Rob E Dangerously Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Cash covered "Hurt", and it sounds pretty good. The Video for it is also very good, showing him playing and old clips. He does change the "crown" part to "crown of thorns". Anybody else hear the song or see the video yet?
Guest El Satanico Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 He does change the "crown" part to "crown of thorns". Actually Rick Rubin edited the "Crown of Shit" lyric before he sent the lyrics to Johnny Cash. He said Cash wouldn't have agreed to the song if that line was in it. I've heard the song and it's pretty good.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Saw the video about a month ago, pretty cool actually...although Cash looked like he'd been dead a month.
Guest raptor Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 The song kicks ass (as much as Johnny Cash can). They have it up on MP3.com, and I suggest everyone give it a listen.
Guest El Satanico Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 The song kicks ass as much as Johnny Cash can Hey damnit...Johnny Cash rules...you shall not insult the man in black
Guest Big Poppa Popick Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 its a damn cool song and video
Guest T®ITEC Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 This song was first exposure to Johnny Cash, and now my interest is growing. Damn fine song.
Guest Michael Joel Benoit Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Excellent song but a sad video.
Guest evenflowDDT Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I've never seen the video, but my roommate owns the CD and his cover of "Personal Jesus" is much better (I considered buying the CD myself purely for that song). I'd heard much about the cover of "Hurt" but its strangely unaffecting to me, but his delivery of "Personal Jesus" gives me chills.
Guest SP-1 Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 "Hurt" is quite the awesome cover. I've known about it for a little while now. The video is chilling, but I also see where he's going with it, I think. I am pleased.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Johnny Cash does rule. I didn't think Johnny was doing very well.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I enjoy it quite a bit. It's a real simple song, though, that's fairly easy to understand, so I'm pretty surprised no one else has done it. Excellent, excellent cover.
Guest saturnmark4life Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 It really works, saw it the other day. He did look like he'd been dead a month or so however.
Guest Madmartigan21 Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 What's the name of the albumn that this, and the other covers that have recently been discussed, are on?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 The Man Comes Around The NIN original was from The Downward Spiral.
Guest swan Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 This song was first exposure to Johnny Cash, and now my interest is growing. Damn fine song. Shame on you. He has been working w/ Rick Rubin for nearly a decade and has done many odd covers. He has a ggod concert on the Austin City Limits show on PBS. Pick up a greatest hits CD. You can get one at Best Buy for unbder $10.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I put up a thread about the new video when it debuted. Very strong and haunting. The Man Comes Around is a fantastic album overall, much better than his last American Recordings III which felt a little flat. American Recording I and II are exceptional and filled with unique covers and off beat traditional tunes.
Guest nl5xsk1 Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 The song kicks ass as much as Johnny Cash can Hey damnit...Johnny Cash rules...you shall not insult the man in black Well said, Satanico. The guy has been a legend forever, and has been kicking ass since before it was the "cool" thing. I hope he lives forever just to shut the critics up.
Guest El Satanico Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Since Rick Rubin is the producer I wonder if he could talk Johnny into covering songs from his old label mates Run DMC, Beastie Boys or Slayer?
Guest converge241 Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I think its one of the worser Cash modern cover songs as he's done a few I like his Tom Petty/ I wont back down the best
Guest swan Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Since Rick Rubin is the producer I wonder if he could talk Johnny into covering songs from his old label mates Run DMC, Beastie Boys or Slayer? If you go here: http://covers.wiw.org/artist.php/119 you can see all the songs he has covered. Danzig anybody?
Guest El Satanico Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Yeah I knew he covered Danzig. That's probably stranger than him covering NIN.
Guest raptor Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 5{tanico,Feb 27 2003, 11:40 PM]The song kicks ass as much as Johnny Cash can Hey damnit...Johnny Cash rules...you shall not insult the man in black Well said, Satanico. The guy has been a legend forever, and has been kicking ass since before it was the "cool" thing. I hope he lives forever just to shut the critics up. I think what I said got misinterpreted. I love Johhny Cash too, but just never saw him as a "kick-ass" musician. His personality is badass, but the tempo of his songs doesn't have that affect on me. When I think "kick-ass" I think of a very driving type of song, not one in which the tempo is very down-key, like much of Cash's stuff. Hope that cleared things up.
Guest swan Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I think its one of the worser Cash modern cover songs as he's done a few I like his Tom Petty/ I wont back down the best Oh that was a good cover too.The "hurt" cover is a strong one not only because of the music but the video is very powerful as well. Shows you that when done right a music video can be moving.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Oddly, Converge, I think I Won't Back Down is by far his worst. It's very bland and lifeless, I don't think Cash could really get into it. His cover of Southern Accents is really sharp and dead on though.
Guest Madmartigan21 Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 Is there a possible reason, other than my computer being screwed up, that the video for Hurt at MTV.com is only about twenty seconds long?
