NEW YORK, Feb. 25 —  Beverage rivals Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. unveiled plans for new drinks Tuesday, in separate bids to grow their share of the all-important U.S. soft drink market.

INDUSTRY LEADER COCA-COLA, which has had recent success with its line extension Vanilla Coke, said it will launch Sprite Remix, a new “tropical” version of its lemon-lime soft drink Sprite.

PepsiCo said it will launch Mountain Dew LiveWire, a new orange-flavored Mountain Dew, to be available across the United States only through the summer.

Starting in the late spring, Sprite Remix will initially be sold in 20-ounce bottles, with additional package sizes available later in the spring and summer, Atlanta-based Coca-Cola said.

Purchase, New York-based PepsiCo said Mountain Dew LiveWire will initially be available in 20-ounce plastic bottles, with plans to expand into two-liter plastic bottles and 12-packs of 12-ounce aluminum cans.

Mountain Dew LiveWire will be broadly targeted to teens and young adults. PepsiCo said the new drink will be supported with a three-month marketing plan, including TV, radio, online, outdoor and point-of-sale advertising.

Containing the same base ingredients and caffeine levels as original Mountain Dew, LiveWire is Mountain Dew’s third line extension since the introduction of Diet Mountain Dew in 1988. Mountain Dew Code Red debuted in May 2001, with Diet Mountain Dew Code Red following in May 2002.

PepsiCo is rolling out other new products ranging from new flavors of Propel fitness water to natural versions of its Frito-Lay snacks.

Many people familiar with the company had speculated that it would introduce another Mountain Dew extension sometime soon. Mountain Dew Code Red has been a hit, but more recently, berry-flavored Pepsi Blue has not met expectations.

The Orange Mt. Dew doesn't sound too bad (I like Code Red), but lately I've only been drinking Diet Vanilla Coke. I was sort of ok with the Regular Vanilla Coke, but the Diet Version is just awesome. I still can't stand regular Diet Coke or the Diet Coke with Lemon. As for the Sprite stuff, Im not too big on the lemon lime sodas, although I did try the new dnL (Upside Down 7up) and aside from being a little limey and caffinated (a bit like regular Mt. Dew I suppose) I didn't really like it, so I probably won't like the new Sprite Remix.

Orange Flavored Dew? Shit...That'll be a smash hit like Code Red. Sprite Remix? iSn't that an total rip off of DNL? Which one of my 5 sodas on rotation along with Code Red, Pepsi, Cherry Coke and A&W Root Beer.

Yeah, no shit.

Probably because the stuff tastes like fucking mouthwash.

Orange Flavoured Mountain Dew sounds like a good idea to me. I have drank orange with lemon and lime added before and it was quite tasty. I just wish they come out with an idea combining root beer and Mountain Dew Code Red, which has to be one of the best soda combinations I have ever had.

If Orange Mountain Dew is ANYTHING like MD Code Red.... I'm so there.

At the place I work at we had to send back about 400 20 oz. bottles of Pepsi Blue because in the 3 months we stocked it we sold (get this):

4 BOTTLES!

I haven't tried it, but I suppose it isn't that good.

I am thinking Tropical will be some sort of Hawaiian Punch Style Sprite...

Pepsi Blue isn't half bad, but it looks like windex.

Mountain Dew Code Red is the only one of the new generation of sodas I can stand, so I'll probably like LiveWire. Vanilla Coke is nasty, and dn-L & Pepsi Blue are just generically sweet. They don't even taste like anything in particular (to me).

I wonder how LiveWire'll be any different from Minute Maid & Sunkist.

Pretty different...Sunkist or Minute Maid doesn't have the Mt. Dew fourmula does it?

Eh, its not THAT bad.

Diet Twist Sodas however taste like Carbonated Rotting Corpses.

I like Pepsi Blue. It's not my favorite or anything, but I don't think it's as bad as everyone says it is. It just takes more than a few drinks to get used to it. And to that point, the only way to drink it is after it's been sitting in your freezer for a while, not slightly chilled like most stores sell it.

Orange Dew: I'm there.

I don't really mind Pepsi Blue every now and then, but it is not the type od soda I would drink with any regularly.

Maybe that's because it IS Winex.

meh. The only reason I'd drink Pepsi Blue would be out of a REALLY clean windex bottle to freak people out, and I've got blue kool-aide for that

Is all this stuff out now?

We didn't get Red Dew in Florida until mid-summer of last year, so I wonder if this Orange Dew is out yet.

If LiveWire has Michael Cole on the bottle, I'll buy it.

The new sodas will be in 20 oz bottles starting late spring (Remix) and Summer (Livewire)

We have a Pepsi Bottling plant in town here so I would assume that I'll be able to get the Livewire pretty soon after it hits the market.
