Guest JMA Report post Posted February 27, 2003 Oil prices jump near $40 a barrel Dwindling U.S. stockpiles pushes crude to 12-year high NEW YORK, Feb 27 — U.S. oil prices spurted to 12-year highs just short of $40 a barrel Thursday as a severe bout of winter weather drained fuel stocks, leaving U.S. energy consumers dangerously exposed ahead of possible war in Iraq. Guest EricMM Report post Posted February 27, 2003 So where does this put us? If this trend continues, which plan of action do you think this govt will put in place? More exploration and more refineries on the domestic side to increase domestic production? A greater govt pushed move for efficency similar to the MD laws during a drought about watering lawn, which would force people to insulate their homes, change their air filters, and buy efficent light bulbs Those are the only two avenues I can see the next year containing. If/when we own Iraq, of course, we will have one of the largest sources of oil at our beck and call, so I don't think the efficency movement will go anywhere then. cawthon777 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2003 I went to high school in Alaska. The state sells so much oil to companies like BP that each resident gets an annual check for approx. $1200 (and it gets higher every year). It's called the Permanent Fund. As long as you are a resident for a full calendar year, you get a check - regardless of age. There are a lot of untapped resources in America that the Dems are afraid to let us use for fear of polluting the environment. From a federal use standpoint, Alaska is one such resource. Guest EricMM Report post Posted February 27, 2003 so then Cawthon I'm to assume that you're in favor of further domesetic oil exploration? Don't you think that negative, lingering, and expensive to fix problems with our environment is a relevant issue?
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted February 27, 2003 I think they forgot to mention that the Venezuelians (sp?) are on strike and holding theit oil business hostage. We have at least a year's worth of oil in storage, the problem is Venezuela. Venezuela has a thicker form of oil, whereas Middle Eastern oil is more fluid, so the procesing plants that are built to do Venezuelian oil can't just switch over to Middle Eastern or other more naturally refined oil. There you go. Don't blame us, blame the Venezuelians. What we really need to do to help prevent this shit from happening is to start tapping our own oil supplies and using them instead of having to rely as much on foriegn goods. Tapping our own oil (Alaska, off shore drilling in Cali, Georgia, Gulf of Mexico, etc...) will not only keep teh price down, reduce our reliance on foriegn oil, it will also create thousands of much needed jobs and helo stimulate our economy. It takes years just to get the oil tapped before it can even be refined, so those jobs will be long lasting and many permanent as well.
Guest Brian Report post Posted February 27, 2003 We could always just stop exporting domestic oil out of Alaska.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted February 27, 2003 That would help too. I don't really understand why we export our own oil and buy other it from other countries. I also have a feeling that Canada has way more oil than they're letting on NAFTA would help get us a better deal from them.

Don't you think that negative, lingering, and expensive to fix problems with our environment is a relevant issue? Sure it's a relevant issue. Do I think we can protect the environment and further our oil exploration? Yes. Alaska has about zero noticable pollution problems and yet look at all the oil that is pumped out of there. Guest Some Guy Report post Posted February 28, 2003 I've read that there are more Cariboo (sp?) up there now than before the pipeline. The pipeline keeps them from freezing.
