Clinton: Bono Succeeded Where I Failed

Recommended Posts

Guest MrRant

Good god.

Bill Clinton thinks Bono is a leader "we should follow in the new millennium."

The former president praised the lead singer of U2 Friday at a celebrity-packed reception honoring Bono's charitable work, most notably his efforts at promoting awareness of the AIDS epidemic and famine in Africa.

Clinton credited the rock star with helping close partisan gaps and getting Congress to pass a bill to provide debt relief for Africa.

"He did something I couldn't do: He convinced Jesse Helms (former Republican senator from North Carolina) to be for it," Clinton said, adding: "I love this man because he has a mind and a heart."

In accepting the award from the recording industry charity MusiCares, Bono talked about possible U.S. military action against Iraq.

"We do not need to make a martyr out of Saddam Hussein," said Bono, a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize last year. "It is not as simple as war or no war. These are complex problems, and we need complex solutions."

Besides Clinton, others feting Bono were New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, singer David Bowie and actor Robert De Niro.

Gwen Stefani, Mary J. Blige, B.B. King, Jimmy Fallon and Wynonna Judd were among those performing at the event.

You know, for such an intelligent man, Clinton was a total putz.

-=Mike --- And Clinton didn't make any decisions, he just went with the polls

Compared to Clinton, Bono's a regular Abe Lincoln.

Compared to Clinton, Koko the Gorilla is a Rhodes scholar.

Compared to Clinton, Caligula was chaste.

Compared ...

These are a bit too easy.

-=Mike --- Clinton --- Who combined the competence of Carter and Ford with the dignity of Nixon.

Bush Sr. has said some pretty crazy stuff too in the past few years, but since he's an ex-Prez and everything it's not really important and nobody ought to care.

Funny how that works.

Can you elaborate on that?

Sure, he could ignore Iraq for another 8 years.

"Nope, I don't see any problems ... I'm a good president ... people like me ... can I grab your boobs?"

Can you elaborate on that?

The guy was blown away by a supermarket scanner some years ago.

I think that's pretty sad, but he's an old ex-president now, and we must mind our manners and not care because he's served his term.

Meanwhile, Clinton's dog getting run over sparks jokes from Republicans.

But isn't going with the polls a good thing? I mean, the people are the driving force in this country.

"The guy was blown away by a supermarket scanner some years ago.

He was a politician for so many years -- they all become amazed by everyday devices we take for granted.

"Meanwhile, Clinton's dog getting run over sparks jokes from Republicans."

I'm sure there's a Chelsea joke in there, BUT I'M NOT TOUCHING IT!!!

"But isn't going with the polls a good thing? I mean, the people are the driving force in this country."

But not 1,000 randomly selected people that are asked several questions over the phone. I would have loved to have had this much media coverage around during the civil-rights era.

George Wallace: See? We shouldn't have integrated schools -- we took a poll that says 70 percent of those surveyed don't want them.

"I wish that Clinton would follow SONNY Bono's example and go skiing."

Reminds me of this one joke I heard:

Clinton meets the ghosts of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln. He asks the three what he can do to be a better president.

Washington: Tell the truth.

Jefferson: Tell the truth.

Lincoln: Go to the theater...

Lincoln Rocks

GH Bush being blown away by a scanner is not a big deal. If Carter's contribution would be not understanding how e-mail works people won't have a problem with the guy.

A President should have SOME beliefs of his own. Doing the right thing isn't always the popular decision.

Who says he didn't? He did what was right for America, IMO.

Then you imply, correctly I might add, that he had no personal integrity.

What? I never implied that. He had plenty of personal integrity. I think a President's first duty should be to do the right thing for America, not what he or she thinks is right.

Dead wrong. A good President has his own beliefs and the integrity to stick with them. If the people agree with him, he will be elected to make decisions. That's how representative democracy works.

He did have his own beliefs. He just did what was best for America. He listened to people and represented them as President should. He was with them, rather than above him (like some other Presidents).

Maybe, but doing the popular thing is always the right decision.

That is what they're elected for, after all.

Ok, Geroge H.W. Bush was VP from 1981 to 1989 and president from 89-93 and before that he was head of the CIA. Do you suppose that at some point during his Vice and Presidential terms they devleoped the scanner system? Do you know what the Secret Service would have to do to a Supermarket inorder for the VP or President to go into one? If you were unable to go to a Supermarket for at least 12 years don't you think you might have missed out on that one too?

I really wish you guys would starting thinking before you throw out mindless insults.

Huh? Isn't that a direct contradiction in terms  ? I mean, if it is sometimes right not to follow the popular thing, doesn't that imply that the popular thing is wrong?

Sometimes it is. The popular vote could want to reinstate slavery or kill all the Arabs. Don't you think that those things are wrong and the President, the leader of the country should do what's right instances similar, rather than follow popular opinion?

Hell... why have a president? If we can marry people on a TV show by calling in and voting then that is what we should do with policy decisions as well I say.

Screw the fact that the president probably knows more than your pathetic ass does.

I always said Bono should be world leader. Bono is an Irish hero, and all would listen to him. I think Bono should slap Robert Mugabe. And then slap Thado Mbeki. Its a crying shame Africa is run by tossers. Bono can save Africa first, and then the world.

I think he would make an awesome super hero, laying waste to evil leaders and spreading food, the cure for AIDS, and goodwill all over the world.

He'd be like Super Grover ... but with shades and a good singing voice.

That's not true at all.

To steal a little something from Socrates, the good and the pleasurable are not the same. The pleasurable (or in this case, the popular decision) might be nice to have or good in the short term, but that doesn't mean it will be beneficial. In fact, it could be the worst thing to do. It's up to Bush to decide what the good thing to do is - the thing we need rather than the thing we want.

They're elected for their ideas, which do not coincide with those of every other American.
