Rvd, ic title, glass ceilings...

Recommended Posts

Guest Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye

While considering the fastest way to get a hold of Lucy so I could send her to Rob Black, I stumbled on a much more constructive thought.

RVD won the ic title at X8. Where to now for our fearless adventurer? Obviously he ain't gonna be moving up the card for a while, He's curtain jerking, He's fended off almost all his foes, does this mean he's just gonna hang around the mid card being a looooong running IC champ?

Now, does the IC title get devalued by having it's holder be a man who the fans want to see higher in the card? Basically a wrestler who is holding the title basically as a statement of his current upward potential and the limit of how high he's gonna get pushed?

Example: RVD was ecw television champ for like 23 months. He broke his leg. Rhino was given the belt and no one gave a shit about the tv title.

They stopped caring about the title, they only cared about RVD. I fear that this may happen with the IC title.

Endless feuds against Regal, Storm, Edge, or the title are all well and good. Until the fans only see the two wrestlers, not the title they are competing for.

I know I'm predicting here...basically typing what i'm thinking off the top of my head...and I make no guarantees as to accuracy, coherency, or anything else of the nature when this happens.

I see what you're saying but i think RVD can bring legitimacy to the IC title where Regal gave it none. And when he does lose it, it can be to a successful midcard heel ala Rock 1997-98 or HTM. RVD will still be over, the title will gain prestige and some genuine heels can be created in the process.

All this HHH hating tonight has got me in nay sayer mode, and I'm just thinking that a lot of fans may lose interest because IMO, RVD has already surpassed IC level.

I do agree with you though about the title possibly getting elevated in this whole process aswell.

Well, compare RVD's reign with HHH's reign from 2001. RVD will not see the main event scene for a good long time. HHH used the belt as a trophy while he was in the main. with the dwindling prospects of great wrestling action we were accustomed to in 2000-2001, we now need to pray for a strong midcard to keep us workrate rats happy. RVD can provide that along with Jericho, Angle, and Booker who will all be considered JTTS for the forseeable future.

Carried by the midcard is fine by me.

Personnaly a lot of times i dont give a #### where the work comes from. As long as its there...somewhere...and it comes when we expect it to. HHH can have his lazy world title presidency, I'll come for the JTTS. HUZZAH!

And all looked hopeful again.

yay...100 posts closer to world domination.

Exactly! Another example of how the WWF looks more like WCW everyday. Now the smarks are looking to the midcard while the main event crumbles.

(as for the posts, I'm 29 posts into a hardcore title reign and Molly Holly hasn't stolen it from me yet! Whazzupwitdat?)

"Yeah, but what she finds out, hurts me!!"

kinda inspires the fear of god eh?

Lita needs to just stick to managing and ruining potentially good matches with her rana something or other.

Does anyone else remember back in summer of 2000 when Lita snapped off those ranas and moonsaults with amazing skill?  What the fuck happened to her?  Injuries maybe, drugs maybe, I dunno.

i think the overexposure of Jeff Hardy sloppiness was her undoing. It could be drugs but the WWF clearly does not need her tired act in the WWF.

####, instead of Jericho running with Steph, he should have Lita as his cheating sidekick. They can botch moves in unison!

I don't think a long RVD run would devalue the belt. With the talent in the lower card we could just rename the IC title the Smark Title really. RVD v Benoit in a month or so?

I pretty much agree, with the idea of RVD as a long running IC champion.  I don't care if he is ME over, so was the Ultimate Warrior and Ric Rude.  It makes the title more important, I think.

Let RVD have sustained feuds with Storm, Booker T, Tajiri, Christian, Edge, and guys like that.

But yes, the WWF is begining to look alot like mid/late 90s WCW.  But at least WWF has Jericho, Benoit, Angle, and even the Rock to keep the dinosaurs from completely ruling the earth.

Hopefully RVD will be in the Ric Flair portion of the split. I think there will be plenty of opponents for him to match up against. Kidman against RVD would be good. As well as some of the other cruiserweights.

I think that RVD is capable of having a good to great match with anyone EXCEPT the following:

Taker

Kane

Big Show

Regal

Bossman

Godfather

Goldust

That's about it.  I think he could even have a good match with friggin' TEST.

I actually think the RVD-Taker match at Vengeance was fairly good. Of course, it involved RVD bumping all over the place, but Taker worked hard enough there to make it good.

To add to Teke's list, I don't think he could get a good match out of Albert or Bull Buchanan either.

I liked RVD vs. Goldust from No Way Out.  That match stole the show, of course that isn't saying much for that PPV.

Taker

Kane

Big Show

Regal

Bossman

Godfather

Goldust

Let's see:  He and UT had a killer match at Vengeance I thought.  He and Regal had a good one last night at Mania.  He and Goldust had a decent match at No Way Out.  Actually he can get something out of anyone on this list except for Bossman....that is asking too much!

What people forget is that the ECW TV title lost its cred because NO ONE BEAT RVD.  If Heyman just jobbed him to Lynn finally and moved RVD to the world title things would have been fine in ECW.   When RVD got hurt and was stripped of the belt, there was no one to get that rub from having beaten him and ended his 23 month streak.

He should hold the IC for a nice long while, restore cred to it, and then lose it in an awesome match to Storm, Benoit, etc.  Just not Test, Regal, or Booker.....that is the Bermuda Triangle of heat killing.

When I say GOOD, I mean ***+ for the match.  In addition to that, I also mean that it's a MATCH and not a SQUASH, which disqualifies UT-RVD from Vengeance.

Of those I listed, RVD has had a **1/2 with Regal, a **1/2 or so with Goldust, and a **+ (unsure of exact rating) with Taker.  Those matches aren't BAD, but they're not necessarily GOOD either.

As for the Bermuda Triangle of killing heat, I agree with Regal and Test but not really Booker.  Booker has been screwed over since he arrived and never really got a chance to get over.  Looking like an idiot on national TV didn't help, either.

Trust me man. After you've been married for a year, the board is a safe haven away from the madness that is marriage.

Actually, I would go as far and say that the mid-card carried the WWF through one of it's strongest buy-rate, ratings, and drawing periods. You had a reason to watch the entire show. The upper-card drew people in, but the undercard kept people watching.

Who got squashed in the Vengeance match?

RVD carried most of the action...got more offensive moves...and lost...so who got squashed?

I would let RVD have a long run with the title. I don't think the WWF has a clue about what they're going to do with him. I could see RVD's first feud being against Angle or Jericho.

I think I used the term "squash" because it's a blanket term that is applicable to 90% of Taker's matches.  Maybe "booking stupidity" is another description, as Taker needed the Hardcore belt as much as Kane needed it the year before.  RVD could have jobbed it to another ex-ECW guy who needed a rub.
