Just curious with no MMA background knowledge what type of upset is that? Is it mild or more along the lines of Angles winning the WS type upset?

Pretty damn big. This was only Sylvia's second UFC fight and Ricco had not lost a single fight since 1999. It's hard to compare it to baseball but I think this is on the level of Vernon Forrest beating Shane Mosley the first time.

TIm Sylvia TKO's Ricco ROdriguez in the 1st. Riccco got treated like a ragdoll (which is saying something), and actually had a very tight armbar seemingly secured. But Tim escaped, and countered a low kick with right cross, and followed up with some big punches on the prone Ricco for the stoppage.

 

Big props to the very big (& VERY strong) TIm Sylvia.

The MMA world passed Tank by A LONG time ago. I mean, jeez, Belfort and Smith destroyed him and that was about 25 UFC's ago.

eh.. whatever.. he got quickly tapped by Frank Mir, which Mir has now done to THREE of his six career opponents. I'm under no illusions that Tank can be an elite fighter at this point in his career, but still, for anybody who hasn't fought for years, Frank Mir is an extremely tough comeback fight. In terms of raw talent, he may be the top heavyweight in the UFC.

 

If you think Tank's washed up, probably right, but he was put into an almost impossible situation.

Was Tank ever anything to begin with? His record is right around .500, and his record against good fighters is much worse. Tank's best days were when UFC was just a bloodsport with few rules, he doesn't stand a chance against the guys now.

He is not a championship-caliber fighter. Take him for what he is, an exciting, charismatic guy who can deliver a devastating knockout. There is still a place for him in UFC. Frankly a lot of the current top fighters utliize boring styles.

He had a match in 6 where he just killed a guy with 2 punches. And I've seen the Ultimate Ultimate 2 match.

 

Tank's record was only 50/50 back then...and now the skill level is way higher. His only draw is that he's a Tyson like freak and he'll be the bad guy.

My respect for Tank has gone way up since he approached this fight unlike he usually does. He was at the octagon five hours early, practicing punches and escaping the triangle for at least a half hour. He weighed in at 240 and looked very cut, at least compared to his other fights. He kept the trash talking to a minimum and was very respectful to Mir at the press conference. It just goes to show that MMA has gone through an evolution where you can't expect to go in there and punch someone in the face for a victory. The toehold is a very easy submission to escape, showing how his style is nowhere near geared to countering submission. Nonetheless, Tank definately has more respect from me.

Tank's fights are usually the most exciting on a UFC card, but his chances of winning fights now goes down because as exciting as he is, he is one dimensional. He slugs it out and hopes to hit your silly button before he gets taken down or tires out because he is usually not in shape to go past 7+ minutes. Tank's fights still command attention because usually his fights end early, it's just who's hand gets raised in the end is the question.
