KKK looking to demonstrate at Augusta

Wonder if Tiger Woods will have a comment now.....

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The leader of a Ku Klux Klan splinter group said Friday he will demonstrate in support of Augusta National Golf Club's all-male membership during the Masters, whether the club likes it or not.

"This equal rights stuff has gotten out of hand," said Joseph J. Harper of Cordele, imperial wizard of the American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. "We're not concerned with whether they want us there or not. We're concerned with their right to choose who they want to choose" as members.

Harper wrote the Richmond County Sheriff's Department on Thursday, requesting a permit to protest during the Masters in April.

Augusta National, a private club that hosts the Masters each year, issued a statement disavowing any group that seeks to use the tournament as a political soapbox.

"Anyone who knows anything about Augusta National Golf Club or its members knows this is not something that the club would welcome or encourage," said club spokesman Glenn Greenspan.

Martha Burk, the lead advocate in pressing Augusta National to admit women members, said the club and the Klan deserve one another.

"It is not a surprise that the KKK supports Augusta National Golf Club, since the club embraces and flaunts discrimination," said Burk, chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. "It must expect support of a like-minded group."

Told about the KKK's plans, Tiger Woods shook his head.

"If it's not one thing, it's another," he said.

Some say Harper's Klan group is nothing but a one-man show.

Harper says he formed his own Klan offshoot after a falling out with national Klan organizers in January. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, says Harper appears to be the only member.

"He's the only member we're aware of," said Joe Roy, intelligence director for the law center. "He's a very small fish in a big sea of hatred."

Harper declined to discuss how many members his group has, though his request to the sheriff for a protest application said he plans to bring up to 25 people for the Masters.

But Harper said people expecting his Klansmen to wear white hoods and robes have the wrong idea.

"We'll probably be in either blue jeans or suits," Harper said. "We're tired of poor white trash calling themselves the Ku Klux Klan and the negative image the Ku Klux Klan is getting."

Col. Gary Powell of the Augusta-Richmond County Sheriff's Department said five groups have requested demonstration permits for Masters week, beginning April 7. They include the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. Burk said her group plans to seek its permit application soon.

No permits will be given to any group. Augusta has a strict policy on the matter.

This not what Augusta needed.

Why do they feel obligated to BUTT in? I'm sure the people at Augusta are going with "no no, we'll take it from here." Cause I'm REALLY sure they want backing from the klan.

Why did the KKK have to go and ruin a perfectly good title like 'imperial wizard'.

Seriously, if it weren't for the KKK that would be the coolest title to have.

A bit off-topic, but under Johnny's beloved Patriot Act, wouldn't the KKK be considered a terrorist organisation?

Contributed to this board from all frustrated men around the world...

EDIT:Comparing a members-only GOLF club to a white supremacist group like the Ku Klux Klan...not only is it an insult to the entire sports community, but it is a testament as to how much of an idiot Burke really is.

Man, talking about giving those stupid women's rights groups more ammo.

Gotta love rednecks though...

Anyone else thinking back to the Dave Chapelle "Blind-Black-White-Supremacist" skit? That's all I think about when I think of the Klan now...it's funnier this way.

I think we should just give the clan a small island where they can govern themselves and live in their perfect little world.

Augusta is absolutely right in admitting only who they want to admit. As a private club, that's their choice. I'm sure support from the Klan is the last thing they wanted, though.

Imperial Wizard WOULD be a dashed cool title to have, though, if weren't for the Klan.

Did the first Imperial Wizard know any magic?

Isn't it only going to be one guy?

And that Chappelle skit was funny as hell.

Question.

Aren't there women's only country clubs?

Then what the hell business is it of them what Augusta does?

It's a private club. That means not public. Which means they can put anybody in they damn well feel like. If they decide to only let in people who think their stuffed chihuahua is real, they're welcome to do just that.

I'm sure they feel like Title XI should be in place here too. Problem is that this course has strict rules and long running tradition. I'm all for women being as equals as men, however as long as it doesn't fuck with something like this. Before you know it this will turn into one big riot. If you have Jackson's Rainbow Coalition and the Klan all together things could very easily get out of hand if something goes horribly bad. Now to make this complete you would need the Black Panthers there saying something isn't right and this would quickley turn into anything but a Golf Tournement. Watch them beef up security and have a S.W.A.T. team there just in case....regardless if there are protestors there or not. A simple no will obviously not stop them.

all we need is another racial party like Black Panthers, and we can live in the 'Nam days again...

seriously...you have to be a moron to argue with this case...

If I'm not mistaken, no one has filed a lawsuit. No one is asking the government to force this country club to admit women. The complainers are merely excercising their first amendment rights of speech and assembly by drawing attention to a practice they find bigoted. You can argue the merits of that point of view, but the argument of whether or not Augusta should have a male only policy should not be couched in terms of the constitutional/legal issues the Supreme Court would consider if it were faced with the issue.
