Lakers win THE BIG ONE

Recommended Posts

Guest GameCop

Earlier tonight, the Lakers beat the hottest team in the NBA, the Portland Trail-blazers, 92-84 at the Staples Center. Shaq was back for the first time in three games; he scored 24 points and made clutch free-throws down the stretch. Kobe, too, had another excellent game, scoring 40 points on 15-32 from the field. Kobe has scored 35+ points in the last twelve games and 40+ points in the last eight. Kobe is unequivocally the league's MVP up to this point.

How is he unequivocally the MVP? Just beacuse he has scored 40 points 8 straight times doesn't make you the MVP of the entire league. Most talented player in the league? Possibly. But the MVP is not for most talented, it's for the player most valuable to his team and Bryant isn't the most valuable player to his own team much less more valuable than McGrady, Duncan or Garnett are to their respective teams. I wouldn't say that Kobe is playing all that much better than McGrady is, but McGrady's team has been in the playoff hunt all year with far inferior teammates than Bryant has while Bryant couldn't sniff the playoffs until Shaq returned and stabalized the team.

Wow, 2 - 3 Weeks of 40 or more games and he's the MVP?

I find it funny that all of a sudden everyone has found a reason to jump back on the Kobe Bryant/Laker Bandwagon.

Where were you in October - December?

I've been a Lakers fan for almost my whole life and I was actually saying they'd pull through on this forum during their bad times this year. Even I have to say that Kobe as MVP is crazy. There are a bunch of players who pretty much carry their teams on their own for the entire season. Kobe gets a lot more opportunities than those guys because Shaq is on the team.

No denying that Kobe has had an incredible ot streak, but he's not MVP.

As for the Lakers winning the Title again I think it will be difficult and some of the role players are going to have to pick up the slack. Something that they haven't demonstrated that they are able to do on a consistent basis this year.

As for Kobe as MVP, he has a shot at it. The only people besides him that could win it is Garnett and Duncan. The Laker role players have been playng much better the second half of the season. Mark Madsen did a good job against Yao Ming and people like Fisher, Fox, Rush, and Horry have been playing better. This season has been hard on the role players since they are used to having Shaq and Kobe healthy in the same season and they were exposed this season. But come playoff time the role players always play well or well enough at least. As for a fourth championship, there my favorite to win it all and could be the first eight seed to win a championship of everything falls into place. It just so wide open this year. Not one team is dominating the field.

Isn't his team barely going to make the playoffs at this point?

Should the season end today, exactly.

I still want to know how a team with as much talent as the Lakers could possibly bring home the MVP Award. Kobe's hot now, sure, but tell me Shaq couldn't step up and do something similar if Kobe missed a couple of weeks due to injury.

And I still want to know where everyone is coming from with this Championship Bullshit. The Words "Lakers" & "Championship" couldn't even be put in the same Catergory about a month and a half ago.

They aren't even the best team in the West!

Kobe will (but not should) win the MVP if the Lakers make the playoffs just because he is doing it in flashy style. The most amazing thing is that everyone is raving over the scoring streak yet he still isnt even the leagues leading scorer so if scoring is all you need to win the award then he isn't even winning it that way.
