Guest Cavi Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 HOLLYWOOD, California (Variety) -- Sarah Michelle Gellar's done with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The actress has confirmed to producer Joss Whedon something most industry insiders have assumed for months -- namely, that this season will be her last with the UPN series, according to people connected to the show. Her departure also likely means "Buffy," at least in its current incarnation, will wrap in May, something that's also not much of a shocker, given the show's apocalyptic storylines this season. Still to be decided: whether the producers and UPN will proceed with a new "Buffy" spinoff, or whether the franchise will simply end. WB Entertainment president Jordan Levin said Tuesday he's hopeful but not certain that "Angel," a "Buffy" spinoff launched in 1999, will be back next fall. **** Zap2it notes that EW has the exclusive on SMG's departure for a forthcoming issue. And speaking of EW, I would like to send them a big "FUCK YOU!" for posting a *HUGE SPOILER* at the end of this article about today's Whedonverse news. TVGuide also posted the news, in addition to the aforementioned spoiler, here. I can't say that I'm upset about Sarah leaving. As I mentioned in the earlier thread about Eliza, I don't want a Season Eight, nor do I really want a spinoff. End it on a high note, like Sarah herself said last summer.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Not a shocker...pretty much everyone knew she wouldn't sign another contract. Although Buffy would be a safe paycheck for another yet, cause outside of Scooby Doo she hasn't proven to be all that bankable. Part of me is sad, and part is glad...Buffy's my favorite show of all time, and I hate to see it go...but I'd hate more for it to stick around to the point where it's just bad. This has been a great season and looks like a good way to end it. Plus the cast is getting too old to play their parts, the scoobies (non demon) are suppose to be in their early 20s, like 21 or 22ish: Sarah Michelle Gellar: 26 in April Alyson Hannigan: 29 in March Nicholas Brendon: 33 in April Emma Caulfield: 30 in April James Masters: 41 in August! I shit you not. So all in all, it's for the best.
Guest Cavi Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 James Masters: 41 in August! I shit you not. Heh, that reminds me of the Marsters' real age debates which have been going on for years. There have been quite a few conflicting reports on said age. I know IMDB (not exactly the most reliable of sites...*remembers when they had Finkel listed as Steph's spouse*) has him listed as being 40 or whatever, yet I have seen other sources say he is more in the 34-35 years of age range. I don't think James, himself, has ever said exactly how old he is.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 I've heard from a few people that the 41 deal is legit. You'd think someone would be able to dig up something on the guy.
Guest Sassquatch Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Right now her movie resume looks fine but she always had Buffy to fall back on if things didn't go well for her in the movies. Gellar will be under a microscope after she leaves Buffy and it will be interesting to see where her career goes. Best of luck to her.
Guest TonyJaymzReloaded Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 you know what really scares me? The part about this being Angel's last season...i hope to god that isnt true.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Allyson Hannigan is 29?? Sheesh, she was WAY too old to be playing a teenager in the America Pie movies... then again, I wonder how many "teens" in that movie were actually teenagers.
LaParkaYourCar Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Allyson Hannigan is 29?? Sheesh, she was WAY too old to be playing a teenager in the America Pie movies... then again, I wonder how many "teens" in that movie were actually teenagers. Don't get me wrong, but I thought she was older. She's starting to show it in the face. But she's still hot so I don't mind it.
Guest Kingpk Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 And Anthony Stewart Head will be 50 next year. If Marsters is in his 40's, he doesn't look it at all.
Guest raptor Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 I can't say I didn't see this coming... but with Angel maybe being cancelled and no Faith The Vampire Slayer, I'm mighty pissed.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 I will kill her for this! Damn it. What will I do now???????? WELL????? WHAT!!!!!
Guest Mad Dog Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Why would they cancel Angel just b/c Buffy is ending? Can they even wrap Angel up this season?
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Maybe the apocalypse will happen. Thus rendering Angel's show unable to continue!
Guest El Satanico Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Yeah Angel is running an Apocalypse story as well.
Guest areacode212 Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Scans of the EW article: http://www.smgboard.com/iboard/index.php?a...t=ST&f=1&t=4493
Guest Cavi Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Thanks for the link, areacode. Great to see Sarah back on a cover (nice pics as well, unlike her Rolling Stone shoot years ago, which I thought was pretty bad). Good interview, as subjects like her relationship with Joss have never been brought up much. And it's refreshing to see that she admits to her bad moves in regards to movies. One thing I don't exactly like is the whole "Buffy Quits" bit on the cover. Eye catching, yes, but it's not like she is "quitting" in a sense. More like the show is coming to its own end.
Guest red_file Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I'm rather burnt out on Buffy as is (really, really thinking it would've been best to end after season five, though there were a smattering of nice episodes in season six), so I'm kinda glad about this. With the exception of Cruel Intentions, I've never actually been all that impressed with SMG, so if she disappears after this I won't really be all that bothered. I'm more worried about Mr. Whedon. Firefly got cancelled; Buffy seems to be going that way; Angel doesn't seem like it'll last that much longer; the Faith spin-off doesn't seem like it's a go. I'm sure he'll bounce back with something, but I really like the stories he has to tell, and am worried that I might have to go a year without any.
