Guest notJames Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I don't have it, nor do I have the exact figures for pricing and whatnot, but from all the people I know who have it (or a similar digital service), they all agree that it's the bomb-diggity. Supposedly, you can pay a flat fee for eternal use of the digital receiver/recorder (around $300 I think), or the service is about $10 bucks a month. The price for the box goes up depending on how much memory you want to buy. I'm sure it has its bugs and quirks, like being either too specific or too random in basing its recordings on what you tell it, but all in all, everyone says it's changed the way they watch TV. I personally don't think I'm ever going to get it, simply because I fear that it's just another way for Big Brother to get a hold of my personal life. But that's just me. Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I want it. I'm intrigued at the fact that I can watch The Simpsons for 4 days straight, if I want to. But, Time Warner cable has me under their spell.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted February 26, 2003 If you've got the cash, TiVo is fantastic. First of all, you record stuff onto a hard disk, so it's a direct feed--the quality is a lot better than you get on a videotape. Secondly, it's infinite convenience. If you want to tape half a dozen shows every week, you can, with the push of just one little button, set the TiVo to tape them every time they're on. It's got an interactive TV listing that always has one week ahead, so you can set up anything you want for a one-shot taping. It always keeps a 30-minute memory of the source of whatever you're watching, so if you get a phone call while you're in the middle of, say, 24, you can actually pause, and then sit down when you're done with your phone call and pick up again. There's a 30-second skip button that lets you just pump your way straight through a whole block of commercials in about 4 seconds. There are usually a few ways to do payment, depending on what brand you get. I think the actual TiVo player/service is a one-shot payment that keeps you good for a year or something. As for finding programs you like...if you tune into something you like, you can press a button that basically tells the machine "I like this" or "I don't like this." So if you're watching, for example, CSI, and you press the "like this" button, it'll find syndicated repeats of CSI, probably CSI: Miami, and other crime-related shows. I'm not sure how it works, but it seems to be by genre and viewing patterns. All in all, it's pretty damn sweet. TiVo is mostly just a convenience, but it's a really cool one. Guest Lethargic Report post Posted February 26, 2003 I started watching Married with Children again. So I set up my DirecTV box to automatically turn to every showing of Married with Children and my VCR is set to record it everytime it comes on. I never have to do anything from now on. It basically works just like a Tivo. So that got me to thinking, maybe having a Tivo wouldn't be that terrible. So I checked Circuit City's site about them. 400 dolllars for the unit PLUS a monthly fee. That woke me up from my moment of utter stupidity. Why am I going to pay such an ungodly amount of money to do something that I'm already doing right now for free?

I think the actual TiVo player/service is a one-shot payment that keeps you good for a year or something. For the actual Tivo service you can either pay $12 monthly or you can pay a one time price for lifetime service. I believe the lifetime service price is now $299.99. If you know that you're going to keep it for at least two year then you should use this option. $300 is about two years worth of service when paying monthly. Tivo isn't cheap by any means. I believe the total i paid for the unit and lifetime service was $700. Thank you Best Buy's "no interest for 12 months".

Guest MrRant Report post Posted February 27, 2003 If you get DirectTV get the one with the Tivo built in and you only pay $5 a month for the service or its free if you subscribe to the Total Choice package. I recommend you visit Tivo Community and look around.
