Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted February 20, 2003 Source: ESPN.com Kontak may attempt to enter U.S. Women's Open -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A player with conditional status on the Nationwide Tour may try to go where no man has gone before -- the U.S. Women's Open. Former Canadian Tour Order of Merit winner Brian Kontak, 31, confirmed to the Golf Channel on Tuesday that he will attempt to qualify for the event, which is arguably the biggest on the women's golf calendar and will be played July 3-6 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore. Kontak told the Golf Channel: "I'm exploring the possibility. That's all I can say. But I'm dead serious about it." After Annika Sorenstam accepted a sponsor's exemption to become the first woman to play in a PGA Tour event in 58 years, Kontak is the first to seriously step forward with an intention to break the gender barrier going to other way. However, the USGA -- which runs the U.S. Women's Open -- requires any entrant be a female professional or female amateur with a USGA handicap index not exceeding 4.4. "We're going to try and work our way around it," Kontak said. Kontak fell short of his PGA Tour card this year in the final stage of Q-school last fall, gaining conditional status on the Nationwide Tour. PGA Tour rookie Chris Anderson, a friend of Kontak's, told the Golf Channel: "I think he wants the publicity. He's doing what a lot of guys talk about, but don't have the (guts) to do. He could look like a complete (fool), but what if he wins by 30?" Kontak has five career Canadian Tour victories and has played in events on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Hooters Tour. Why can't they just have some intergender events and be done with this?
Guest Downhome Report post Posted February 20, 2003 Ok, this right here... I don't agree with it at all, it's all fucking retarded to me. Why can't men have their thing and women have theirs at times?
Guest DrTom Report post Posted February 20, 2003 It's because everyone has to do everything. Heaven forfend someone doesn't feel included in an event, especially if it's obvious that event was never really designed to include them anyway.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted February 20, 2003 I'm just waiting until the LPGA tries to run an event at Augusta. That should be fun.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 20, 2003 IT'S TIME TO PICKET. I hope the NY Times runs 90+ articles over this discriminatory practice that this Good ol' Girls Club is doing. And that guy BETTER NOT have to tee off farther than the other women. = justice 4 all!. I don't have heroes, but if this guy follows through and gets mainstream coverage, he'll be one... Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 20, 2003 What did they say on PTI, Bob? I'm curious if this will get similar treatment in the media as that Augusta (sp?) joke was...
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted February 20, 2003 The black guy (I forgot his name) seemed to be in support of him while Kornheiser thought it was pretty stupid. I think they were treating it as a joke though
Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted February 20, 2003 I think this is hilarious. I will even find more funny if the guy doesn't even qualify for the next round. Tom Tolbert and Ralph Barbieri (KNBR 68) went off on all these scenerios of how this guy was going to get ripped on by all of his buddies. Giving him stuff like pink sweaters for X-mas and asking him to shoot from the red tees. Seriously, I don't even think this guy will be allowed to play, unless he gets a sex change operation and go through about three qualfying rounds. And even if does, is this something you really want to be known for? Wow, you beat a bunch of women, good going. And the black guy is named Craig Wilbon on PTI, FYI. Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted February 20, 2003 I would love it if the guy just crushed all of the female golfers and won by like 20 strokes. Then the rest of the nationwide male golfers join the tour and the women do not even make the cut. No more LPGA
Guest BRUCE Report post Posted February 20, 2003 Next we'll have black people trying to drive in NASCAR. This shit has to end!
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 20, 2003 VICIOUS INSENSITIVE STEREOTYPE BELOW... "Next we'll have black people trying to drive in NASCAR. This shit has to end!" If they pretend that the police are chasing them in a stolen car, they'll zoom past every car and win each race. I'd love to see some redneck in a Dixie hat cheering on this driver only to have his jaw drop when the driver gets out of his car at the end...
Guest DrTom Report post Posted February 20, 2003 I don't think he'll be allowed to compete, but if he is, he'd better damn skippy do well. If women are allowed to compete on the mens' tour, but not vice versa, then we're dealing with a double standard. Then again, double standards are nothing new when it comes to sports, or relations between the sexes. And the Black host of PTI is *Michael* Wilbon.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 20, 2003 FUCK, this guy's taking my idea for a movie. I have this brilliant screenplay I'm writing where a man fights the supreme court to participate in women's boxing, and goes 56-0 with 56 KOs, retiring as the champ, making him the single most successful, yet hated athlete in the history of professional sports. It's got everything, courtroom drama, sports drama, romance, comedy, blood...
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted February 20, 2003 He won't be allowed to play. He'd be the best golfer out there, and it would look bad if a guiy won a LPGA event, especially the Women's US Open.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted February 20, 2003 I think this intergender sports stuff is dumb. I don't mind it so much as far as the Sorenstam thing is concerned because they invited her freely, she never said "I'm too good for the LPGA, I think I can beat male golfers, let me play". But guys demanding to play in girls events and vice versa is dumb. Personally, I love it when someone runs their mouth off regarding intergender sports and gets schooled. For instance, a few years back at the Australian open, the Williams sisters boasted about how they could beat any man outside of the top 200 at least. So some no-name guy from Sweden took them up on it: he played 9 holes in the morning, had lunch and beers at the pub, then beat them each easily in the afternoon (something like 6-2, 6-1). That shut them up, for a bit anyway.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 21, 2003 My opinion -- Separate but equal. I'm so sick of women trying to get into men's professional sports. What REALLY pisses me off is that there have been a few chicks in the past that I remember playing in men's golf outings and getting to tee off from a shorter distance. And people wonder why I don't take the women's movement seriously...
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted February 21, 2003 I think this is the first time a women is playing in a men's event. I unerstand what your saying though. Another example is the lack of criticism directed at a women's team or player after a poor performance. Keith Van Horne was ripped last season, can you imagine any player from the New York WNBA team getting the same treatment.
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted February 22, 2003 They said on ESPN that this is the first time in some number of years(Close to 50 I think) that a woman has been in men's golf, not the first time ever.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted February 22, 2003 "I think this is the first time a women is playing in a men's event." Years ago back in Pittsburgh, there was this men's golf tourney and a woman entered and got to tee of at a much shorter distance. Some of the men rightfully complained and got ripped apart by the local media for being insensitive. That's why topics like this always grate me the wrong way. It's only sports though -- good think they don't have separate physcial requirements for the military and fire departments. Oh, wait. Nevermind...
