Guest Special K Report post Posted February 24, 2003 So apparently James 'Cyclops' Marsden is set to play Jesse Custer in the new Preacher movie. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, since I've only seen him in X-men, and I think Cyclops was supposed to be really vanilla in that movie, but he's definitely not who I invision. Plus, in a 2-hour time frame, I have an inkling they'll just boil down preacher to blood, guts and sexual deviancy. We shall se.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted February 24, 2003 Preacher was one of the last few comics I got into...sadly I stopped reading around the place of the 3rd or 4th trade paperback. Good shit though.
Guest raptor Report post Posted February 24, 2003 Marsedn should be good, IMO. He made me like Cyclops... and I ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY hate Cyclops.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted February 24, 2003 A preacher movie? How the fuck did this happen?!? I love Preacher, I've read all 9(?) TPB's, and I read the Punisher one too by the same guys. Fucking excellent. But a movie? Brrrrrrrr.
Guest Vyce Report post Posted February 25, 2003 Oh this could just go horribly. But I suppose he's better than the first choice to play Jesse: Ben Affleck.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted February 25, 2003 They should have got O'Haire to play Jesse.
Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted February 25, 2003 They should have got O'Haire to play Jesse. That's actually a great idea. Seriously.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted February 25, 2003 I was serious. O'Haire would kick ass. Plus he's big and scary, which is pretty much essential to the part. Tulip: Naomi Watts w/ terrible fake southern accent Cassidy: Colin Farrell (duh) Starr: Malkovich I am Casting Jesus.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 when they announced Affleck that inspired many laughs I like Affleck but man that is not a good match i hink Jason Patric might be the best "name actor" for Jesse and then maybe Kiefer Sutherland for Cassidy but i have the perfect Starr for you: JK Simmons of OZ/Spider Man fame
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted February 26, 2003 Kiefer would actually be good, now that I think of it. And I've only seen Oz a couple times, but if you mean the big creepy lead Nazi, that could work too. But to me Starr is actually the funniest guy in the whole story, so it has to be someone who can be weird.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 heres another: Crispin Glover as Arseface
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I have my doubts about the prospect this movie but I'll refrain from making a judgement call until we get to see who the rest of the cast are for sure.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted February 26, 2003 when they announced Affleck that inspired many laughs I like Affleck but man that is not a good match wait, I though that was a joke. They seriously had Affuck pegged as Jesse Custer?
Guest cynicalprofit Report post Posted February 27, 2003 They can not do Preacher justice in a 2 hour movie, a trilogy is a must. You cant have him explain why he wants to kill God and do it in a 2 hour time frame, and cover enough bases to have it make any sense. Even if you cut out everything but the Voice, Jesse, and God, theres still way to much to explain. They should just NOT make the movie. I really dont think they can do the book justice. Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 27, 2003 "wait, I though that was a joke. They seriously had Affuck pegged as Jesse Custer? " oh yes Affleck and Cameron Diaz as Tulip !!!!!!! when they first optioned it they were attached heres a question for Preacher fans: what storyarc do you do if you could pick?
Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted February 27, 2003 what storyarc do you do if you could pick? Obviously they'll handle the orgin storyline, but I'd like to see the whole France storyline where they have to rescue Cassidy. It has everything in it. And Affleck was being considered for Custer, but he dropped out because he had just done Dogma, and didn't want to do another religious themed movie.
Guest Vyce Report post Posted February 28, 2003 You know, maybe it's because I watched American Psycho and Singleton's Shaft in two consecutive weekends, but I'm actually thinking that Christian Bale would make a pretty decent Jesse, if he could pull off a tough-ass demeanor and a southern accent. Hmm. Come to think of it, and this is crazy talk I know, but thinking of another Christian Bale movie, I have to say that Matthew McCounahey (however you spell his name) wouldn't be a terrible choice for Jesse. He's got the accent, at least, and he'd be less annoying than Affleck. I like Watts for Tulip. And for Cassidy, I go with Robert Carlyle. Malkovich would be a good "name" to play Starr, but I like the J.K. Simmons choice. Some smart casting there.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted February 28, 2003 McConawhatever would be alright too. I just saw....that movie....with him in it....about the thing....Fraility! That was it. Anyway, if he played it like that or like A Time To Kill and not oh, say The Wedding Planner, it could work. As for the story, I doubt they'd make more than one, so they'd have to do a barebones "Jesse hate God, Jesse mad! Smash God!" type of thing. And yes Sass, it would suck. The book where they go to France was actually my favorite one, either that or the first one, (which I thought was a one shot at the time).
Guest Silence Report post Posted February 28, 2003 Forgive my ignorance, but what was the Preacher supposed to be? I've never read the comic book series. Can someone give me the 411. Thanx.
Guest crandamaniac Report post Posted February 28, 2003 I'm really paraphrasing it here, but basically it's the story of a preacher (Jesse Custer) who gets possessed by the offspring of an angel and a demon, called Genesis. Genesis is really powerful, but lacks any will. It was imprisoned by Angels in heaven, but broke out and bonded with JC, killing his church in the process. JC eventually hooked up with Cassidy, an Irish vampire who's been alive since the turn of the century, and Tulip, JC's ex-girlfriend turned hitman. JC then finds out that GOD has abandoned his throne, so he heads out to find GOD and make him "do his job". Along the way he has many adventures, including running across Allfather Starr and The Grail, who's soul purpose is to guard the bloodline of Jesus Christ Seriously man, I can't really do the series justice, I'd really suggest picking up the TPB's, especially the 3rd volume. Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted February 28, 2003 there will be so many protests to this movie it'll make Dogma look like Shrek by comparison...to...number of protests...

Thanx Crandamaniac. It sounds like the author new just enough of Christianity to get around and then took a few bong hits and started writing. I like the reference to Calvinism in the ex-girlfriend, Tulip. Just in case you didn't know that is a theological acrosstic teaching, it stands for: T total depravity U unconditional election L limited atonement I irresistable grace P perseverance of the saints. The theology sounds horrible, but the story sounds intresting. I just might check it out.

That's a good way of putting it, but pretty accurate. and Ravenbomb, if they do any of the stuff they did in comics (like what happened to Sherrif Root, or the Final Descendant of Jesus Christ, etc.) then every mother from here to Timbuktu will be calling for Garth Ennis's head. Guest converge241 Report post Posted February 28, 2003 "Obviously they'll handle the orgin storyline" i dont think thats so obvious, movies dont always do that in adapting comics..they could give you some background and then jump into a different arc
Guest raptor Report post Posted February 28, 2003 Malkovich would be a perfect match, and I mark for Christian Bale. BALE FOR BATMAN! Tulip is kind of difficult, I think. Eliza Dushku might be good, but then I'd cast her in every movie ever, so I might be biased. Farrell as Cassidy is, of course, a no-brainer.
Guest the 1inch punch Report post Posted March 4, 2003 The Third TPB, Proud Americans, is probably the best, just to echo everyone's sentitments As an Irishman, I will be thouroghly pissed if Colin Farrell isnt Cassidy

Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted March 10, 2003 And a year ago no one else did. And 2 years ago no one would've considered him cause no one heard of him. A guy reciently hits big and now you're going to be pissed if he doesn't get the part? In a year some other Irish guy who might be twice as good could come along.
