you not be the best when you're producing credits include Straight Outta Compton, The Chronic, and Doggystyle, and all the Wu-Tang albums.

 

Least Favorites: Puffy (even though I like B.I.G.'s stuff, esp. Ready to Die), Irv Gotti, Irv Gotti, Irv Gotti, and Irv Gotti (even though I liked DMX's debut).

 

Here's hoping that a west coast gangsta rap revival will occur soon and wipe out all the pussy rappers out of existence. Ja Rule, I'm looking at you.

I'm not gonna pretend I'm knowledgeable about any of this, but I fucking hate puffy, because like Madonna he's getting insanely rich due to other artists, whilst being completely useless himself. I mean OK, madonna has had a handful of decent songs, but nothing to justify having such a long career.

I'd love to praise Dre, but he's become a parody of himself of late. He reminds me of when Oasis started repeating the same riffs and chord progressions about three records in.

 

I actually think Jermaine Dupri (well, Brian Michael Cox anyway) and Irv Gotti are pretty great at what they do. The Neptunes blow.

 

The next guys up are Kanye West, Hi-Tek and Cool & Dre (that Fat Joe song "All I need" is tight). But I really want to know what happened to Shondrae...Ludacris' "What's Your Fantasy" was like some wild tech-house song before there even was such a thing.

Before anybody gets in anti Puffy mode let me me clear this up. there is a difference between Puffy the rapper and Puffy the producer.

 

Puffy the producer has done many things:

Produced a mutli platinium album for Mary J Blige in 1992

 

Produced 2 Classic Biggy Smalls albums in 1994 and 1997

 

Produced all of the 112 albums

 

Produced many hits for various for multi-platinuim albums for artists like Mariah Carey and Baby of Cash money

 

Produced all the albums for all of his past and present Baby Boy recording artist

 

Yes Puffy has his Hitmen but the ultimately produces each and every Bad Boy album. You can bag on puffy as a rapper but to deny him as a great producer is rather asaine to me.

Dr. Dre is probably No.1 for me, but I also like Swizz Beats, Timbaland and Puffy (sue me).

 

I used to like the Neptunes, but after Pherrell decided he wanted to be in everyone's video I slowly grew to despise him (and them by default).

The one thing that I really hate about Neptunes produced tracks is that Pharrell sings in a fair amount of them. It's certainly a unique voice, but I do not care for it at all.

Dre: still brings it

 

Timbaland: His stuff never seems tired and provides the club banger joints.

 

Primo: His beats is always hot eventhough their mostly for east coast style, but he is consistent.

 

Just Blaze: His soulful samples are pretty good, and they usually go well with the rappers subject matter. I liked what he did to the NBA Live 2003 soundtrack.

 

Kanye West: He's going to be a big name producer, he can do it all, supply beats and match the style to any rapper from Jay-Z to Talib Kweli.

 

Mannie Fresh: He's the reason why Cash Money is still around, I think he needs to work outside of Cash Money and work with other artists.

 

Jazze Pha: Another reason why Cash money is still around, provides hot beats for the South.

 

Don't like or So So:

P.Diddy: Doesn't make the beats himself the Hitmen does that, he might add a horn and adlib and thats it.

 

Swizz Beats: his sample free formula is getting tired fast, he peaked about 97-99. But he's getting better lately.

 

Irv Gotti: Trying to sound like Bad Boy of the 2K. Im not a fan of Lazy Sampling

 

Eminem: His beats are ok, but his stuff is getting predictable thou

 

Neptunes: They need to take a break, stuff is getting predictable a bit and all over the place right now.
